I just turned 50 and I have an excuse to buy one. Should I get a DE or a .500 JRH revolver? I have no practical need for either. Just want one.
talk me into/out of a Desert Eagle .50AE

In the last 2 years .50 AE has been some of the most consistently available ammo...

I really like the DE, but a nice .50 JRH would bee cool also. Don't forget the 50GI, I see mostly Glock conversions there but think there are other options. Or, a 50 Beowulf rifle.
That said, I prefer the DE in 44. Just easier to feed. So, if you go that way I would look about a conversion kit for .44 or .357.

Also in the market. I was hoping for a .458 Lott but the .500 nitro makes even less sense so it's a frontrunner LOLWhy not a .500 Nitro double rifle? Time to up your 3 gun game.

Hope you have big hands, I couldn't fully get my medium-sized mitts around the grip. That said, the US-built ones are very well made and surprisingly soft-shooting.

The .50AE desert eagle is a ton of fun and brings a lot of attention at the range if thats your thing. I reload for mine which makes range trips a lot more affordable. With a heavy load of h110 and a 325gr plated bullet its a handfuls. I have small hands and still shoot it comfortably.. if you like huge fireballs and lots of noise, its just the ticket.

Turning 50, get a 50. As good an excuse as any. For the JRH, are there any revolvers other than the BFR? Just curious, the BFR is really good looking.

They are fun. Mostly novelty, but if you want to hunt with a handgun, they have the power and accuracy.
I sold my Mk XIX .50 years ago to pay my mortgage during the recession, but a couple years ago I scored a great deal on a Mk VII .44 mag. I just need to find a 10" Mk VII barrel to chop and thread for a suppressor.

.50 caliber black powder pistols are fun, but the choice is yours. IMO, there is very little practical use to a .50 cal semi auto pistol or revolver, a magnum .45 of whatever flavor is more than enough for most anything you'll ever see outside of a zoo in your life.
Get the DE, and ... figure out a way to carry it.

Many years ago I had a DE in 357 Mag. Didn’t get the hype and traded it for something else. Last year I got the bug for another DE again and ended up getting one in 50 AE and a 44 Mag conversion bbl. now I get it. Even in that big platform the 50AE is a handful and a lot of fun! I say go for it.

I have L/XL sized hands but I’ve handled the DE before (even shot one round of .50 out of one once) and it’s still pretty chunky. But ergos are secondary when you step into the ridiculous. LOLHope you have big hands, I couldn't fully get my medium-sized mitts around the grip. That said, the US-built ones are very well made and surprisingly soft-shooting.

is the MKVII the new kinder, gentler, lighter design? Is the MKXIX the old full size frame? My brother had one of the early .357s with the smaller frame but sold it off. Obviously I don’t know much about these beasts.

There are custom builders and I believe Freedom Arms originally made them. Not sure if they still do. Plus FA revolvers are generally out of my price range , though pretty as jewels

Can't make your decision for you. It's big, and expensive, (too much so for me) but if you want it, and can afford it... and afford to feed it... there's your answer.
