So the land owner where I hunt, after I reported seeing raccoons making a home near my stand, asked me if I would shoot them because they’ve been bothering the livestock (apparently he’s live trapped and relocated [yes that’s illegal] 12 so far).

I said no problem.

Here’s the rub, I’ve been hunting with my slug gun because my deer rifle is out of commission for a bit yet. I don’t really want to waste a 12ga slug on a raccoon. I also don’t want to carry two rifles into the woods. So I was thinking I have 2 options:
- 1.) bring my 9mm with me and use that
- 2.) start hunting with my sks because that would be “appropriate” for both deer and raccoon.

option 3 is to see if I can find a .243 for sale somewhere but I’d prefer not to spend that money of money at this point.

Of the first two options which would you do?

Edit: to answer a few questions here, The land owner prefers not to do it himself. He dislikes killing that which he won’t eat. I respect that.

I would pop them with a slug provided it doesn't scare my deer off for the rest of the day.

Let him shoot his own darn raccoons. A bowl full of dog food will attract them like flies at night. Just rig a light over the dog food bowl and shoot them with a .22.

Best would be a 22 pistol but are law is funny having rimfire rounds on you when big game hunting.

In many states there are laws that prohibit the carrying of a gun that is not legal for taking deer during the gun deer season. That is the first thing I would check out. Otherwise why could you not have some bird-shot or buckshot along to use instead of slugs? That too would have to be researched as to legality.

I really would be leery of shooting them without carefully looking at the game regs might be copacetic to shoot a nuisance animal on behalf of the property owner but I wouldn't want to have to chat with the game Warden about it.

If you still feel good about it after looking it up I would nip on down to Walmart or tractor supply and grab the dirt cheapest box of shot I could find.

we can't have any shot when deer hunting, no rimfire either.

Coon's are a PITA in the country. My neighbors and I will testify to that. Garbage has to be in containers if not wanted to be scattered all over the yard. Horse feed in cans with double bungee cords. Smokers and grills put inside after use or the coons will chew the cables off.
We take care of them ourselves.

It’s currently hunting season for them and there are no bag limits From October to February 15th.

Wait so if I'm reading this right and you wanted to smack them as a hunt you wouldn't be able to use the shotgun or the pistol anyway? So that kinda makes the argument for the sks

But it’s okay if someone else kills them and doesn’t eat them? What kind of ethics framework is that?
Some people prefer not to kill. Some people prefer to only kill things they’ll eat. Some people have no qualms killing anything on 4 legs for any reason. I don’t tend to question other people’s ethics especially if I’m hunting their land.
