Went to the farm to check cameras and feeders today and saw a deer in the middle of a big pasture. Unfortunately I was on my ATV and in the middle of a herd of cows when I spotted the deer. Now these cows are so used to vehicles that they don't really care if you want them to move. Most of the time I have to drive around them. However, when you get off and start walking they get a little nervous. I tried to pull a sneak on the deer and would have succeeded if the cows had not stampeded. They not only get spooked but they tend to run in front of you while looking over their shoulders. I'll just stay on my Yamaha next time.
 
Better luck next time! The heifer in my avatar photo used to run deer outta her pasture. Apparently there wasn’t enough grass for her to share with those freeloading deer.
 
I carry a bag of feed on the back. The cows move behind me, looking for deed.

I have shot from ATV before.
 
It’s common practice here that if you see a moose on the trail while on your atv, leave the atv running while you glass. Ive personally had them spook as soon as the motor shuts off. But they aren’t concerned at all about the sound of a small 4 stroke motor, they’re almost curious about it. Not sure if deer are the same?

Feed them range cubes from that vehicle and they will come running every time you start it. Throw corn from the same vehicle and the deer will figure that out too. ;)
 
Hear Ya!

Cows are such stupid animals. Makes me so angry when they run down the road in FRONT of my truck rather than veer off. I've had them do this for nearly half a mile before (no kidding).

I remember in the days of early internet reading a hunter claim he'd start a chain saw and leave it idling on a stump to attract deer.

I should have seen that one coming - I've never owned a chain saw that would idle 30 seconds. They would die, then refuse to start for at least 15 minutes. And if that would attract a deer I should have had an acre full every time I cut some old tree down.

Several years ago I was on a spring bear hunt in Manitoba. We were headed out to the stand mid-afternoon when a caribou stepped onto the gravel road. It decided to gallop in front of the truck instead of veering off as expected. It got to a steady 35mph before the guide had to stop. He said they would occasionally keel over from exhaustion if he didn’t come to a complete stop and wait for it to get out of the road.
