100 yards with the SKS

Way back when ammo was dirt cheap, copper washed in crate's .... Every month or so I would burn through a couple hundred rounds just to keep your eye... minute of pie plate with the sks is all i ever expected or got.... For real accuracy i would roll my own for my 788 or something else.... but darn the fun factor was always there.... enjoy...

Looks pretty normal for a Chinese gun with 122-124 gr steel FMJ/HP. I'm a bit surprised the Yugo didn't fair better. I've seen some under 2" groups from those euro SKS with the brass cased ammo from Serbia. If by chance you are using an optic I might suspect the base is shifting a little since it appears to be making clusters.

Nope. Factory irons on a chinese model.

Congrats.... That's a real nice 100 yard group... For an SKS. I have three, (one is a safe queen) and the two that I occasionally shoot with steel case ammo probably couldn't beat that group at 100 yards. Last couple times I had an SKS out it only got shot at 50 yards.... Makes me feel better (grin). And one of them has a bright orange front sight post to help me out, ( I need all the help I can get). Tapco had them on the market a few years back; don't know their status now. IMG_1712.JPG .. Got a pic of a 50 yard group from this past May. That's an 8 inch black bull. Not a bad 50 yard group for an old guy with an SKS; too bad it wasn't centered a little better. IMG_1617.JPG .. But they can still hit human size targets at 100 yards and that was the design goal. Along with being rugged and reliable.

My '57 Romanian SKS will fairly reliably hit 1 pound tannerite containers at 75 yards or so with iron sights if I do my part. Its never had a brass case ran through it. At least not since about '99 or 2000.

I love my SKS. Its rugged, dependable, and fun. And accurate enough for what it does.

I put a Kivaari trigger, a tech-sight, and a thinner front post on mine, but I have never benched it for accuracy, because.....it's just not a gun from which I expect high accuracy. I did it to make it a bit easier to shoot fast and a little bit tighter than stock in the brush. Maybe I should try it, but then....I never tested it BEFORE I did the mods, so I have nothing to compare it to.

One of the best things I ever did for my sks was put an aftermarket front sight post in. The smaller post with a small “ball” on top made for a much better sight picture and improved my shooting drastically with it. It’s a cheap fix too!

I was scrolling down to say the same thing. The only difference is I much prefer the .072 flat top sight. KNS Front Sight AK-47, SKS Standard Post Steel Black Installing the KNS sight made a huge difference in the sight picture and groups size. I shot this 200 yd. group while regulating the new front sight.

I have and I’ve loved enough to know that I’m never going to be content with a 3+ MOA rifle.

They're not necessarily 3 MOA rifles, as you can see above. Your average shooter simply doesn't know how to get the most out of iron sights. For example, and not knocking the OP, but he was shooting at 100 yds. with a coarse, dark front sight at an 8" black target. As such there was no hope at all of a decent sight picture, which is needed to shoot good groups. A smaller front sight with a better target would help him shoot smaller groups.

If you are any good with a gun, you should be able to get a killing shot on an animal with an SKS iron sights from 100yds. Unless you eyes are bad like mine. That the reason I put scopes on just about everything.
That pattern is plenty tight enough to bring down a deer.

The SKS is like most firearms made anywhere in that they can be improved from how they leave the factory. I'm not an SKS owner, but as a long-time fan of the 7.62x39 cartridge I've handled a few in my lifetime. A couple of them were capable of 2 MOA, but it took some work and modification on the part of the owners.

Being able to hit a pie plate with a mediocre performing brand of x39 at 100 yards is a start. There are better ammo choices out there, and they're not necessarily brass case. There's some really good steel case. Golden Tiger made in the Russian Vympel Plant is one of the better performing steel case varieties in my Mini-30. "Wolf" is a trademark of a US importer. Their steel case x39 has been made in different factories over the years to varying degrees of quality. Mostly from Russia, but also Germany. It was at one time made by the Tula Cartridge Plant.

I wish I would have snatched up a Yugo SKS back in the day when they could be had for a song. I've got so much x39 ammo I need more guns chambered for it. When/if things get back to normal I'll likely pick one up. I'd rather have an SKS than an AK/AKM type... unless it's a Finnish Valmet or an early Israeli Galil.

daniel craig:

Are you only into achieving tight groups, when possible?

Or does your shooting club etc allow you to hit plastic juice jugs at 30 or 50 yards.?
These have become my only targets - because they are fun.

Fun is its own reward, with no regrets, literally (- regarding types of sport shooting -), if I were to die tomorrow.

Not bashing you or your rifle, but I just could not get any enjoyment from a rifle that shot like that and I’ll never understand the love people have for com-bloc firearms.
That’s probably because maybe you don’t understand the rifle and what it’s designed to do. Again, i think you misunderstood what those com-bloc have archived with some crude milled/stamp receivers and plywood… we have the SKS, AK, PPS, RPK and many other weapons that i have the upmost respect because they function and have giving the western guns a very good run for their money. Don’t get me wrong, i have a tricked out AR right next to my bed but also have an AK to the left. And i can guarantee you that you will respect, fear or understand the love people have with com-bloc guns the moment you use it to save your life or you are taking fire from one of them….;)
