Cowboy Mounted Shooting Revolvers

My daughter, who recently graduated college, recently bought her own 1st horse. I bought her a horse trailer and put time in to getting some issues addressed with it. She has decided that while she loves hunter jumpers, she wants to do Cowboy Mounted Shooting. She already loved to shoot and fortunately I still had western tack, so she is set as far as horse and equipment for now. She has been to a clinic, a couple of group practices, and even purchased a custom holster that a customer maker had made a mistake on. It was in her size, very small, so the price was very good. We purchased a .22 to make noise with and do training.

Now she needs a pair of .45lc revolvers. What she wants, with custom work performed, costs $3,000.00 new (that's what happens when you barrow from others). Neither of us can afford close to that at this point. We are looking for something used that can at least get her started. As long as the pistols have a 3.5" barrel (she likes that size and that fits her holsters).

A number of years ago Ruger introduced a variant of the New Vaquero called the Montado. The Montado was designed specifically for CAS Mounted shooting. It featured a 3 3/4" barrel, a deeply checkered, low wide hammer spur, and grooves on the front of the backstrap for a firm grip while riding.

I'm pretty sure the Montado is no longer being manufactured, but a pair might be found somewhere on line.

Don't forget, 45 Colt is the ONLY chambering approved for CAS Mounted shooting.

Cowboy action shooters both mounted and afoot trade and sell guns constantly. Go to some matches, try various competitors’s guns. Don’t buy ANYTHING until she decides what she wants. Let the club members know what she is looking for, and there is an excellent chance you can pick up a used serviceable revolver. Get on the SASS Wire Forum and check the classified ads daily.

Thank you for the message. I have been trying to get on the SASS Wire Forum as I saw a pair posted there for sale. Unfortunately, I have had no luck getting any kind of response. I never get the e-mail to confirm my e-mail and have sent multiple message with no responses received.

Buy basic guns and learn the basics first.

No one goes to Ford, buys a Mustang then turns their brand new car over to some custom shop recommended by a new “friend” for improvements on what highly qualified engineers designed into a perfectly good piece of machinery.

I joined SASS in 1997 and left in 2006. Came back to SASS in 2016. It can be a lot of fun but it can get real expensive when everyone else is spending your money for you.

Thanks for your message. We are of the same mind set. That being said, I hate to buy twice or something that I would not like. Something used would seem to be ideal.

My uberti El patron was a pleasant surprise in quality and fit/finish.
. I know uberti makes CMS revolvers with some of the customized parts already on them, like lowered hammer and slick action.
I almost bought one myself...

Check out gunbroker.com and search 'cowboy mounted shooting and 'CMS'

I am a ruger fan and I am sure that a vaquerowould be more durable for the long run....but the uberti will get the job done with style also....

I do not know one end of a horse from the other, so I have never tried Mounted CAS, although many years ago I did get to try it riding in a wagon pulled by a horse. Another cowboy was at the reins. It was great fun.

$3000 sounds kind of high to me.

Maybe if they have been customized a whole lot, but she can use any pair of single action 45 caliber revolvers in Mounted Shooting.

I would suggest looking into a pair of New Vaqueros.

Only SASS members can put a gun up for sale, but I am not aware of any rule against non-members buying guns from the Classified Ads forum. An additional thought: buying a gun to fit a particular holster may not be the ideal way to choose a firearm.
