If you are interested in turning the NRA around…

You are wrong. (See my above reply.) The NRA, at this point, is running on fumes. Its actual influence is next to zero. It does not move votes; it simply confirms them.

yes that makes total sense, anti gunners are obsessed with them and spending millions of dollars to damage them because they are irrelevant. Seems reasonable to me.

Maybe you're right. Maybe the NRA members aren't worthy of representation. Maybe we should cut off the hand that feeds us. Maybe the 2A community would be better off without the NRA training programs, edication programs, lobbying efforts, congressional contacts etc. Maybe the 2A advocates need a vacuum that would be created with the demise of the NRA.
I believe the NRA is the 800 lb. gorilla in the room and every congressional member on capitol hill knows that and recognizes that and all that knowledge and recognition is why we still have our guns today.

I think you are wrong, but maybe I am wrong.
We shall see.

So quit. It won't cost you anything and you are not doing the organization any good with your sour grapes, anyway.
Sour Grapes the leadership bilked the members out of 100s of millions of dollars. Wayne and his wife used your money like it was theirs. The board of directors is a joke and they employed two people who were fired from their previous employment for embezzlement and made one of them CFO. Ackerman McQueen used Wayne's weak personality to help feather their own nest and help hide Wayne and others malfeasance. They should be in jail.

To maximize its power and influence, an interest group (such as the NRA) ideally should be a broker or "kingmaker" between two equally balanced blocs. (An example of this is Sen. Manchin right now.) This is exactly what the NRA used to do, years ago. Back then, it was feared and respected as the most effective lobbying group in Washington. That ended when it threw its lot in completely with the Republican Party. It was no longer an "honest broker." The Republicans could take it for granted, and the Democrats could ignore it. (In fact, a lot of Democratic candidates are using their NRA "F" ratings as a badge of honor. This was unheard of before.)

You may ask why the NRA moved in this direction. I believe it had to do with tribalism and polarization, and the desire of the leadership (WLP & co.) to maximize fundraising and contributions. They could do this more effectively as a component of the conservative "tribe." But at the price of losing their political clout overall.

Actually, the antigunners are raising millions of dollars by using the NRA as a bugaboo. Both the rank-and-file antigunners and the rank-and-file gun owners are deluded in thinking that the NRA is still effective (although from diametrically opposed points of view). There's a lot of cynical exploitation going on, by the string-pullers on both sides.

Love or hate the NRA and Wayne, they are the wall that best blocks the anti 2A movement. I do support the smaller pro 2A outfits but unless they combine to make a huge barrier they will only slow the erosion of our rights. I don't like sending money that supports the current leadership of the NRA but I do think we are still better with them.

AlexanderA and insignificant bill are right.

WLP got control of the NRA BOD by force of personality and by paying about one fourth of the members for various "services".

f you take the time to scroll down there are Topics in bold for every change of info, pick what you want to read that way.

Yes, it's really easy to read.

i've learned that many folks on these boards refuse to read anything related to the NRA flaming dumpster fire. i will continue to provide links, especially in response to tirades and rants attributing the entire NRA mess to the god awful anti-gunners, disgruntled NRA members, communists, liberals and RINOs.

The NY attorney general amended her complaint after WLP lost the federal bankruptcy case.

The worst part of all is the self-centered cynicism of our so-called "leaders" -- WLP and those who support him. I refuse to be played for a fool by those who say that "the NRA is the only game in town." It isn't the only game in town. The sooner the current NRA disappears (because it can't be reformed), the sooner a new grass-roots, truly representative pro-gun organization can be formed. The rational choice is to boycott the NRA completely. Don't contribute, don't vote, have nothing to do with them. WLP, himself, should be in prison.

A lot of it had to do with the influence of Angus McQueen. Wayne is really a Milque-toast.

A lot of it had to do with Angus McQueen he used his influence to control Wayne. Wayne is really a milque-toast. Reminds me of Frank Fitzsimmons who the mob used as a piggy bank.

Thanks for the link...even has a Table of Contents

I don't disagree with you.
However, destroying the organization completely is not the solution. If these people have indeed committed crimes they should be prosecuted for them. As it currently is, it appears that is not good enough for the Attorney General of NY. Her goal appears to be the ultimate punishment of every NRA member through the complete destruction of the NRA and nothing less.

Just because a politician is corrupt it doesn't give LE a license to destroy the entire party.
There are some rotten apples in the NRA, no doubt. It's time for those rotten apples to go, whether voluntarily or through force of criminal prosecution. I am supportive of either.
I wonder if it would be possible for the membership to file a class action lawsuit to force the NRA Board of Directors to clean up the leadership and revise the by-laws and address other known operational deficiencies?

One thing of note in this thread is that Alexander a hates conservatives and the Republican party. Most gun owners hold conservative values. Why don’t you tell us the real reason you never miss a chance to throw shade on us.

It's highly unlikely that the NRA will be dissolved. Recently the NY judge commented on that:

"Justice Joel Cohen of the New York State Supreme Court asked Assistant Attorney General Jonathan Conley about whether dissolution is appropriate rather than "addressing the specific problems." Cohen repeatedly pressed Conley on the issue during arguments over the NRA’s latest effort to dismiss the state’s lawsuit accusing the organization of diverting millions of dollars in charitable funds for the personal benefit of NRA executives and associates."

I hate to say it but the NRA is a lost cause, IMHO. Rarely does anything productive come out of that organization while GOA is pounding the pavement to support the 2A. I completely agree that the NRA was a far better group when they were neutral except for 2A related items. My dad was an old school Dem but ALWAYS donated to the NRA because he believed in gun rights and their ability to support them. The vast majority of his friends and neighbors were the same.

I removed the link because I found it in another post here.

If that's too much effort for you, then nevermind...
I don’t know about the effort, I just don’t understand folks posting books and not really explaining what their point was. I read it and I’ll probably see things I will say “hmmm” about but maybe not what strikes you.

But appreciate your response.

One thing of note in this thread is that Alexander...

...has his own opinions which may totally or partially conform to, or against others. EVERYONE on this thread is right about SOME portion of the WLP debacle...including the NY AG.

Mine? Twofold, WHATEVER happens to the NRA after this, or, if ANOTHER already established 2A organization makes a bid for the NRA's FIVE MILLION MEMBERS, it'll (gasp!) take MONEY. Some ppl here, other threads just lookn' for an excuse, don't want to donate any money, help on a phone bank, shucks, I'd wager a good portion do not even know WHO their Reps & Senators are, little alone have their phone #s.
Secondly, If ANYONE here thinks the NY AG has ''your best 2A interests at heart,'' well, that bridge in Wala La Wala WA is already sold, but you can put in a secondary or even tertiary bid on it...I'll broker the deal for 35% up front...just call me at BR7549...

I believe the NRA will never recover from this, and if they do survive, will be a shadow of their former self.

I personally am done with them for now and don’t expect to support them again. I know there are many folks who are involved in the NRA who are outstanding people, but as with almost every big outfit that goes belly up, it happens from inside and at the top. I now believe WLP to be a puppet and a pawn. He was the face of the organization, but he facilitated the money drain, and he benefited from it. He and his puppet masters need to be tried and, if guilty of all the embezzlement and corruption, then need to go to prison.

I now support GOA and SAF. FPC is also excellent. If you think the NRA is actually making a difference these days, I disagree. They say they are by filing support for 2A lawsuit, but I believe the SAF and FPC are doing the heavy lifting these days.

It’s sad. For some, it’s emotional. But step back and look at the reality…I think it’s ugly and not gonna get any better.

If we lose the NRA there will probably never be anything like it again. I agree it needs some improvement. If we aren't going to help the NRA the least we could do is not hinder it.

Who thinks that?

It will likely take a while for sure. I don’t know anyone who is “hindering” the NRA, but not sure what that even means.

I am personally very sad it is in its current state, but blame the right folks…WLP and his cohorts ought to face the wrath of the “5 million” members they betrayed.
