Magazine, release & spring fell out of gun on firing first shot of the day. Round count around 150/200. Not an ammo problem.
NOTE: When inserting a magazine, it can contact the mag release, at times. Depends on the angle, when inserted. Not sure this contact caused the problem?

To repair- a wedge is placed to hold the spring in the proper position. Then the mag release is inserted from the right side. The tap on the mag release has to go in the channel that limits travel, left & right. When in place, remove the wedge.

I would NOT use a screw driver to force the spring into the correct position. This will bend the spring, making it seem shorter as it flexes to the right. it may the slip out of the notch & fail.

Hope photos make sense? https://www.shoptaurus.com/ full.jpg full.jpg full.jpg full.jpg full.jpg full.jpg

The front of the magazine can hit the magazine release, as mag slides up into locked position. Is this normal? I think no? View attachment 1050330

  • I have had pistols where this happens. I just file/sand them until the inside of the mag catch is flush with the frame. That was more of an instance of the magazine not dropping free though. I dont see how this is ejecting the mag release out of the pistol though. Looks like the recess in the mag catch could be deeper. The spring bending could be a result from that. Once bent it may not hold anymore because the recess is too shallow. Solutions to try would be to deepen the recess OR shorten the spring. Since you have a spare... if it were me... I would try deepen the recess. You need steady hands and diamond tips for a slow speed dremel though. Might want to take some measurements on all your mag catches and springs first. It could have just been a bad batcg of mag catches or springs and the new ones you ordered are in spec.

spring bending
This makes the spring act like its shorter, as it bends to the right. Ty for you thoughts.

The crude measurements i took would seem to need a longer spring? The spring could be as mush as .015" longer. When the spring slips out of the notch in the release, is when everything seems to fall out of the gun.

But test firing is needed to know for sure. I think the magazine is doing the damage?? It knock the release out of position?
Snowed last night, so testing will be a while.

the straight spring bending could also be changing the angle enough that its slipping over that shallow ledge in the recess. It might be the magazine if it is catching the bottom edge of the mag catch and somehow twisting it up enough to damage the spring or dislodge it. Hard to believe a mag catch would fit that loose in the frame but I guess anything is possible. You could look for it by inserting the magazine and watch the mag catch from the outside (watch the thumb release/button) to see if its turning the mag catch. So what would be happening is... insert the magazine ...bends the spring...then pushing the mag release dislodges the bent spring out of the recess.

I have no idea. I searched taurusarmed.net but only found your thread. I am wondering if this was a problem that cropped up with the G3c and something that wasn't a problem with the Millennium G2 PT111.

There are some owners on YouTube whose guns did the same thing.

One YouTuber thinks that the spring is going to wear a channel in the polymer anyway, and there may be a problem with the notch on the back of the button not sticking out far enough or being too rounded to engage the spring rod.

If it is caused by the end of the spring wearing a channel in the polymer, I'm not sure how Taurus fixes it except by replacing the lower.

I understand how that piece of metal holds the magazine release in and keeps it from falling out but how does it keep the spring from working loose or falling out ?

The metal keeps the spring from slipping off the ledge of the release. Photo show the step, wrong side. The others side has the same step. The yellow dot 20220122_194234.jpg is where the spring should be.

By filling a gap where the arrow is pointing. But my photo is not looking like there is room for the metal piece?

Have to get the grandsons gun, so i can get a closer look. Stick a feeler gauge in there. The gap wound have to be larger then the springs diameter, to allow tne spring to move off the shelf. 20220122_195113.jpg

The arrow is ponting at the top shelf. The spring would contact the bottom one. The spring in photo is in front of the release. When installed, it in the back.

This sounds like Taurus created new frames and new mag release buttons

https://www.ar15.com/forums/handguns/PT111-G2-updated-mag-release/26-180680/

"If you have an older PT111 G2 with sloppy magazine fit and minimal magazine release engagement, do yourself a favor and order an updated release button from Taurus.

The other(and biggest) problem with the original design is that the protrusion on the front of the release that rides in the frame isn't quite long enough. Eventually it wears a small nick in the plastic frame and the release will fall out. Replacing it now will save you a headache later.

In addition to making that protrusion slightly longer, they enlarged the area that catches the magazine slightly in both length and width. The magazine now rides higher in the mag well and the release button needs to be pushed in a bit further before the mag drops."
