A late Christmas present for my ffl buddy.....

Put this together for my buddy Dell.

Guns was a Remington 783 sporter in .223.

New parts for the thing include, a 26" ershaw varmint barrel in .22-250AI, threaded bolt handle stud and glades bolt handle, action and trigger job, and duracoat on the whole thing.
The stock was opened for the new barrel and the action is bedded to it.... and yeah i painted it.....

I still need to get mounts, but when i do im going to put Athlon Midas btr on it.
I also still need to get a set of guages (or a box of 22-250 ammo), to set headspace.

Is .22-250 good for Hawaiian hogs or would it be more for sheep/ram sized game? Dont know that I would trust it to quickly drop our mature boars here.

Its a 1-8 twist so it SHOULD be good with bullets upto about 80gr i think. Id expect any of the 68+80s to be pretty lethal on goats and sheep, and a hard 60-64gr or a monometal to be pretty gnarly on anything needing the extra penetration.

My experience with small bullets going really fast is that they either kill like lightning, or don't penetrate far enough to cause lethal damage. Im hoping a monometal will give the best of both worlds.....if it ever gets used on game, hes not much of a hunter lol.

Have you used the savage style lock ring on a Remington before? Sure makes things easier.

I.....dont actually remember what mount i sent lol, probably not. I was gonna use an egw or something similar on this one.

The 783 has removable bolt heads, so i just bought a long action standard bolt and swapped heads (if anyone wants a long action .223 rem 783 bolt, im your guy!).
The barrels on these are basically the same as a savage small shank, so the nuts standard fair.
Honestly i lazed out, i usually use shouldered barrels because they look nicer to me, but this ones nutted. Tho i think i will buy a smooth nut for it.
Installing a nutted tube tho is way easier and less likely to be an issue!

I really like those short fat little rounds for some reason lol, just the right amount of chunky to look agressive without looking dumpy.

Hes also talkimg about building another .250AI, since he gave the one I built to his nephew.

Probably try get a model 7 and a quick twist barrel for that one.

A group of us are in for the Lani general hunt, and hopefully we'll be going home to Molokai this year, so if Dell decides to come along it might get some use on axis.

I wanted one pretty much the whole time I was growing up, figured all that velocity would make hitting stuff EASY!

I agree! I wanted to do a fast twist 22-250AI, 22-6mm, or 22-243, since I read a guns and ammo magazine article in 2000ish about them..... Or at least one of them, I cant remember exactly which now lol.

Ive got some 75 Amax to use as sheep/goat bullets.
Ill talk to Dell and seen what he wants to mostly shoot, and suggest those rmrs.

I'm reasonably impressed with most of the 783s bits and pieces. It's cheap without being really "low" quality feeling. It's supposed to be a bastardization of the xl/s 7, and it feels like it.

Figgured out the mounts lol.

I ran across an old Ruger American long action rail in my parts and decided to cut the middle out and use it on the 783.

Faced the pieces, painted, and installed with new screws.
Then got everything bolted together.....im pretty stoked with it.
