What rifles for deer hunting this year?

Well, due to a number of things did not get to leave for the cabin until Sat am. Got there and the generator would not start, so we had to pull it out of the steel security box we have (so we can leave it out and not have to drag it out and hook it up every time we go) and install the back up gen. By that time Sat was gone. Had planned on hunting through Tuesday (season is Jan 8-11) but heavy rain moved in Sat evening, and all night, as well as was POURING this morning. Not ideal for muzzle loader hunting, yes I have a blind but did not wan to make the walk in the rain, it was coming down pretty good. Rain was supposed to stop early this afternoon, but brother's wife called him and she tested positive for the 'rona, as well as two of our employees called with the same.

Soooooo, packed up and came home, get to go to work tomorrow, yay............................

Still may get out a day or two with the bow, but I much prefer firearm hunting. Ohio is supposedly over run by white tail, one would think they would give us a longer firearm season.
 
That’s a lousy way to end the season. I hope you have better luck next year. I enjoy still hunting in light rain but not with a muzzle loader.

Back in New York when it was shotgun only west of the susquehanna River I bought a 16 gauge model 37 and had Frank Gabriel down in Binghamton drill & tap the receiver for a scope. I killeda pile of deer with that set up. Still have that gun. It has the rattail fore end.
I bought another model 37 in twelve gauge-full choke 28 inch barrel, rattail forend. That gun sure can throw #00 buckshot. Still have it.

I love the model 66 Super-Singles.
I have three in 20 gauge, one of them has a vent rib. Perfect squirrel/ rabbit/grouse gun.
Then I have three of the model 66 in 410 gauge
Great safe little shotgun to start the kids out on.
The model 49 Ithaca 22lr & 22 magnums are another good little gun.
They were made with cheap materials and I never had any luck with the repeaters. They wore out another were garbage wall hangers.
I took one over to Kurt Stienz over in Bainbridge to get fixed about ten years ago and will never get it back.
Lots of memories with Ithaca guns.

I took my grandson back to New York for the last two weeks of October for two weeks of squirrel hunting and a week of fisher trapping.
He used a twenty gauge model 66 and did really good with the squirrels and we trapped two fishers. Great memories for my grandson and myself.

The young man looks like a natural!
 
He is a natural, I take him shooting every weekend from spring to late fall. Been taking him shooting since he was five years old. Now at ten years old he can shoot all day with out being supervised. He can shoot pistols just as good as shooting rifle and he is good shooting trap.
I bet him against any adult $1 a shot rifle, pistol or shotgun.
It is fun watching him put the dollars in his pocket.
With all of that practice he was a natural in the woods hunting.
One of the pleasures in my life.

What a legacy you are leaving in that young man!
 
I let him start shooting centerfire rifle two years ago. He has shot lots of 223, 243, 308, 30/06, 7.62x39, 30/30, 7mmTCU and a bunch of other calibers.
He shoots my brother in laws Remington 700 in 7mmag better then my brother in-law shoots it.

I have a butt load of rifles, shotguns and handguns.

He likes the AR15sand the SKS.
He wanted a AK so I bought one last year and i bought three cases of 7.62x39 ammo.
He prefers the sky.

He likes the Mini-14, the M1 Garand, the 30 caliber carbine, and the 357 mag and 44 mag revolvers and the Colt 1911 Combat Comander.

If it wasn't for reloading we wouldn't be able to shoot.

Here is how it all went down in the past tense- Mrs. Fl-NC took her first deer ( a 5 point buck, 3 x 2) with the Ruger American ranch 300 BLK, suppressed. I took a doe with an old Winchester 30-30 with iron sights (Williams rear), I took my final 2 bucks of the season with my Ruger American predator in 6.5 CM earlier this week.

Good season. I hunt on a large tract of family land with a few relatives and a close friend. My daughter took her first, a 6 point. Here’s the rifles used by the 4 of us that hunt

Browning semi auto in 270 Win
Remington 700 in 270 Win
Savage 110 in 308 Win
Remington 700 in 243 Win

They all do fine in taking deer. There’s been 6 deer taken this season among us and all calibers have been used to good effect.

Often the mere possibility of a kill far overshadows the actuality of oh-crap-now-I'll-spend-the-rest-of-the-evening-processing-this. :)
 
No new rifles of scopes for this year.
Still waiting on bow limbs to be finished.
Last yr was not a good one.
Didnt even see an antler.
Shoulder problems had me sit at home a bunch. Weather screwed things up a bunch of times I could go.
Was at PT when my buddy texted and got the 145 incher. Helped him fetch it w my good arm after PT

Keep up with your PT and next season may be your best season :thumbup:
 
Doc said Incan do the PT at home after 6 weeks. Impinged. Supposed to take 6 months to a yr if I take it easy.

My job is very physical so its gonna take longer, if it even allows full healing.

Oh well.

Have been cleared to shoot bow. Issue is how bad its gonna hurt LOL.

60 # wheels, 48# trad.
 
I tore my rotator cuff a few years back. Cranked my bow down to 45 then worked my way back up to 60. Took me about 3 months shooting 2-3 times a week.
 
The Lee-Enfield #4 Mk 1 * was in my rifle zone rotation this past year but I chickened out due to the new change in hunting hours, (now 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset) and I played with it before the season in low light and that little black front sight blade just doesn't stand out very well in low light. Perhaps in my younger days but not any more. Most deer I see are at the beginning or end of the day. So I spent more time with the 30-30 because it now has a Vortex Strike Eagle 1-8x scope with an illuminated reticle that I really like at dawn & dusk. Then wind up filling a doe tag with the 30-30 at 3:23 PM in broad daylight and never even used the illumination feature. I think that was the day it would have been the Lee-Enfield's turn in the rotation but I was afraid of a low light shooting situation with iron sights so I decided to stick with something I could aim better when the light fades. At least I filled a tag this year and the Enfield is gonna get first slot in the rifle zone rotation next season. IMG_2439.JPG .. ( # Maybe next year LOL)..
