Considering a Steyr Aug A1 M3 NATO

Most people say the STANAG capable AUGs work fine. I'm not sure but I BELIEVE that you lose the bolt release button on this version and are restricted to using the charging handle. But I'm not sure. My A3 waffle mag version has the bolt release button and the mags work great.

at 6:24 here MAC says you don't have the bolt release button on the Nato stock. If that matters.

I got to shoot several AUGs that were issued to Austrian and Australian forces about a decade ago. I would say the Nato stock was the biggest and best change they made to the AUG. The Australian guys in particular liked borrowing magazines from us (US troops), putting their issued 5.56 rounds in them and shooting the AUG. And they let us do the same thing. Because the bolt action is shorter and on the side, the lack of a bolt release wasn't too big of a deal when shooting them for us.

Honestly, this is the first time I've heard of the AUG being accurate. I bought my "Anniversary" AUG because I wanted an AUG!

The way the barrel gets affixed to the action isn't the most solid, nor is it free - floating.

And, there is that thing about it being a "combat rifle..."

Side Story: I had just bought my IDF Tavor at the shop, and I was talking to the guy over the counter, saying I hope it'd be accurate, given how much it cost (BUT, I already knew that - I bought my Tavor because... ...I wanted a Tavor!) - and there was this twentysomething kid who chimed in saying it was a "combat rifle" and whatnot...

...I think I shot him multiple times.

I had a nato
On its maiden range trip it jammed up bad. I was having double feeds..
A fix i never got around to trying is to lock back the bolt and store like that for a while.
I sold it to a former friend who got it going.
I now have a regular aug

I was unaware of it's reputation for suppression however and one appeal of a bullpup is the short OAL which lends itself to imagining suppression. That is food for thought and I might prefer a less accurate rifle better suited to suppression.

If you plan to shoot suppressed definitely don't go for the AUG. I got the muzzle adapters and suppressed mine and it was still not hearing safe due to the pop from the gas system.

So the muzzle blast becomes a gas piston blast?

Steyr makes gas ports which are supposedly "intended for suppressor use."

Are these not really worth it?

Dunno about those. Haven't tried them. But the regular AUG is pointless suppressed.

I have one I put the nato stock on and I’ve had no problems with it. I also swapped in a twenty inch barrel as I found I preferred the more original length.

Confirmed mine lacks the bolt release, but it does have a more ergonomic mag release button in addition to the standard release behind the mag.

Been awhile since it’s been out of the safe.

My experience with the AUG (STG 77) is not as an owner- I was a small arms instructor at the SF school at Ft Bragg for 3 years. Definitely not a fan of the rifle, in any of its configurations. There's a reason the Australian SOF units use the M4/ 416 - forsaking the Steyr used by the "big army".

I fired one long ago, when my eyes were good, back around mid-eighties. Civilian model.

Three shots, one hole at 100 yards, off the bench. Haven't fired one since.... I never thought it was anything other than dumb luck, but it happened!

I've heard great things about the accuracy and reliability and I sort of want a bullpup just for fun mainly but I want a "good" one.

Any AUG owners care to weigh in on the rifle? Think I'll be happy with one? And are the NATO stocked AUG as good as waffle mag stock?

I do have a couple and have a NATO stock kit I picked up for cheap when CDNN had them years ago. I've shot it at our local shoot and move rifle match a bunch of times.
1) I prefer the original AUG mag pattern although the Magpul version are very nice.
2) You do give up the rear bolt release with the NATO stock. OTOH, the CH is easy to reach if you're right handed and a big target so that never bothered me all that much.
3) Reliability wise I have had a handful of stoppages that were not user induced. One of the easiest stoppages to cause yourself only applies to the original Steyr pattern mags; If you insert the mag in too hard with the bolt open the top round can pop out of the mag. If you don't have the rifle rolled over for reloading and don't notice the loose round it will cause a stoppage when you drop the bolt.
4) Accuracy wise mine are 2MOA rifles. I say that after having shot multiple 10 shot groups over the years with different barrel lengths and different brands of (not match) ammo. The few times I've tried match ammo I never really got better than 2MOA.
4a) Removing the barrel and replacing it has no effect on POI that I've ever been able to discern.
4b) Swapping to a different barrel will change the POI.
5) The rifle runs much cleaner than a AR. The guts don't really get any powder fouling in them and the working parts don't burn off lube.
6) It's a easy rifle to take care of. It strips into big chunky parts that are easy to knock gross fouling off of so you can lube, reassemble and keep running. It's also easy to detail strip w/o tools if you need to break it down further.
7) Although it offers no adjustability mine fits me.

All in all I've been really happy with mine. I prefer it to the Tavor, but that's because of my own idiosyncrasies.
