Carry philosophy / perspective agree or disagree with me.

In this example, carrying the 22 by choice makes it defacto preferred.

Hypothetical example:
Someone has a 22 mini revolver, 38 snub and Sig 365.
They choose to carry the 22 for a "quick trip to the store".

I say carrying the 22 implies they would prefer to defend themself with it instead of their other options.

Agree or disagree.

Most likely I'd disagree. Given a preference I'd carry a rifle of shotgun. I CHOOSE to carry a handgun for convenience. And I often CHOOSE a smaller handgun than I'd prefer simply due to concealability constraints. There are times where a bigger gun just isn't practical.

You also have to balance perceived need. The greater I perceive the odds of a threat to be, the more likely I am to carry a bigger, more effective gun.

I don't have a tiny 22 but wouldn't mind having one. I've seen enough evidence to believe they are more effective than a lot of people think. My smallest handgun is a Kel-Tec P3AT in 380. I rarely carry it but depending on how I'm dressed it is often the best choice.

Disagree. I think it implies they don't think they will need a gun. But also that on an emotional level, they prefer the comforting feeling of having a gun of some description on their person. Which I consider to be the magical talisman effect.

Just my two cents of course . :)

I recall a wound ballistics book from the 90's discussing the effectiveness of 22lr in ending things. Off to find the book and post up a page.

BTW, I see nothing wrong with carrying a 22lr, personally I'd like something bigger most of the time (9mm). But as stated above there can be times where a larger arm is difficult to conceal..

Edit: They mention it in passing but all data starts with 380. Marshall & Sanow 1st edition.

NO! I like my .22's as plinkers and target shooting, but not as self defense guns. I carry a CZ P-01 or a CZ 97b.whenever I go armed. I have carried the SA Hellcat in a concealment shirt but even that is a 14 shot 9MM. No "drop in the pocket" .22's or 7 shot .380's for me though I own both.

I see your point but I do disagree. A handgun is a small part of your personal safety equation. If carrying a small handgun (my smallest is an LCP) does not mean you are lazy or somehow convinced it’s more than enough. Nothing you listed is a great choice if things really get bad. Hopefully what it means is that after careful evaluation you decided that your situation is such that a little .22 is adequate for what you may face. No one size fits all. We all live in different locals with different social situations. What is good enough for me may not be for you and that is fine. I always think of it like this. If a person that never carried a firearm just purchased a .22, learned how to use it is comfortable with it who I’m I to disagree. Just that step up put them in a whole better situation.

Disagree.

It implies to me they don't really believe they'll need a gun.

Everything is a balancing act, and no one I know has a crystal ball. If I knew I needed a 12ga shotgun to go to the store, I wouldn't go... but you never know when you will be thrust into a situation. A .22 mini revolver is better than an index finger, but isn't as good as the other two choices... but if you are wearing sweat pants or gym shorts, it's not likely you are going to kit up just to go to the store. If a .22 mini fits in the equation, well, that's better than nothing.

I think it implies that he is uneducated in what is effective as a defensive weapon.

But maybe his "quick trip to the store" is to rob it, and he figures the .22 is as intimidating as the .38 or 9mm when pointed at somebody.

Ive been carrying a 22MAG NAA "Mini" in my back pocket for about a year or so now. Its not "my gun", and more of a novelty. It might could come in handy in certain instances, or be something I could hand off to my wife or buddy who refuse to carry their own guns, but its certainly not something Id choose to carry as a primary or "only" gun.

My "quick trip to the store" gun is the same gun I put on with my pants in the morning, and take off with them at night when I go to bed, every day, a Glock 17. But you could say the Mini fits that bill too, as it is along, just very unlikely the one Im grabbing if "I need a gun". :)

I respectfully disagree. I say carrying the 22 implies they prefer to carry a smaller gun for ease of carry not necessarily because it’s the best option for self defense.

Personally, I wouldn’t carry an NAA mini revolver as my only means of self defense.

"just in case" amiright

And if they do have to defend themself it would be with a 22 because that is what they chose to carry.
They may not think their action implies that what is preferred but by default it is, they could have picked any of the three.
People don't think it be like it is but it do.

Re-re-reading the original question... I must admit, I'm scratching my head.

Is it really a 'preference?' If someone would have a preference for, using your example, a .22 mini... you would carry it all the time, not just for a quick jaunt to the store. If the choice is to go unarmed, or with a .22 mini... I would have a 'preference' to not go unarmed.

I voted 'no,' because dropping the .22 mini in the pocket is a choice of that moment, not necessarily a preference to defend one's self with a .22 mini.

With the extended mag, I can get 7+1 in my XDs in .45 ACP., and easily conceal in any season's clothing, so no .22 for me.

I carried a .22LR for a while, an S&W 422. Only handgun I had for a while. I also carried a Hi-Standard .22 WRM derringer for some time. Were either my preferred choice? No. They were better than nothing, though.

Outside of work, I'm usually carrying my Xd40 or G19 with a .380 as a backup, usually on my ankle. Most days at work I'm in Khaki's and a short sleeve polo, tucked in. I ain't concealing my XD40 or my G19 in those clothes, so I have to carry something smaller. It's not my preference, my preference would be a 44mag or my new G20. Its' a matter of compromise, preference vs reality.

I disagree. However, I would say that person definitely prefers carrying the 22 much more than the other options.

I think that folks who can handle a larger caliber who then chose to carry a lesser effective gun are just either lazy or uninformed. He is my thinking by example.

It’;s stinking hot and humid day. I am going out for a quart of milk. I am wearing a tee shirt and lightweight belt-less shorts. Gosh, my 9mm Security 9 Compact is to heavy for belt-less shorts and too big for a pocket. What do I do? I change out of my shorts. Why? One, I am not lazy; 2, I am informed enough to know the 9mm is a better self defense tool; 3, I think staying alive is more important than not wanting to change clothes.
