I know most gun control laws are stupid, but this one seems exceptionally stupid.

It’s Alabama House Bill 462. Full bill here

Next week, the House will consider House Bill 462, to create a state registry of individuals who renounce their Second Amendment rights..…..

HB462 creates the Voluntary Alabama Firearms Do-Not-Sell List where individuals can apply with the state to add themselves, with the information sent to FBI’s NICS. In addition to licensed firearm dealers being prohibited from transferring firearms to them, punishable as a Class A misdemeanor, those individuals will be prohibited from possessing or transporting firearms, punishable as a Class C misdemeanor.

I bet that’ll be a long list, seriously who thinks of this stuff? What possible good does anyone think this could it do?

Of all the gun control laws, and proposals, I’ve seen this one may be the most pointless. What a colossal waste of money it would be.

Fortunately here in AL I don’t think this has a snowballs chance in July.

I wonder how many who would sign it, would discover they were actually "prohibited persons" anyhow according to the law.

After all, it's ridiculously easy to get on the government's "rescinded rights" list. And the way they keep felonizing everything, it gets easier and easier.

Someone who is having mental issues (thoughts of suicide, fantasies of mass murder, etc.) may, in a moment of lucidity, want to prevent himself from being tempted in the future. This is similar to how certain monks in the Middle Ages went so far as to castrate themselves to avoid being sexually tempted.

The voluntary gun disqualification is not as far-fetched as it sounds.

The real question is whether the State should be a party to this. And whether such a disqualification, once granted, can be voluntarily rescinded.

This sounds like a victory lap after constitutional carry/the sheriffs going turn coat. Let DNC aligned Alabama walk the walk with really being anti-2A.

edit: sadly not that kind of bill.

Never think there is not a reason for every move they make. These people are not that stupid. Evil yes. Not stupid. What seems pointless today may be a knife in your back tomorrow. Take it seriously. Never let your guard down.

All it would take is another summer of "mostly peaceful protests" for this idea to be a bad one for first time buyers who voluntarily added themselves. Seeing the two sponsors, I am not surprised by the stupidity of the bill.

Dumbest proposal I’ve ever seen. Next they’ll take names to voluntarily castrate themselves to prevent rape.

This bill would create the Voluntary Alabama Firearms Do-Not-Sell List and would allow an individual to restrict his or her ability to purchase or possess a firearm by voluntarily adding his or her own name to the Voluntary Alabama Firearms Do-Not-Sell List when there is a fear that he or she may become a risk to himself or herself or others.
This bill would also provide methods by which an individual on the Voluntary Alabama Firearms Do-Not-Sell List may remove his or her own name from the list.

They've proposed a state system, with penalties for violations, whereby someone could fill out a form to make them a prohibited person for firearms purchases and fill out a separate form to have themself removed from the prohibited person status.

While it may seem odd that someone with the presence of mind to complete the form and submit it to make themselves a prohibited person would need to add this level of control to their life I have known people that recognized they had poor impulse control under certain circumstances and took measures to limit their ability to act until after they have had time to "cool down".

My concern about such a proposed law is that it becomes an argument for automatic waiting periods to force folks to "cool down" before receiving a firearm. Folks that have no need to cool down, folks in immediate need after recognizing a threat, and those very few who would benefit from a cooling down period.

I once knew a guy who was going through a nasty divorce, wife had moved on to another guy and he decided to sell any guns he had because he was very distraught. I imagine maybe as others pointed out, folks that are good natured and decent but find themselves at certain emotional extremes to the point where they've concerned themselves, might want to join this list? Idk. It's hard to imagine anybody going through the trouble or having themselves flagged but maybe.....

So... that implies I can renounce any other rights, too.

So, since the police and military are using guns in your behalf, and you've renounced your rights, would it be ethical for them to use their guns on your behalf? I'd say not...

Though I suspect the true purpose of the bill is to establish the list in the first place; then it will be amended so that "qualified" people can add your name to it involuntarily.

That's exactly what I would be afraid off. It's just like the pistol permit law here in NC. it's an old Jim crow law disguised as something ment for public safety. It allows the sheriff of a county to arbitrarily set the standards for getting a permit in his county. This was originally done for racist purposes but is now used in left wing counties to make it difficult for anyone to get a pistol. This AL law could easily be tweaked in the future to allow sheriffs or others to start deciding who is fit to own a firearm

Considering we (Alabama) just passed Constitutional Carry, I really don't think this bill is going to go anywhere besides the trash. Plenty of the state Sheriffs protested the CC legislation but it literally flew through the various committees. It was introduced, amended, and passed in about a month. Pretty quick by AL standards.

Never, ever underestimate the ability for people in elected office to try and out-stupid each other with gun control ideas every passing election cycle.

These “progressive leaders” of our bodies politic have collectively struck rock bottom…yet are continuing to dig.

Stay safe.

It seems that the Anti-2A crowd has succeeded in changing the perception of the 2nd Amendment from an inherent right to a privilege. This was the primary argument against the Bill of Rights to begin with.

That seems kind of genius actually. I hope it passes so we can see how many...opfor party members will put their money where their mouth is so to speak.

If such a process is enacted into law, it becomes a simple matter to require that someone charged with a crime "sign up" as one of the conditions of deferred prosecution, dismissing charges or release from a mental illness hold (which does not reach the level of an adjudication). It would easily be expanded and weaponized. The sponsors should be shamed and humiliated for their complicity in this scheme.

Good to hear. My brother recently moved to Enterprise and he really seems to like the level of personal freedom y'all enjoy down there although he is not much of a firearms kinda guy

Can you renounce a Constitutional right?
Putting yourself on a gun "no fly" list is one level below that. In other words, you don't renounce your right to possess a gun; you merely block someone from selling you one. Presumably, if you go that far, you would be giving up your existing guns voluntarily. Which you have the right to do. No one is forcing you to have a gun.
