I have a Savage Axis in 6.5 Creedmore and I hate the OEM stock. I am going to purchase a new Boyds stock, preferable a walnut one, and I want to check and see if there is a history of stock breakage with the Savage action.

Thank you very much.

Breakage of which stock? Boyds stock do not have a history of breakage and the OE Savage stock is better than given credit for. Face it, on an enthusiast board it might be 60% wood and blue and 40% stainless and synthetic/laminate but in the real world it is overwhelmingly synthetic stocks because (mostly) guys prefer durability at a cheap price and light weight is in now also.

Yeah the stock on an Axis really sucks. Many guys reinforce them with arrow shafts and filler. Yeah a Boyds stock should be great.

I guess I didn't really state my question very well. Do modern Savage rifles with walnut stocks have a tendency to break at the wrist? If there is a history of breakage and people are using arrow shafts and filler to strengthen them then I will go the laminate route.

No, tho IMO/EXP boyds sporter stocks are a little thinner thru the wrist than i like now.
I still wouldn't expect you to have any issues with them.

Actually, if Savage stocks have a failure point, it's usually by that right side safety cut out, and relatively small rear screw contact area.... On the axis I don't think that's an issue though.

I misunderstood. It is the plastic stocks that need reinforcement. I don't know about the wood stocks.

My father-in law has the Axis with walnut stock (Boyd’s). I’ve purchased Boyd’s walnut stocks for my father-in-law and son for their Savage 10s. (Pic below). No issues at all with any of them.

I replaced the stock on my Axis with a laminate…very happy with it, but I do like the Walnut better.

Have you noticed much of a weight difference between the walnut abs the laminate?

I'm sure the laminate is heavier, but how noticeable is the difference?

I got a Savage Axis XP from Wally World on clearance a year and a half ago, and low and behold it already HAD a Boyd's walnut stock. Swapped that one onto my Axis II in .223 Rem. because THAT one had a camo synthetic stock that was WAY flimsy (not worried about breakage, but couldn't keep a group less than 1.5" with anything in the .223).. Bought a Boyd's Spike Camp for the Axis XP. Now after the swap I need to get ammo loaded so I can shoot 'em and see if the swap helped or not.

I can attest to that. I have two Model 11 stocks that broke in exactly the same spot. One the original factory plastic stock and the other A Richards Microfit Walnut. Now I also have a Boyds At-One on that Model 11 and it has a delamination between the mag well thru to the trigger inletting and right thru the rear action screw hole. I have already contacted Boyds and was told to cut it in half and send them a picture and they would replace it.

Had a boyds for about 6yrs and no issues. Its laminate though. If its a target shooting gun I would get a thumbhole or pro varmint instead.

No, they don’t have any history of specific failure like that.

One thing, Boyd’s does not sell Walnut “Hardwood” stocks. All their stocks are Laminate. We’re you just meaning the “look”, perhaps. And not a bad thing BTW. The laminate is much stronger than actual Walnut hardwood is. People like solid wood for ascetics. But, in-fact solid wood is barely an upgrade from the cheap factory plastic.

They do sell various grades of solid hardwood, it's an upcharge though.

The majority of their business is dealing in laminates though for certain.

I have an Axis and was wondering about a Boyd stock as well, just the synthetic one. I painted the plastic stock cammo.
This gun wears a nikon prostaff 3-9X-40mm and is an amazing tack driver for coyote hunting! It performs better than the Remington 700ADL I had before it.
I've been wanting to get one but wasn't sure if there was any finish fitting I would have to do. I'm traveling to South dakota where they're at, may stop in and investigate.
I also called Savage to inquire if the wood stocks that are made for the slightly better Axis II would fit,, and they said yes they fit the plain Axis.

Are you guys certain? Because their homepage says exactly what what I did. I don’t don’t make things up. Maybe they do, but it’s NOT what Boyd’s is known for, and they certainly don’t advertise solid wood.

Go to Boyds site and put in the Axis rifle (or many others) and you will see that Boyds does indeed offer (solid) walnut stocks in several grades. I have seen them and they look fine.

You have to dig a little deeper in their site and you'll see it in the options. That heading is a bit of a oversight on their part. Perhaps they could have worded it a little better. I can certainly see how that would be misleading.

Just did a quick build for a Boyds Classic stock for a Savage Model 10. To add a Claro Walnut option to that stock added $199.00 to the price.

That was the reason I went with a Richards Microfit for the Model 11, Yes that is the stock I dropped and broke.

LOL! You can see how it could be misleading? Misleading??

“EVERY Boyd’s gunstock is constructed of top-grade LAMINATED Hardwood”?

Uh, yeah… I can see how someone might might simply take them at their word..
I’m just kidding.

Again though. It’s not their thing. Boyd’s claim to fame is their laminated stocks, and that is what they promote. I still don’t understand why some people prefer solid hardwood. It’s overly expensive & performs horribly. Well, I guess I do get it. The look; which is fine of course. But in the search of accuracy, wood is among the first thing to go!

Yeah, well, maybe you could give some cred to the word of those of us here that have bought several Boyd's rifle stocks.

Why? I don’t know you. You mean nothing in my world. As I’m sure I’m nothing in yours.

And not for nothin’, but I actually did lament on it. Read what I said again. Me: “Maybe they do, but it’s not what what Boyd’s is known for.”

I can promise you I don’t care either way. So… good stuff & that's about all. :)

Well, you're wrong on at least the third point, and you're the poorer for it. One presumes that someone who comes here asking for information and opinion gives some weight to the answers they receive, or else they wouldn't waste their time coming here to do that. Because I don't believe that we're wasting our time here responding to those questions, even when we get a response like yours.
