I’ve started working this season with our State PR club to do more marketing, outreach, and advocacy for the sport, part of which has involved my wife and I (mostly my wife) doing a lot of photography and some videography work during our club matches. Admittedly, as sports photographers, it’s a bit of a unique challenge to capture PRS action - first because of the safe firing line, second because of the volume of positions and shooters, and - ironically - the opportunity for redundancy. But it has been a satisfying endeavor so far - capturing another sport for which we’re passionate but largely doesn’t have much common coverage.
Here are some of the shots we’ve captured this spring, working to keep some aesthetic appeal and capture dynamicism and shooter emotion, even though maybe 100 shooters might fire from the same positions over the course of the day.

A few more my wife and I like - but the software only allows 10 at a time.
The early sun in the cool morning behind a suppressor only match made ideal opportunity for a lot of “poof pics” at Box Canyon Showdown:
Also meant a little extra smoke left in the rifle and ejecting cartridges:
A fellow Kansas shooter must have been a little dehydrated at the match - I guess this illustrates the act of “holding hard” on target.”
And this little guy seemed a little lonely:

Dusted off the match wagon and took a trip to a 1 day PRS match this weekend. Came in the day before and camped on site. Got pretty much everything I need. Shade, Fridge freezer for ice and drinks and lunch. Bottle rack for whiskey (though I didn’t bring any) and comfy sleeping quarters. Toilet, shower and hot/cold water sink. Air compressor in truck to knock the water or dust off gear.
Match was fun. Stages were cool. This was my 2nd match since I stopped shooting in 2016. (The other was a night match in 2019.). Humorously, my PRS number is 55 and the next lowest one was 1500 and most were 3000-9000+. Wow. I feel old.
I haven’t practiced in years, shot the wrong targets on 3 stages, timed out on 3 stages and still came in top half. Ugh. But I got to hang out with the cool people for a day again and that was worth the trip.
anyone else have a match wagon or you guys pretty much stick to hotels?

I have a 42’ toy hauler that I would take to multi-day matches when the kids were at home and going with me.

I had various “self contained accommodations” over the years, really driven by my professional rodeo career, but they sure made longer distance matches convenient too. I really liked bed mounted, over cab sleeper campers, but I did have a couple trailers over the years as well. I think my retrofit conversion van was my favorite, I used a pop up shower and built an electric water heater into the rear quarter panel, had a bed inside, small A/C & heat unit ran by generator when parked, had a little gas cook top, but usually packed cooler meals. But we rarely spent more than one day/night in any one place before we were on to the next one.
For PRS matches in recent years, I just drive same day in and out for 1 day matches, never have to get more than 2 hours from home to shoot 3wknds per month if I wanted, and for 2 day matches, I grab hotels. As my wife and son have started coming more and more matches, and the volume of “stuff” we bring is increasing, I’ve considered going back to a pop up camper for 2 day matches - but I’m really working on them to reduce how much “stuff” we haul around.

I went to a one day match there, I think either 2018 or 2019. They host regular Missouri Steel Tactical matches which are PRS Midwest sanctioned matches, and every season I tell myself I want to shoot more MOST matches to try and also make their finale, but we have so many opportunities closer in Kansas that I always end up picking my closer matches. Similar to the storied history between Kansas and Missouri, the MOST and KPRC match series are largely divided at Kansas City, so very little overlap happens between the series - MOST goes East from KC, KPRC is all West of KC, and we kinda only overlap at Ottawa (effectively, KC). But Vapor Trail does great matches.

I substitute MD’d a regional match last weekend at a range here in KS, and found these in the ridge behind one of our ~1050 yard targets as I was painting and changing batteries in the flasher. Still wouldn’t want to be standing beside the target under fire.

Yeah that would still make a mark
I made a four position prop (repeat one of course) for shooting off of, the heights will be 2, 3, 4, & 5 feet. It will be good for practicing moving and getting on target more quickly. The tube system folks left a pile of strut channel that they use to mount stuff with. Naturally, after it had been obviously abandoned, I stuck it back in a storage shed. I made this out of two pieces. A 7' piece, a 5' piece, and seven 1' pieces. All I need to do is a little grinding, some smoothing/cleanup wit the wire wheel, and some paint.
Hmm, if I add some cross pieces on the inside it will have more spots to shoot off/out of....hmmm.
I also made a tank trap to shoot off of. More to come. Will be shooting .22 LR off of them.

We were down at the NRAWC range in Raton, NM over Memorial Day weekend. They have a big steel "Buffalo" at 1115 yards. Wind was brutal that day, gusting to 25 MPH from 8:00, so it still made a target that large a challenge. I set my wife up for a shot with my 6.5X47, loaded with 123 grain Nosler Custom Competition, and told her to hold 1 MIL off the tail. 3 dings in a row. Her longest ever before that was 500 so she was pretty happy. She couldn't believe how long it took for the sound of the impact to come back

No, eye pro is not required - I only know a couple of guys which do wear eye pro.
I shot the PRS match at Raton last month, and was glad to get a chance down there, as I had never been. I was a bit disappointed to not take or make opportunity to shoot the Buffalo and get the T shirt, so was my 8yr old son who tagged along with me, but I know I’ll be back down next season, so we’ll get that rite crossed off of the bucket list then.
My buddy Jeff and I are going to shoot an NRL-22 match at Altus Sunday, so we went to the range to check zero and get data out to 300 yards, we were both changing lots of ammo. It was 95+ this evening, and will be in the low to mid 90's Sunday
Our last two shots at 300 yards touched off almost simultaneously. What are the odd of this happening? A million to one?

Thompson center and smith and wesson went together on a long range rifle ....mine will shoot 2.5" at 600yds all day...(on calm days that is) 6.5 creed

You need to get you and that rifle to a mid range F Class match. 2.5” all day will break national records!
I saw those when they came out and thought…..,nice, they’re gonna sell lots of those.

Really ? I've never shot any matches I have seen articles where people were getting those size groups at 1000yds I figured 600 yard winners were doing 1.5 or better. Either way I'm happy just banging steel and jugs at 600 off my back porch. Hell that's just slight better than 1/2 moa. The rifle does look alittle better now .since that pic I have added a harris bipod that tilts and swivels also some weights to better spot my shots.You need to get you and that rifle to a mid range F Class match. 2.5” all day will break national records!

Yeah , they had slight issues with the trigger which is very clean and crisp at about 2 lb but I was able to fix that with a small dab of grease...thankfully because timney or anyone else doesn't yet make an aftermarket trigger for them. Still seemed like a good deal for $1300 nib.
