Which for a spare bcg

I carry a spare bcg and what started out as a $50 special has been loaned out multiple times and is now upgraded to a nickel finish PSA unit, it has been benefit to about 5 or 6 people at the range and then they replace it (I have not needed it yet). A friend just purchased a Aero nickel unit for his 6arc AR and is very pleased and is using his standard unit as a backup. If you have multiple calibers ARs is to look into extra bolts also.

Personally, for a spare, I'd probably pick of a nickle-boron finished one from PSA. Actually, I'd probably use that as my primary one and make my current one the backup.

I chose a ToolCraft (now owned by PSA). In addition to a spare complete bolt, I also recommend a handful of forged/machined extractors, and a spring kit.

Another Toolcraft fan.
Never had an issue with one, other than a nitride blemish, and they replaced that one and told me to keep the parts I had. Their CS was nothing short of outstanding.

Some years back I knew a guy that was a part owner of a LGS. He had a side business assembling BCG’s. About 325,000 a year. Had some type of automated equipment that could turn out a complete unit every 15 seconds.
He made them for many of the large manufacturers, but due to non-disclosure agreements he couldn’t specify which, but he said they were very large and well known. All were identical, at least the ones he produced

ToolCraft, Aero, Ballistic Advantage... No need to buy a boutique BCG from BCM, Geissele, and Spikes (Spikes most definitely does not manufacturer their own BCG or receivers). For the price of those, buy 2 or 3 ToolCraft or Aero BCGs.
Both ToolCraft and Aero/Ballistic Advantage BCGs are very respected and have to be the most used.

I've had good luck with Aim Surplus house brand
Normally more affordable than other options and milled with "debris cuts" (who knows if that's a good it bad thing)

Rgr - thx. I always assumed that the flats were created for ease of machining and not for functional improvement.

Honestly, that may very well be the case and they just came up with a functional justification (accurate or not) as a selling point.

Heard them called “sand cuts” before. I don’t believe PSA has purchased ToolCraft but ToolCraft does make the carriers for PSA. No idea who makes PSA bolts though. My money always goes to ToolCraft, all of them at this point (5). Used to be 6 of 8 with an additional 2 from RRA and PSA.

This is usually what sand cuts look like (modeled after the FAL):
Not saying that there aren't different ways to the same place, but usually a sand cut is literally a relief cut into the bearing surface to allow spooge and grit to have a place to settle that's out of the way. In the case of the AIM bolt carrier, the relief is in the non-bearing surfaces.

Looking into the matter as much as my Google-fu will allow, D. Ray Porter owns ToolCraft Inc of Marion, NC and that is not the owner of PSA. ToolCraft does supply bolts to PSA and under defense contracts supplies materials unspecified to FN (likely carriers, if not full BCGs). If someone has proof that PSA has absorbed them I’d love to see a link.

Ya, I tried to dig and couldn't find anything about them having been acquired. I know they've been supplying for PSA for quite awhile, but don't think they actually absorbed them.
