No Revolver Ammo in the Store

I have a friend who just bought a .44 Mag. He asked me if I could make him some ammo, but I don't have dies or brass for .44...I sold all my .44s (and the dies, brass, etc...) ten or so years ago.
I do .45LC and .38/.357
I did some looking and found some .44Mag ammo at Scheels (for about $1.20/rd) and bought him a box of 50. First time I have bought factory ammo in a long time.
I will try and sell him on handloading. But if you have a Scheel's nearby, have a look. They might have something for you.

My local gun shop gets .38 Special and .357 Mag but it sells out the same day. I broke down and ordered .357 on-line last night from the only store that had it in stock.
Out of stock and back ordered flags for three pages before I found something on hand.

Seems like a demand that deserves supply to me.
 
I'm almost considering converting our Speed and Security Sixes over to 9mm. Now that the police and military don't use it, the manufacturers don't feel the need to put out as much .38 and .357. Feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm very satisfied with my LCRx in 9mm.

Before I spent the money to convert revolvers that have gained collector status I would just buy a simple reloading set up and reload the ammo myself. That gets you away from depending on factory ammo ever again. Hopefully you have saved all your brass from the rounds you have shot up.

Lee press and 38 Special dies. The 38 dies will also reload 357 rounds.

You can get a Lee "O" press and dies for a reasonable cost. A box of 500 lead bullets cost around $50. I will admit that right now primers and powder may be a bit hard to get. Several here have stated they have ordered 38/357 ammo on line. But no, I wouldn't convert my Ruger guns.

Yes. It's not a choice that I really want to do. I'll hang on a few years before changes are made. Then I'll be retired(hopefully!) and have more time to pursue a reloading hobby. Hopefully. From what I read here, it seems most of our members who retired are busier now than when they were working! Lol!

Thats what my retired buddy says. He needs a job again so he can take it easy. Reloading doesn't take that much time. I don't sit around and reload every day. I do loading runs where I load 200-500 rounds at a time. But not that often. I do that or mess with my guns in some other manner rather than spend my time sitting in front of a life wasting television. You just have to figure out what is important to you.

I have a porch. I don't need a TV. ;)
Yes, watching grass grow IS more entertaining than television. Much more.

It's only slightly better now, a few months later.

They're catching up with stock on 9 mm and 22LR. 45 ACP to a lesser degree. 44 Magnum though? forget it. Primers? Nope. :-(
 
I greatly prefer buying off the shelf over mail orders. Some .38 Special can now be found near me, but .357 Magnum is still very, very, scarce. No wad cutters at all, but plenty of lead round nose and FMJ in .38. I have plenty of .22LR, .32ACP, 9mm, .45ACP, and .380ACP so I don’t even pay attention to those shelves. Concentrating on revolver ammo in .38 and .357.
 
I definitely should have checked the ammo shelf before buying my Blackhawk in 357. I do reload but getting enough brass together was a quest.
 
I have a decent supply now. I have about 100 pieces I’m running through, which is enough for load testing and off hand practicing. I never knew a single action could be so much fun. Of course I would have more fun if ammo was still $15/50 for 357 and $10/50 for 38 Special.

Amen! Watching the deer and turkeys only a few yards away from the house is better than any tv. Good thing for them I'm not starving.
I agree with the statements that manufactures are (wisely) taking care of the owners of the millions of different makes and models of 9mm bottom feeders. The money is in that market, sadly not so much in the .38/.357 market
My situation is different ...I'm sitting on plenty of .38/.357, and shoot little of it anymore because most of the S&W collection was sold off. Still have my favorites, but don't shoot them as often as in the past.
I won't bother with posting any of it for sale online because of PITA (as intended to be) shipping regulations, and selling just one or two boxes at a time would make it even more slow and arduous.
Maybe not the best idea, but I'm thinking that the only way I could quickly and easily unload is to post it for sale and have the buyer pick it up at a gun show... But with today's fuel prices any long drive just to pick up ammo is not for most people... guess I'm stuck with it and need to make more time for shooting ;)
