If .357 magnum is known for its 1-Shot Stop ability, would you say it's fair to say .223/.556 would be a reliable 1-shot stop in most cases as well? Would you say .223/.556 does more damage than 9mm, .40, .45, .357mag, etc.? Or no?
Yes, absolutely 556 (from a rifle) is going to do a lot more damage than those mentioned handgun rounds. I think it's a reliable 1-shot stopper as well, though I still train to double-tap. Each shot is over 1,000ft/lbs of energy, with a bullet moving fast enough to exceed the elasticity limits of the body (larger permanent wound track than just .22, from tissue being pushed out of the way so fast).

There is one concern I have about using a rifle for HD over a handgun - the possibility of someone grabbing the barrel as you turn a corner and either deflecting the rifle or even pulling it from your grasp. I believe that this is much less likely with a handgun.

5.56 out of a rifle is way more powerful than those common handgun rounds.

One shot stops happen with every round and don't happen with every round. It's not a garauntee with anything realistically man portable.

Ive seen guys take multiple rifle rounds in the chest until they went down. I've seen a guy take a 7.62 Nato M118LR in the chest from a M24 sniper rifle and then run about 200 meters before he died. Ive also seen someone take a 22lr in the chest from a short barrel pistol and fall down instantly and not move at all after.

In general rifles are far more effective than handguns. But they still don't garauntee a one shot stop.

My preferred home defense firearm is my 12 gauge with a 18-½" barrel sporting '00' buckshot.

As far as my EDC is concerned, be it my Kimber Micro 9 or my S&W CSX both with short 3"+ plus barrels that don't really develop the velocity needed to effectively fire 124 gr JHP's to consistent expansion when traveling thru denim or heavy Carhartt type material. I prefer to carry the ARX 65 gr rounds that are barrier blind on offer consistent penetration. They are unaffected by clothing and have shown to develop the same wound channel as a fully opened JHP.
