Silly question but I take for granted that many don't realize or at least consider the plethora of cartridges you can get an AR-15 chambered in other than the original 223/556. So I thought I would make a quick thread with a poll to see what percentage of your AR-15 based rifles/pistols are chambered in 223/556. For the sake of this poll we will treat 223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO chambers as the same and lump in all the other hybrid chambers for these two very similar cartridges together.

Ask my wife how many pairs of shoes/purses of any given color she has…

She won’t know either and still acquires new ones from time to time. Wasteful, somewhere in China is a child that can’t go shooting because of my gross consumption…

At this point I have more uppers than lowers. I have uppers chambered in 22LR, 223/556, 300 AAC Blackout, 30 Remington AR, 450 Bushmaster, and 67mm (Can-Cannon).

I would love to add a pistol caliber and maybe an intermediate caliber like 6.5 ARC, 6.8 SPC II or similar.

At this point I have more uppers than lowers. ...
This! Better approach for me is to state that only 3 of mine (so far) are not .223/5.56; one 7.62x39 and two .300AAC.

OK, we'll call it 80+%. :)

O'course, that does not account for the 5(?) Uppers, 2 Lowers (picked'em up just last week), 5(?) BCGs, 3(?) barrels, and on and on in my AR-15 Parts Pile Accumulation.

And, yeah, I realize that I have some Issues ... ;)

Actually, I am planning on gifting a few to some family members.

As a collector of U.S. military arms, all my AR's are in 5.56 mm.

In fact, it upsets me that new lowers are now invariably marked "Multi" for the caliber. If I'm going to build a rifle in 5.56 mm, I want it to say what it is.

Certainly not trying to hijack this thread, so let` s not let my post do so, but I`m surprised that the extreme gun control faction hasn`t taken more of a run at limiting access to 5.56 and .223 ammunition. If I wanted to hobble the use of large numbers of AR platformed guns, that`s what I`d try to do. Of course, there may be no more likelihood of that (hopefully ) than currently exists with a total ban on AR style platforms. Just an aside and observation.

So much money and time has been spent making the AR15 platform reliable with 223/5.56 rounds, and the 75 Hornady will hold the X ring at 600 yards, I never saw the need to change calibers. Rifles, such as the Grendels, crack lugs too soon, a bud was given an extra bolt when he had his AR15 converted to 6.5 Grendel. The extra bolt was there to replace in first bolt, when the first bolt cracks its lugs.

I also saw shooters struggling to make their AR15's feed other rounds. Many were jam a matics. It is very hard to improve on the ballistics of the 223 round, without creating some unreliability elsewhere, and it is easy to end up with a cartridge with lesser ballistics, because you can't stuff enough powder in a case that fits within a 223 magazine well.

I do have about ten Colt made 222 Remington magazines. They are identical to the 223 magazine except for the floor plate. I was told these were made for Australians, as they could not own a rifle made in a military caliber. That was before all semi autos were banned in Australia. The 222 Remington is not a ballistic upgrade from the 223, but I suppose it was good enough for someone who wanted to shoot an AR15.

When it came to the 308 Win, I wanted real battle rifles, such as the FAL

and then my beloved M1a. Earned my Distinguished Rifleman badge, shooting 308 Win, iron sights, and a M1a

I've got 8 total, 3 are 5.56. The other five are two .300Blk, two 6.5Grendel and one .22LR.

I've got other parts and barrels but don't have any wayward lowers or uppers laying around. Everything is assembled into a complete rifle or pistol.

I've given two in 5.56 as gifts, if that counts.

This is what all my center fire AR-15 are chambered in. I have never found the non-223/556 rounds feed better or worst than 223/556 once I had the magazine issue set straight.

I have like seven now, but one rifle and one 223 upper and several more rimfire uppers and random parts and barrels. I am a .22 bore fanatic so most of my barrels are .223, but the chambers are not.:)
So technically 15%, or upwards of 60%.

Between this and another thread, I realized I need a 22/450 Bushmaster.

I would really like to see the 30 RAR get a re-release.

If I were to list the total number of complete AR rifles, pistols, SBRs, custom uppers awaiting finished lowers, stripped lowers, stripped uppers, parts kits, cerakoted receiver sets, stocks, grips, handguards, folding stock adapters, in calibers ranging from .22LR to .50 cal in large and small frame varieties, rear charging, side charging, fixed gas, adjustable gas, no gas, single stage, two stage, drop in and enhanced trigger sets, I would not be surprised to get a pre-emptive knock on my door from the Brandonberg Group. All because I choose to be a dedicated enthusiast.

So I will just say, I've got more than one and less than I plan to have this time next week.

All of mine are in .223/5.56.
I had thought to get an AR in a larger caliber but decided not to.
If I wanted to fire some other caliber then I would get a weapon that was actually designed to fire that other caliber.
You mean like the .450 Bushmaster, for example? Or .300 BLK? .22 Nosler? .224 Valkyrie? 6mm ARC? 6.8 SPC? .300 HAM'R? .458 SOCOM? .350 Legend? etc, etc,?
