Educate Me on Various Pistol Competition

NRA Rapid Fire is 5 rounds in 10 seconds... one handed at 25 yards.

I don't think anyone mentioned PractiScore. Most all USPSA, IDPA, Steel Challenge and ICORE matches are scheduled on the website: https://practiscore.com It's also where scores are posted for those matches. Searching can be a little kludgy until you get use to it, but it is a great resource for those matches. Glock, GSSF, does their own thing at https://gssf.pro NRA Precision Pistol (Bullseye) and Action Pistol (Bianchi) don't seem to have caught up with the rest of the world yet.

Have you thought about cowboy action shooting ??? I mean dress up like a real cowboy and shoot real guns: every boys dream . I know it was mine. I have never shot in one but have friend that do, so when my high power match was over I would go to the cowboy stuff to "visit". Those people just has too much fun.

It is, I was in CAS for several years. But it is not cheap, you need two revolvers, a lever action and a shotgun. Plus period style clothes.

Well he does not have to have the whole kit and caboodle to start! A revolver and costume to start and build up from there. It not about competing at first and who cares about the score! It about having fun that will keep his interest and he may decide to acquire more gear if he in interested or maybe not. With the groups I have seen it would not surprise me if there are some that will let him shoot their rigs. Start small and build up the gear if it keeps his interest. Again it is about playing cowboy and shooting a real gun. More playing than just about any other competition!

Try Olympic Rapid Fire. Five rounds in 4 seconds. On five targets. At 25 meters. I just wish there were more ranges set up for it.

The ISSF rapid fire "meatball" is 50 cm in diameter. The problem being that you really need to be putting shots into the 9 ring or better, which is about an 8-inch circle.

I would start first with location and see what’s playing close to you.

Next time any/all of them shoot go and talk to the folks. Most are nice with helpful intentions and all of them what to tell you what they chose and why.

Then you two can pick the group of gals and guys you would most like to hang out with all day, every weekend.

I’d rather shoot SASS with fellowship than USPSA with jerks, even if they dress funny

If you are any good at all your probably looking at under 3 minutes of actual shooting per match, hours of hanging out taping/painting, scoring, RO and such.

True. Skeet shooting is the only boomer era competition that appears it'll survive.

USPSA and IDPA will have to go through some pretty hardcore rule changes soon. They're getting themselves all mixed up. But they'll survive.

3 gun is back down to one division only around here. Many say it's a failure. I think it's a darn lucky one. Because that sport is better for it.

Bullseye? LOL. Toast. NRA should be giving away Lambo's at their shoots, for all that you pay those guys.

Yeah, I wish the Wednesday Night USPSA would get some beginners so I would have somebody to beat.
I can hang in the middle of the pack at IDPA.

Just a dumb question. Are there any handgun competition/sport events where a mechanical rest is used or allowed? If so, what?

Not on a broad scale that I have heard of.
I have seen pictures and brag posts about handgun benchrest but I don't know if anybody is keeping score for competition.
I remember the one setup with sandpaper on the bench and you rubbed the butt of your Contender or XP100 until it was dead on target.
