Every HUNTING cartridge is fading in popularity, because hunting has been on the decline for a couple of generations.
BINGO.. That is a fact.
Nothing to do with a popularity contest.
7mmMag for me though

Not only are they different calibers, they are different cartridges.they are different calibers for different purposes which justifys at least one of each
I just pulled the numbers and didn't break them down by hunting versus target.I'm curious how diverse the selection was. Just as an example, if most of the bullets offered were match bullets it would leave a hunter with little to choose from. I'm sure the majority are hunting style bullets, though, considering the cartridges and diameters we're discussing.
You just see a lot of used 7mags for sale. I guess everybody wants to get the new whizbang each time one comes out.BINGO.. That is a fact.

I considered getting rid of my 7 mag recently (just moved from Washington to Alabama) but decided to keep it for now. Never know what opportunities will arise in the future.

I mean, the squatches are not to be underestimated. That said, things like a growing elk population in Kentucky as well as being a bit of a traveler, Has me holding on to it.There are still a fair number of Squatch sightings in Alabama and lots in Georgia and Florida. Not as many as in Washington where you came from, but I am assuming that's why you needed the magnum there. It will still be handy where you are now, though the farther south you go the smaller the Squatches seem to be. Still, best to be overprepared; better too much gun than not enough. My question is what ammo are you using? Don't want a through and through and just p*** him off.

Yeah, the Squatches brought the elk with them when they began to migrate Southeast. They ride them, use them for food. Probably other stuff. Now the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation or whoever will try to tell you they worked with other organizations to reintroduce the elk to the Eastern part of the country. Wrong. They saw the writing on the wall and took credit for the whole thing. Sounds crazy, I know. But that's what one of the friendly green aliens told me the last time the abducted me for my monthly probing. Good hunting!I mean, the squatches are not to be underestimated. yes I like the ruger bolt action also has the best safety and easy to disengageabout as robust of a North American hunting rifle as you could hope for:

Probably has eye strain from reading all the responsesAfter 6 pages I'm curious if OP is leaning towards the 7 Mag or the 270.
I went from Illinois to Alabama myself a few years back and thought much the same thing. My experience so far has not held true though. A good number of hunters here use magnum rifles. I think it's a reflection of the popularity of hunting clubs with box blinds set up in green fields. Power line right of ways through the mountains with feeders are very common set ups too.I think Popularity of certain rounds also has a regional component to it. Your magnum calibers are going to be more popular out west where larger animals (elk for example) are more common and the ranges at which you shoot are generally longer.

Yes I could certainly see that. Plenty of massive Ag fields and powerline cuts. Not so much right around me I moved up into the mountains surrounding the Talladega National Forest on the edge of the cheeha wilderness. Most the area here is steep hills and thick forest with the exception of some hay fields and pastures.I went from Illinois to Alabama myself a few years back and thought much the same thing. that said any tips on areas in Central Alabama to start my search for hogs? They are very sparse up around me ( thank goodness) so I’m going to have to go find them. Have ammo, will travel.
Im leaning towards the 7mm now, in case I ever hunt somewhere with bigger game, I'll be very used to my rifle. Although, im starting to think about getting a fierce twisted rage, instead of an xbolt, not sure yet. After 6 pages I'm curious if OP is leaning towards the 7 Mag or the 270.
Dayammm Flintstone. Aren't you even keeping up??? It's a compilation of the newest coolest words to name a firearm. I heard you can't even shoot one unless you have a big flat brim cap on. A sleeve tattoo may also be required, but that part might just be a rumor....What is a "fierce twisted rage'? Not sure what that is. Thanks.
I had to look online to see there stuff ....What is a "fierce twisted rage'? Not sure what that is. Thanks.
