Using 444 Marlin brass for 410 shotguns

Greetings all. Suffering 410 ammo sticker shock I decided to go to reloading brass for my 410 single. Given the dirth of 410 brass I went to 444 Marlin which does chamber well in my break action. My question to those on the forum that load 444 Marlin for their 410 shotguns, do you use large rifle/large pistol primers or do you modify the 444 Marlin brass to accept the 209 primers. Trying to decide which way to go.
 
If the firing pin will reach/fire pistol primers, I'd just use those.
Why not just use the primers the brass was designed for?

Pistol primers are quite attuned to low pressure loads like those of shotguns.
But if the OP has more RPs than PPs, go ahead and use those.

I use LR primers in mine. You also want to make sure your shotgun will eject them as well, some don't because the lip is too small. I also use 45 cal nitro card wads and fiber wads from Balistic Products. Then I seal the overahot card with hot glue. I have migrated to the Magtech brass 410 hulls and they use large pistol primers. I also honed out a 444 marlin sizing die to size the brass hulls to the Magtech factory dimentions.

Count your blessings. I'd love to have 410 ammo sticker shock. There is no 410 ammo anywhere in my state. Not my city. My state. (AK) People post all over FB looking for it. Friend of mine gave me an old Stevens 410 pump. Figured I'd try it for grouse. I think, instead, I'll hang it over my fireplace.

Well. Now I know what MEC stands for.

Truthfully, I've never been a fan of 410. It was always more expensive than 20 ga, and I seem to recall the recoil not being much different. (Although, when my son was 10, he didn't much like the 20 ga recoil)

If I weren't given a gun, I wouldn't be looking for any.

But to get back to topic, a friend of mine routinely used 444 brass for his 410 hulls. I don't believe he ever modified the brass. Seems like a lot of work for little to no gain to me. He did mention that the brass seemed to last forever. Sealed the ends with hot wax over the wadding.
 
I’m sticker shock from all shotgun shells. I kindda knew something was up when Walmart was selling there value packs for $45

Good to know my .444 can be converted into 410!

OP, how much is 410 shells going for? might be worth it to buy just for the hulls

That was about what 25 brass hulls were going for about 4 years ago. I use my brass hulls for loading buckshot so far. I use the STS hulls for loading regular hunting rounds. 410 was always cheaper to make than buy. The reason 12 GA was less costly was because of the volume at which it was produced. 410 was almost a specialty round.

As FROGO207 said and if I remember correctly, I use Magtech .410 brass hulls and resize with a 444 Marlin die. My 444 Marlin die has not been honed but it seems my loads did not need much sizing.

Unfotunately, I bought all my stuff six or seven yesrs ago when inventories were flush.

I used the loads in my Mossberg 500 single loaded, my Bond arms .410/45Colt derringer, and a round or two in my .410 Browning Cynergy.

I still have a stash of empty .410 hulls from my competive skeet days and my shooting of .410 has been drastcslly reduce such that the current supply chain issues are not affecting me.

I've been using 444 and blown out 39-40 and 303 brass for .410 for years. I've also cut 30-40 to cylinder length to use in my Super Blackhawk with shot. All need fireformed.
