Your Favorite Rifle

Really have to break it down into "favorite rifle for:"

Right now for "eastern KS whitetails out of blinds and stands" it's this Rem M7 in .260 Rem:

It shot OK while doing barrel break-in:

I missed my tgt weight by a few ounces, but it's still at 7lbs 7.8 ounces "all up" including 4rds and sling. I purposely went with the heavier profiled barrel to be able to practice longer strings.

Previously this rifle with the sporter M7 barrel and HS Precision stock weighed in at 7.9lbs "all up" and I wanted a similar weight. The weight I saved with the carbon fiber stock I put into the barrel profile. The factory barrel would open up when hot (not a problem hunting) and fouled pretty badly also not big deal, but I like to practice and cleaning it just sucked.

Details:

"Trued" Rem M7 action with Timney trigger
Pac Nor stainless super-match barrel in .260 Rem; 20" 1:8 twist, 3 groove, Bartlein 2B profile, fluted. Gives 2930 FPS with Nolser 120 BTs over H4350
Bolt fluted and handle skeletonized (cosmetic, but IMHO looks cool)
Manners MCS-EH8 carbon fiber stock in elite clear web (22 Ounces)
Talley LW 1 piece rings
Leupold VX3 HD 2.5-8x36 with CDS.
Graphite Black Cerekote

I'm working on the same treatment on another M7 in .350RM, so that will be my "favorite for doing something else", maybe "eastern KS whitetails that I want to make more deader quicker".

PTR-91, nib last March. Except for mistakenly Leaning/ Resting it on the magazine (just one rd.),
It is 100 percent reliable.

I have an very early PTR with the A prefix heavy narrel and no flash hider that I need to shoot some more... I always liked the HK and was a pistol guy in my early 20's when they were only 460.00 in the stores. I wish I would have grabbed one of those and a 94 ? 9mm back then

My Rem 510 if I had a quarter for every 22 I put through it including my 5 sons training them to shoot with it I would never run out of money for ammo ever.

In stark contrast to your interests, the combination of my Maadi AKM (etc), VZ-58 and especially this pair of PTR-91s has kept my handguns from really “growing” on me.

A primary factor was storing lots of reserve 7.62x39 ammo years ago.
Never had an “ammo panic” here. Instead, initiative,

My favorite is my Sako L691 in 300 Wby. It has a butter smooth action and on a bad day will put three rounds in .75 inch at 100 yards. The only downside is that it is heavy and it kicks like a mule.

H&R Classic Carbine in .45 Colt. Picked it up from another THR member years ago. Added a Williams rear sight and Skinner front site. Pleasure to shoot. It’s the one my kids always want to shoot.

@Tallinar , Let me know, if you ever need to sell it. I have enough .45 Colt hunting ammunition for a few lifetimes...

I have many but I suppose my very favorite is my 30-06 rolling block that I made from a block of 4140. I made it because too many people told me that a rolling block was a strong action, but not strong enough to handle a high pressure round like a 30-06. It took me seven years to fabricate, an hour here and there after work . I made everything but the barrel, springs, screws and the rear sight. Barrel is from Brownell's, 27" long, 1-10 twist. All springs are coil. In addition to being made from superior steel compared to the originals, every part has been up scaled in size and thickness. The breech block and hammer are only as wide as necessary this allows for shorter action pins ( stiffer ) that are 9/16" . The originals were 7/16". The side walls of the action are thicker than the originals. Everything was professionally heat treated to RC 40. There is a penalty for all that beef; the gun weighs 10 1/.2 pounds. it has a mild recoil for an 06, no surprise there, with that much weight. I rust blued it at home.

The gun ate a German proof round that came in at around 85,000 PSI, if my math was correct. ( Had to convert kilograms per square centimeter to PSI ) I fired the proof round ( remotely ) followed by 10 180 gr. factory rounds. The headspace was unchanged. The empties fall out of the chamber of their own weight. Expansion is less that .001 a quarter inch ahead of the rim. The empties can be full length re-sized with my little finger. So much for "spring" and "stretch" in a rolling block action. Might happen in the originals, not in mine.

I haven't done much range testing, as I can hardly stand up on some days. Back is a train wreck. With the limited shooting I have done it seems to be quite accurate. I can hit a 6 1/2 ounce cat food can at around 75 yards with nearly every shot.

A couple of years back when the Arsenal museum was still open, the Remington Historical Society paid us a visit. Roy Marcot, authority on old west firearms and noted author was with them. He liked my gun. I considered that high praise!

Sorry about the upside down and sideways pic. Puter is drunk again.
