Have any of you come across 9mm brass with primer crimps? My brother in law wants to start reloading, but is convinced he needs to swage his 9mm primer pockets.

I've personally never even seen 9mm brass that had a primer crimp. And I have loaded range brass for years.

What's been your experience?

There are some cases out there with crimped primer pockets. Some I have ran into are the Win Non-Toxic (NT), some WMA (military contract Winchester IIRC) and there may be one or two others. The military WCC and FC I've encountered has not been crimped.
With the abundance of 9MM in my parts there is no need to spend any time swaging the primer pockets. Now, 223, 308, 300 Blackout and others, yes I swage them (actually cut them).

Yes, I have been running into a lot more lately, the WIN NT brass is what I have been seeing

Yes they exist crimped pockets, I have noticed brass coated steel case like sig 9mm brass is yellow like brass but it's magnetic,

Yep, they exist. I just use a plain countersink. I've cut out a few thousand primer crimps from several different calibers incuding some 9x19. FWIW cutting/chamfering primer pocket mouths also cured startling primer pops whe priming 44 Magnuums on Lee Loaders...

It definitely makes sense to swage it when there's a crimp in place. Which technique to use would seem to be the question. That, or don't collect crimped primer cases for reloading.

If you pick up enough range brass, you’ll find them. It’s one reason I went with the RL1100 that has a built in swage station. I will say though, when I was using the LNL for 9mm, it would prime a case even if it was previously crimped. Good luck.

I put my countersink in my drill press on a slow speed and get them done. Really speeds things up and a lot easier on the hands than using the hand operated countersink that the reloading companies sell.

A lot of the Nato rounds in 9mm I pick up have crimped primer pockets, the white box Winchester WCC and others the other members already mentioned.

Like the others have said, lots of 9mm brass has crimped primers. All of the military brass that I have seen does.

If there is a "NATO circle" on the case head, more than likely to have crimped primer pockets...

I load very little Hornaday cases, but 308 is crimped in the brass I have processed. I am curious if they crimp everything.

I have ran into some , not many, in LOTS of mixed range brass.

I agree, I have to deal with it in .223/5.56 but not worth my time in 9mm, they go into the brass recycle can.

I set my crimped pocket 9mm brass to the side when sizing/depriming, you can feel a difference. I'll hit it with a chamfer tool quick, there's not really a lot to remove, especially compared to crimped 5.56 brass. I'd bet ~90% of the 9mm range brass I pick up is not crimped, and most of the crimped stuff I have picked up is WMA brass.
