Most home owners insurance companies lump our guns into a "sporting goods" grouping, and the limit on that is generally sub $3,000. Just think how many basket balls that is, but when it comes to guns, that can be hit easy in one item.

It can really help you out if something horrid happens where you store your guns. Even in a "fire proof" safe they can get hot enough inside to melt metals, I have seen everything on an AR melt but the barrel and bolt....interesting stuff.

The insurance I have they want just what it is and what value YOU assign to it. You then pay them your money. They have never wanted photos, SN#, or anything along those lines. Never wanted a copy of my FFL, just info like 10-22 valued at forty five cents. This is it.

It is not too out of line, and is offered by my normal home owners insurance. Back when I had a bunch of classic cars it varied, sometimes they wanted photos, other times they send someone out, and others just took my word for it. For what it is worth my normal auto insurance covered the classic cars as well. And it was the same thing, I value this car for this much. I think they know when something is sideways, so if you say your Triumph GT6 is worth seven million they will think you are an idiot....but put it at fifteen thousand sure, they will wright that.

I would bet if you said that 10-22 is worth $3000 they are going to have questions and what to know just where all that money went.

here we go:

did they ask how many guns you have?

Types of guns, and I wonder if this is state to state?

How did you start the conversation with the agent?

What was the cost per $1,000 in value?

Yeah i called Erie to up my contents coverage. My agent asked why. I told him my gun collection grew. I found out then. Guns are insured up to 3k. He said i need a gun policy. My one car is almost paid off. So i'll be able to drop the collision. And then i'll do my guns. He wants S/N'S and value for each one. That will be a project. Im not sure how to figure value on ones that are no longer in production.

Current version of S.P Fjestad Blue Book on Gun Values is a good place to start for figuring values.

Sportsmans usually has it in stock.

My insurance policy is not having many guns.

My homeowners covers up to $5000 which is more than enough for my current total value. Add the NRA insurance and there is probably a few others.

Extra insurance and huge collections combined with security systems and extra security measures can be extreme false economy at its worst for many gun owners.

Carefully figure out your priorities and choose wisely.

My homeowner’s policy needed a rider added for jewelry and guns. They asked the approximate value of all my guns. They added it for maybe $50 a year.

You’re right though, it’s something to think about before getting surprised.
who insures you?

I’m not giving my s/n to a random agent! with possable political agendas

This is something I've been looking at as well. Even with the extra firearms rider on my renter's insurance, I'm over the dollar value for firearms, which was only about $10,000 total. I don't even own all that many guns. It's just not hard to get over $10,000 in replacement value these days.

Had our detached shop burn down in 2015. The 10 aluminum wheels in there were puddles on the floor. The table saw steel tables drooped multiple inches. The aluminum intake and steel valve covers on my bronco melted completely away. My 1990 ford pedal tractor melted into a puddle. Both of my football sized chunks of VOLCANIC glass melted. 2000° will do some interesting things.

I did not insure all, off the top of my head they will only do guns valued at over $2,500. If you have a collection of guns, like say the Auto 5, I have several. You "lump" those together as a single stated value. The thought being what I think is along the line of the insurance I had on my race car. It was covered everywhere but the race track. If I am sitting on the false grid and a meteor hits the car it is covered, towing covered, shop covered. For the list of Auto 5 they are covered as a group, so if something happened to all they are covered, but if I was on a hunt or out at a match with just one, that would be covered under normal home owners.

I don't know if it is a state to state thing, I am in MO.

My agent I have known for years, so that was not a big deal.

Im a little apprehensive about giving my agent S/N'S too. Fire is my concern, Theft wise i have a pretty secure lock down. These old frame houses go up quick.

Read your homeowners policy. Many include firearms as personal property for loss due to fire. The reduced limit is only for loss due to theft.

Quick is good because safes are generally only rated for 30 to 60 minutes.

My fire was a stick framed metal building with drop tile ceiling. It held the heat in something fierce. It burned from 10pm to about 3am when the firemen left. Was still smoldering the next morning.

There are 3 fullsize trucks hiding in there...

Wow Bigblue seeing that brings a tear to the eye. My house has asbestos siding. With tar paper under it. It holds the heat in. On the plus side it's good insulation.
I wont go into the 250k worth of stuff that was inside because they are just possessions and no one was hurt. But the hassle of rebuying everything was rough! Do you know what is in every drawer of every toolbox and cabinet? Let alone a 40x72 building lol! I still find things that i forgot to buy.

This is where taking pictures of every drawer, gun, ammo stash, etc can help tremendously.
