I always expect the best of people and am rarely disappointed. :)
I think most new reloaders need mentoring but make the mistake of settling for online sources. Anonymity is so much safer emotionally and easier than first person contact. At least they’re making an effort and really that’s all that can be expected. Hope for more; accept what comes.

I’m no fan of anonymity in firearm related stuff but I’m with you 100% on mentoring.

But for the couple of guys at the gun show when I started, no way would I know what to do nor how to start and what to start with. And to buy A LOT of components cause you’ll need them. They took a personal interest and didn’t lead me astray.

Back a few months before the troubles I searched for AR Comp without success. Dec. 2020 I believe. That was the powder I had done a lot of .223 load development with and I was in the groove with it. None to be had anywhere so I bought 748. I haven't used it yet but at least I have powder when I run out of AR Comp. That will be any day now. I wouldn't like to be looking for powder right now or paying the prices if I found it. I remember thinking that we were about to hit powder/primer wall again at that time and bought a total of 20 lbs of 2400, 748 and American Select. Glad I did.

Good luck with Blue Dot in 9mm. It works but its kinda blasty and dirty. Works best at higher pressure so be patient with starting loads that look like they have more unburnt powder than the original charge. I have seen it online but it goes quick. Haven’t seen it locally yet.
 
A very unscientific survey of Midway, MidSouth, Brownells, Powder Valley, Everglades, and Natchez seems to indicate Alliant produces powders in batches or runs of specific powders, ships them out, and then moves on to the next specific powder.

I’ve noticed for some time that these retailers will have the same one or two powders available all at the same time. Then, it’ll be a couple others and so on. All I look for are pistol powders.

For example BE-86 is currently available at Midsouth, Brownells, and Powder Valley. Last week I believe a couple others also had BE-86. Only one has Bullseye.

Of course I could also be imagining the whole thing. And why do I keep repeating myself?

My Nephew-in-law was going to start reloading last year. I found him a nice used single stage press, and he found everything else, including an 8# jug of CFE Pistol. He didn't buy it because he was looking ahead, he bought it because it was cheaper per pound than a 1# bottle.

He never started and I bought everything from him about a month ago.

I never understood the devotion or brand loyalty to a specific powder?
There are so many brands and powders that are similar if not for all practical use the same

Just move on and buy another powder Especially for Unique and who actually looks for Blue Dot?? (Flaming dirt!)

And don't whine about having to work up new load development. It's not that hard. Unless you a super secret bench rest load.:)

Didn't we used to have a member here from "Team Alliant"??

I thought the same thing about BlueDot... that would most likely be the last, last, last powder I ever went looking for. I love Unique (whooda thunk?) but I'll readily admit there are substitutes.

I don't get all the Alliant hate... it's not like Alliant is out of the powder business. Production certainly continues, at whatever volume... it's obvious Alliant has a customer for their powder. It's America and the free market. Without actually seeing Alliant's numbers, and who they are shipping their product to, no one has any idea. These days, you get what you get, and don't throw a fit.
 
I haven’t tried the H110/W296 powders for 357 Magnum but they’d have to do really well to equal 2400 in my Blackhawk. I started reloading during the Covid, so that’s the only Alliant powder I’ve found in-store I knew I could use.
 
For a long time Alliant (Hercules) powders were all I used... until the LGS handed me a can of IMR4895 for my M1 Garand, then I started looking at other brands.

FWIW, I prefer W296/H110 over 2400 in my full-house Magnum handloads, but that is not to say 2400 (or it's partner in crime, IMR4227....) aren't useful. I never could get the accuracy with 2400 that I could with W296, or for that matter, IMR4227... but W296 needs Magnum primers, and there is no load reduction, so there is always a trade-off.
 
To be fair I started with 2400 before reloading 357 Magnum. I initially got it to shoot cast bullets from my 30-30. It was the only commonly listed powder for cast I could find. Turns out it works so well for 357 Magnum and so poorly for 30-30 cast I just switched them out.

Most preference in powders is anecdotal or some nonsense like "clean burning"
Some folks seem to stall out or panic if they can't get there "preferred" powder There are no real magic formulas between companies. The technology is the same for all of them. Varget seems to have the biggest fan base, like it's something no other powder will do or something. But whatever, everyone is free to use what they want or can find

I don’t think any of it is a big deal one way or the other except for clean brass—western civilization depends on it!

Oh yeah—I have never owned a ford of any type and never will. Ever!
 
Alliant makes a good product. All of the Alliant powders are very consistent lot-to-lot and across the brand. I have Unique from the late 90’s and from early 2019, and they are the same VMD, look the same and burn the same as far as my limited observations can judge. Can’t say that for Accurate, Ramshot or all of the Hodgdon powders (most but not all). I can say it for IMR powders; even though they have changed factories and country of origin, their QC is good enough to keep their lines consistent. Thing is, I have and use all the above, do have preferences but don’t let those preferences stop me from trying something different. Then again, I also really enjoy load development.
 
My LGS has had a half dozen containers of Unique in the display case for several months now. I figure at some point they will decide that it's just not going to sell at $50 per.

2400 in my black hawk, I second that.
Doesn't stop me from trying to use up the last quarter inch in a few other 1 pound jugs of various powders though.
