How to purchase CMP M1 Garand or M1 Carbine?

I just recently bought a CMP M1911A1. Honestly wasn't familiar with the CMP until I read about it on a gun forum and figured it was a good way to get a piece of nostalgia for me. The process of buying was wait for them to call after receiving my RGN or choose the CMP auction option.

Maybe a little bug has bit me, but I'm reading about people buying M1 Garands and Carbines. It appears the only way to buy those from the CMP is via auction. Is that the case? Or is there a way to buy one direct, either by an RGN, or just put in an order and wait?

Basically, what options and what is the process to buy a Garand or Carbine from the CMP not going through an auction?
 
They have no more carbines and no prospects for getting any. Garands are also in scarce supply via web purchase, although the stores still have stock. So in theory these were available for online purchase, and should sufficient stock become available, they will be again, but in practice auction is presently the only way to get them.

Right now there are some rack-grade Garands and some expert-grade (new production barrels and stocks, refinished) available.
 
If you run the gambit, there is Classic Firearms and Royal Tiger Import for your M1 Carbine needs.
Just prepare for worst for wear on the RTI.

Yep

I'd make a tour of all three (were Anniston open), but the OP is looking for practical instead of recreational advice so the closest store was suggested.

Also, there are plenty Garands at gun shows and Gun Broker that came from the CMP/DCM to qualified civilians and are being sold again (and again). I'm sure I'll see half a dozen being walked around for sale and a couple of dozen on tables.

I see on their site mostly sold out. Does, or will, the CMP, receive more rifles over time? In other words, is the CMP getting rifles transferred from the Army on a regular basis, and with patience, they will fill orders, or is the supply drying up?
 
Well, maybe should have paid more attention to the CMP a few years ago :scrutiny:. Not that that would have changed my direction at the time; limited resources on my end were what they were.

So, they are basically out, is what I'm reading? Or do they actually have more on site at their stores than they are listing for sale?
 
They received a few large shipments a couple years ago, but the guns were in rough shape because they had been sitting aboard ship for an extended period- lots of rust and rotten, worm-infested wood.
I suspect most of the new stock showing up at the stores are guns that continue to emerge from the reconditioning process of that last batch.

I picked up a field grade in the fall of 2016 for $650 and I consider it one of the better gun purchases I've made.

Dumb question that I couldn't quite figure out...

Are all Honorably Discharged Veterans (with a DD214) exempt from the affiliated organization requirement, or just folks still on Active or Reserve Duty?
 
Wasn't all that long ago when they were selling for $500ish each for a field grade and you could get 10 or so a year shipped right to your front door. Some people were buying them like no tomorrow. Surpulus 30-06 ammo was going for less then fifty cents a round too.

The opportunity was there for all but most were daunted by the relatively easy purchase process.

Military retirees are but I don't know about veterans.

It wasn't that long ago that walking into the Anniston location was just like going to a candy store, for guns, accessories and ammo. :D

I really wasn't clued in on CMP, so you could say the opportunity was there for all. But the priority wasn't. I was looking at getting set up for reloading and jumping on salad days deals for other rifles and pistols on my list. That's where my fun money went.

I wouldn't be buying to sell, but it does remind me that sometimes it takes money to make money. I stood at a Walmart ammo counter with thousands of rounds of ammo at insane clearance prices. I knew it was a no brainer, but I had to limit myself to cash on hand vs credit. Never would have predicted the panic prices soon after, but suffice it to say that would have put a bit of money in my gun slush fund.:(
I stood in front of 1,000's of primers at Scheels at $40 or so per 1,000. Heard rumblings of shortages. Nope didn't buy those either. Wanted to - but didn't.:cuss:

But my girls got all the gymnastics classes they wanted and trips to Disney World, Rushmore, Yellowstone and others. Some might question my priorities, especially with Disney on the list o_O, but I'm not second guessing those choices. I am, however, second guessing my gun purchase priorities of the past given the CMP deals, which are finite, and the deals on newly manufactured guns which they can just make more and are not finite. You can't remanufacture history, which is my current appeal of the CMP. It might be a rabbit hole I don't want to go down. I've always looked at most of my guns as tools for a purpose. Then I bought a CMP M1911A1:uhoh:.

What if is Springfield Armory serial number 1,000,000? (I don’t know anything about what is collectable;I looked this up at Rock Island Auction) With my firearm investment history and luck, I would see it and give it a hard pass.

I'm not sure what collectors values are on Garands because I shoot, I don't collect. I do know that you can get a rack grade from the CMP for $650 shipped, so don't pay Jimbob Jr. at the gun show five times as much for one in similar shape.

If I read their website correctly, veterans are exempt from their marksmanship requirement. You'd have to call them to ask about the affiliated organization requirement, but there are definitely ways to do it other than gun club membership.
