I recently discovered some brass that stuck to my magnet during the wet tumble process when I was cleaning up some range brass. Upon closer inspection I realized that it was brass plated steel cases. I looked at the headstamp and found out that they were all Sig casings. The plating came right off during the tumble process. I had a look at Sig's website and there is no mention of these types of cases. Just wanted to give everyone a heads up if you are collecting range brass. Make sure you run a magnet over it before processing.

Federal did this what 5 or 6 years ago with shot shells. When they changed thr gold medal "maroon" colored hull to the white gold medal grands. The new hull were steel bases that were brass washed, They still considered them premium shells too.

yep been seeing magnetic sig brass for a bit now , also a good bunch of nickel plated is magnetic now, even found some nickel 9mm that was magnetic and berdan primed

If it sticks to a magnet it is a steel case, PERIOD.

TOSS IT IN THE GARBAGE CAN!
Steel recycles too. It just isn't worth as much.

I take all the steel clips from rendering wheel weights, and any small steel, down to the recycle center when I turn in aluminum, brass, copper, stainless steel. Even old computer chips are worth something.

It doesn't pay to take 40 pounds of steel down, but if it fits on the trailer (or in the bed of the pickup) when I am going there anyway, well it may help with fuel money.

A few weeks ago at the shooting pit I take my grandson shooting I always pick up spent shotgun hulls, steel rifle &pistol cases and the brass other guys leave there I picked up some 9mm cases that was coated with copper.
They were actually copper coated steel cases.

I'll take a picture later and add it to this post.

The shotgun hulls go into the garbage.
The steel rifle and pistol cases go to the county trash transfer station where they have a steel recycle bin.
The brass cases I sort, wet tumble and either keep it or sell it to fund other stuff.
The trash brass case goes into my trash brass bucket to sell to the metal recycle yard.
Last time there he was paying $1.50 a pound for brass cases.
Aluminum cans he was paying 25 cents a pound.
I also save all of the spent primers, he pays the same price for them as for the brass cases.

I have had steel case slip go the old Dillon 650 XL. They load just fine and shoot just fine too. I have done it enough to know it can work. Not as good as brass but not particularly dangerous either... A magnet, as others have shown, makes short work of this issue.

I run across quite a bit of brass coated and a little copper coated steel cases at my range and it isn't just 9mm when the brass snipes haven't been there for a few hours. I try to go EARLY in the morning and there is almost always one or two there with their little buckets, flashlights, and pickup tools when I arrive. No shooting, just brass collecting.

Should be a war crime
Not hardly. These companies that make steel or aluminum shells have no obligation to make them out of brass. They DO have an obligation to make a profit for their shareholders.
They use less expensive materials to achieve this goal.
We, on the other hand, have the right to choose to do business with them or not. I vote with my dollars. I don't buy ammunition made of aluminum or steel, and when I do manage to pick some up from the ground, it doesn't stay in my possession for very long.

Does Sig actually make their brass/ammo or contract it out? I know Herters is just contracted S&B and Browning .223 is/was Lake City brass.

SIG seems to be producing a variety and presumably high quantity of ammunition now ... +p+ 9mm and 3 piece brass with the 277... strange new stuff

My fist experience with Sig ammo was a couple years back when I got a couple 300blk guns. Several out of every 20 in the box split the necks, this was out of both guns. That told me everything I ever needed to know about Sig ammo.
