I like HP38/W231 for .45.
4.7-5gr with a 230, or 5gr with a 200.
With a 230 4.7 was softer but 5 seemed a hair more accurate.

I see a few Clays supporters. I think they are correct about the metering and how clean it is BUT, up near the top end of its range it can spike pressures and just a little over with your powder throw makes me cautious. That's the reason I don't use it, especially in such a large case like the 45 Auto. 4gr of Clays doesn't fill much of the case at all. (or most any other cases)

Again, just my observation and opinion on that powder in the 45 ACP.

LOL...in years gone by we used Unique. Then moved to Bullseye. When I ran out of that I went to Titegroup. When I ran out of that I got 2-8Lb containers of W231. Happy with all four. My comp friends alway used Bullseye when they used to compete. I never got as good as them.

PistolTwo, what is the intended use for the ammo?

What I would do for self defensive is different than target.

Hard to go wrong with BE. I'm one of the few that seem to do better with WST than W231.

Clays for Missouri Bullet SWC.
W-231 for general use for jacketed bullets.
WSF for 185 gr XTP self defense rounds

ByTheWay. I'm getting 800 fps from a Kimber UCC II 3" barrel with 7.7 gr of WSF under a 185 grain XTP.

Update if your interested,
I went with 5.8gr w231 and put 4 through the chrono.
794fps
805fps
797fps
784fps
AV-795
They seemed to be very accurate, while shooting through the chrono I hit the same spot in the drit hill @25yrs away. Definitely not on paper however. Also the recoil was very mild. I included a pic to show the burnt powder on the brass. It looks pretty clean to me.
So now I can't make up my mind if I should just be happy and go with it or try and get them up around 900fps.

The difference in energy would be 800fps = 263 foot pounds vs 900fps = 333 fp.

*I started out looking for a hard hitting fast 45acp to carry.

Side note..... After shooting chrono this morning walking the 30yrds back to my shop a gopher was pushing up dirt by the door so I racked in a mag with 230 fmj and blasted that bugger through the dirt. Haha he had been making a mess of the yard..... No worries no more.

Sorry about the pic upload couldn't get the upload right on my phone
$15.59 a pound? how old is that can?

I'll go along with the majority and say Bullseye. It's been one of my favorites for nearly 50 years and has never let me down. I've used it for Bullseye, for USPSA matches and Steel Challenge.

Hot loads or puff loads Bullseye has published data that will do for your choice of bullet.

Bullseye is the go to for 45acp. 230g jacketed or plated, or cast...its the best. Titegroup works well for very accurate, soft shooting rounds. For the 200 grain XTP I loaded up some with power pistol. Gets them downrange at about 950fps with very good accuracy. However, I can certainly feel the difference in recoil. Long story short, if I could only choose one powder for 45, it would be Bullseye

Hello all, I just got 300 hornady 185gr xtp bullets and was in the planning phase. I could sure use some opinions. I'm loading for a 1911 built from different parts. I got it functioning like a dream shooting 230gr jacketed round nose and SWC. I would like to develop a hot xtp round without changing my 14lb spring and run several rds through before I cerakote the gun. I have win 231 and bullseye both on hand.
Thanks for any information and or opinions,
Justin

4.8 grains of Bullseye, for everything .45ACP from 185 grain to 230 grain.
