Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

Walkalong. Do you recommend the PST Gen 2?
Yes, I have been very happy with it. It has been on a 6 Creed in a couple of PRS matches, my Dasher for a bit, and has been sitting on my NRL-22 rifle for several matches and has performed well.

I did pre-order a Tract 4-20X50 for the NRL-22 rifle, but have been, and could continue to be, very happy with the PST Gen II 5-25X50. It will come off rings and all like I have done when moving it to another rifle, and be ready for service when I need it. A known good scope I can throw on a rifle.

I got the simpler reticle of the 30MM PRS LR scope vs their 34MM 4.5-30X56 full blown ELR PRS scope. I picked it up yesterday. Still having issues getting pics from my new restricted phone. Let me get off the computer and add a couple straight from the phone.

Edit: Sigh, forgot, too big to upload.

Here are two that weren't to big to email to myself and then access on my little laptop.

I mounted the Tract this morning. I used a ladder and a plumb bob on a rope the line up the cross hairs.
I do not have a vice in the shed set up yet that can hold the rifle where I can point it at a rope to set the
scope, so I used my big portable vice with my little barrel vice. Leveled everything and bingo.

That's a beautiful rifle Walkalong.

My Bergara B14R got delivered on Thursday. Still waiting on the gun store to log it in so I can pick it up....

It was unintended, not noticed or thought about prior to, but the scope goes really nicely with the stock, just sort of happened, but yes, it looks good.

My Bergara showed up. I have a Vortex Diamondback Tactical 4-16 on it for now. Sitting in Vortex rings on a Nightforce 20MOA base. Hopefully Ill have the funds saved up after the holidays for the PST Gen II. Got sucked into buying a Ruger Wrangler over the weekend so the fund is down a couple hundred as of now. Hahaha.

When folks shoot my B-14R they are amazed how accurate it is. A buddy at work said.... This is crazy, it just goes exactly where you point it. They just aren't used to shooting a very accurate rifle.

I failed pics today, didn't take a single one. Came in 6th overall, barely out of the top 5, but was top shooter in my squad, and top old gun (only two of us), but I had a good day.

My buddy Jeff took one pic when they were taking pics afterwards, top five and top in each category.

Oh yea, the Tract came through with flying colors, love it. I can see the numbers well enough without glasses to dial elevation and get parallax set. I still use readers unless I forget them on a stage, but if I do forget them, all is not lost. Images were bright and sharp, love the simpler reticle, especially for holding under or over. Turrets are smooth, clicks are excellent, not too tight, not too loose, nicely audible, good feel. Magnification ring is very smooth, and again, not too tight or loose. I like the locking turrets, pull up or out to dial, and they can be left out/up if you want to, which is nice when dialing on a stage.

I liked my PST Gen II a lot, and still do, could be happy shooting it, but the Tract is nicer. But hey, it better be, it cost more. :)

Dude… I never know what it is, but I have taken at LEAST a pocket camera (and of course my phone), but even sometimes multiple GoPros or one of our pro DSLR’s or mirrorless cameras, but I just can’t convince myself to take the time out of spotting, policing brass, or prepping to take pictures. Always leave the house with the best intentions, and almost always come home empty handed…

Came in 6th overall

Good shooting!

Well I bit the bullet today on a B-14R also but mine is chambered in 22WMR. I've never had a 22 mag in my life but have friends that swear by them for varmint hunting and I feel like it might be a good compromise between 22LR and a centerfire for varmints in or near the barn lots. This has been a terrible year for varmints, groundhogs, coons, fox, we cant catch a break there is constantly something tearing up and messing in the feed or killing our chickens.

Well, I was saving up to put a nicer optic on the Bergara 22. But my brother in law is in need of some money and selling a bunch of guns from his ample collection. So I'll be the proud owner of a Remington 700P 223 here pretty soon. I fell in love with this rifle when he let me shoot it. Im probably going to take the Nikon FX1000 off of my BCM precision AR build and make this my main 223 precision rifle.

The 700P is a nice rifle. My first bolt gun, which I bought in the mid 90s, is a 700VS and is the sister to the P. Mine has a 1:12 twist but that was perfect when I was hunting prairie dogs.

Yours should be a 1:9 twist and will stabilize the 69 grain bullets. I've had success with Hornady 75 grain BTHP in the 1:9 SPS Tactical but I'm at a much higher altitude.

Had Fun- 12 Stage/120 Point Match
Got to walk the prize table and snagged a 35mm Leopuld Mount
going to replace the Bergara though- another day with a brass flipped around and jammed under the bolt after firing..never happens on the bench but under pressure on the clock- it's good for at least one per match.
still a blast...shame to end the season already

A question please.. why do the fellas line up all the rifles like that when they are not shooting ?

On ranges without racks, we place our rifles pointed downrange at the firing line between stage positions. Mag out, bolt back, but still pointed downrange and positioned such they can’t cover anyone.

It’s basically like perpendicular parking along a street.

Any particular order , as in top of the mountain or king of the hill ? I was at one range were some guys had their spots etc.

No. We move from one firing position (“stage”) to the next, moving the rifles along the contiguous firing line. Whoever sets their rifle wherever is where their rifle sits. Gotta remember the context - we’re walking the length of a half mile or so firing line (some longer) shooting 8-12 different positions, leap frogging rifles as each squad moves to each firing position, and over half of the ranges around the country hosting PRS matches (supposedly over 2/3) aren’t “square ranges,” they’re often just open spaces like cattle pastures, AND we’re not firing the same obstacles from month to month, so the shooting positions vary from one match to the next. Some ranges have rifle racks behind the firing line (behind the spotter alley), but the front row parking deal is a common denominator.

Here, the next stage involves starting at the bottom of the stairs then going prone on the platform, so the “safe line” was the rear of the platform.

On this elevated platform, the accepted safe line was the front edge, so we hang our muzzles over the front giving room to walk behind them, in front of the spotters.

Here you can see a rifle staged to go next on this firing stage, with the next squad’s rifles line up in the background, ready to go on the next stage. Usually for obstacles like this, we move left to right (right handed shooters), so we pick up our staged rifle at the left and deposit it back at the right when we finish the stage.

Sometimes a contiguous firing line isn’t straight. This was taken from one firing position shooting toward the north west, with the stage pictured shooting out of a truck bed on the ground to the north (left) of the Chevy in the ravine. So the safe line for that stage was technically behind the safe line for other stages around it.

At this match, a contiguous mowed path marked the safe line, along which all of the stages were arranged, so this was the view all day (although the sunrise certainly offered nicer lighting at this hour) - spotting from the back edge of the mowed path, shooting from obstacles at the front, with rifles staged between props. Sweet! Looks like a nice place.

My Bergara will leave a case in the chamber every once in a blue moon, seems to be from short stroking. Jeff shoots his in the matches, has only done it once for him as far as I remember. With the Vudoo you have to be careful not to have the bag push on the mag, it will point the round down and jam. I made a stop on the back of my plastic mag to keep it from being pushed back, angled down, works 99%, but plan on making an aluminum stop that attaches to the arca rail. Found out my first match it's a 'Vudoo thing". Sigh. :)

Lot of guys are shooting the RimX actions..Saw more RimX than VuDoos..and a lot of CZ457 actions as well. Haven't decided which way I'm going..but it will be either RimX or Vudoo currently.
Like an extended barricade stop that extends down more?
