NYC Mayor Eric Adams and Officials Urge Credit Card Companies to Create Weapon Code for Gun and Ammo

I suppose these idiots think people who want to hide weapons purchases are too stupid to use their card to take the cash from an ATM. Naturally, all the BGs are filling out 4473s, not!

One of the rationales I've heard for this proposal is that many mass shooters lawfully purchase the crime gun and ammo with a credit card, thus possibly triggering a red flag.

The counter-argument to that is what's to stop someone from taking a cash advance on a credit card(s) to avoid any such red flags for guns and ammo?

So, Jo Q. Publick goes to ABC Sporting goods and gets $1200 in Little League stuff, and a box of .22lr.
Will the store have to generate two receipts? Or will the one suffice?

Jean X. Deauxes goes to the indoor range and uses his debit card, but pushes the "credit" option instead of a PIN. Is that a "gun purchase"? Will it need the special code?

Jon NMI Smith hires a bulldozer to come grade the berms at his outdoor range. Is that a "gun purchase" needing a code?

Already happened.
When selling a crap ton of old/odd factory ammo on gun broker during the summer of "mostly peaceful but firey protests" I noticed that the first 5 UPC numbers on all the ammo I sold was the same. Shotgun, pistol, rifle, rimfire, 5.7x28 or 30-30, some of it over 20 years old, all the same 5 numbers. Different manufacturers, fed, rem, win, fiocchi, buffalo bore, estates, PMC and more? Ya, all had the same 5 numbers.
Go look.
So it would take nothing to track ammo purchases.

Gun grabbers see no difference a criminal with a gun and a law abiding citizen with a gun. The only distinction is they haven't figured out how to turn the law abiding citizens into criminals. But they're working on it.

So what? Let's not dwell on little problems but find solutions. I anyway pay a lot of things with cash and guns would then exclusively be paid with cash or certified funds. A minor inconvenience, at best.

It's already happening.

And it's worse than just guns. Oil, and other industries are being blackballed by liberal banks. Banks that the left will just bail out, when people leave them.

My card gets hacked after every major firearms purchase. Switching banks right now.

As far as they're concerned, they already are.

On the contrary.
The anti-gunners are busily trying to decriminalize the criminal possession and use of firearms.
It's the law-abiding gun owners that they want to crush... .

The primary reason for wanting the segregated product coding is to pressure the banks to restrict the activity. Some of the major payment processors already restrict their usage for items determined to be gun related (think PayPal). Credit and debit card agreements have language in them which give the issuing bank control over where the card can be used and types of permitted transactions. It would not be at all difficult for states like NY and CA to pass legislation forbidding state chartered banks from permitting certain categories of items. Many may do it voluntarily.

All this is going to do is slow it down a little bit temporary and drive it all much further underground and make it really impossible to track anything and I'm good with that.

All the major retailers sell a large variety of sporting goods. The merchant code would be useless for someone like cabelas or Scheels. I could be buying a bike, canoe, binoculars shoes or an evil assault rifle and the merchant category code would be the same.

What possible good will monitoring credit card activity do ?. It's not as if criminals have any unless there STOLEN already .

Another delusional band aid . Reminds me of the sign I read ;
By You having a vasectomy because your neighbor has too many kids does WHAT ? . Exactly !. You seriously need to question certain P parties scholastic records and start demanding refunds or those educational institutions CLOSED DOWN !.

So what are they going to do? Is there a limit on how many guns I can buy in day? Week? month? year? I bought multiple handguns, on many occasions. Nothing ever happened.

So are they going to kick down my door over buying 4 guns legally a month?

Or, they have to ring up any "gun stuff" on a separate receipt. Which will rely on the abilities and competencies of retail store employees--which have a wide range.

We literally do not know.
This could wind up only applying to sales in NYS.

I also think that we all know that when this fails to have the desired effect, the antis will scream for the next step, more codes, more reporting, more cracking down. Say what you will about the antis, but they're not afraid of creeping incrementalism.

But the merchant category code applies to all sales in the store. If you go to walmart and buy stuff at separate registers in electronics, guns & ammo, landscaping and the main check out every transaction will process with the same merchant code.

This will only apply to small gun shops. Any targeted action will be directed towards at your local gun stores. Stores like Bass Pro use "Sporting Goods Stores" as their MCC. You could be buying a $3000 safe at your local shop, or a vintage Python, or a pair of "assault rifles" with 1,000 rounds of ammo and the credit card processor won't ever know the difference.

This new code is useless other than possible harassment of local gun stores.

This is another of those 'designed to fail' programs that will allow the politicians and activists to push for more restrictive and onerous programs against law abiding gun owners once this program has obviously failed.

No restrictions on actual criminals, of course... .

Well, that's what the reporting is saying. At least some of it.
But, that also requires that the reporting is actually accurate. And accuracy has not been a hallmark of what we are called journalism for some time now.
What most journos know about retail transactions is arguing with the cashier at S'bux.

So, ok, maybe they go for "here, we'll stigmatize" one kind of retailer. But, if they do, then they miss huge swathes of sales. Or they generate huge piles of GIGO data. Neither of which actually advanced "their" cause, even as a "talking point."

Dunno.

I'm not relying on what is being reported... I have worked indirectly with corporate credit card processing in various capacities over the last 15 years. At a few different points I have overseen the credit card processing department for a medium sized gas station chain that ran $100 million+ monthly sales on credit cards while the manager was on maternity leave or during staffing transitions. For the last few years I have reviewed millions of dollars in transactions on a monthly basis for use tax compliance. I have helped filled out applications to setup merchant accounts for credit card processing.

Up "his" ;) as we say on AKfiles. Not gonna even think or worry about it.

I knew that he would be another chameleon using smoke and mirrors, regarding guns, crime or wot - evah.
