ATF was saying 4 million braced AR pistols.
But atf thinks it's around 40 million they can go after, but there's only been like 10 million or less AR pistols sold since the 1990s including the ones sold with the slick tube, so they must be going after krinks or AK pistols, MP5 pistols, TC contenders, 10/22 charger pistols, who knows it will take all kinds of stuff to make up that 40 million target number.
A lower with a brace that never had a barreled upper attacked is not sold as a rifle or a pistol. Palmetto State Armory (PSA) has had to sold millions of these alone not even counting all of the other manufactures (Aero Precision being another extremely popular seller). Then many people build their own ARs. I only purchased 1 complete AR which is a BCM and two PSA kits. All of my several other ARs I built myself just like many others have.

Then there's the fact that it's not just ARs that use braces. MP5 variants, G2 variants, CZ Brens, AK Pistols, CZ Scorpions, shotguns, and a plethora of other platforms also sell pistol versions of their rifles and shotguns.

There are far more than 4 million out there, and the ATF is purposely and conveniently undercounting.

You left out "install that illegal suppresor on my illegal pistol and let them screw around and find out". If they want to turn law abiding citizens into criminals overnight then it's time to act like criminals.
Just like those involved in the Boston Tea Party and Jan 6th.

Right on!
Just make sure to leave a link so we can donate to your legal defense fund when they check you into the graybar hotel.

I am worry that they might "stand firm" and declare that the lower for any gun with a non compliant configuration was defacto a rifle needing a stamp and that removing the brace is not a legal resolution. If so, I can "fix" my situation by getting new lowers for anything we want to assemble into a pistol configuration. For guns other than ARs, such a solution may not be practical at all

See the following thread, post #11 which gives you the options on what to do with a braced pistol.

ATF cannot process the Form 4 fast enough as it is. There is a huge back log still from when efiling wasn't possible. Currently waiting times for paper forms are 12 months, for efiling it's 100 days. Form 1 is three months for paper and two months for efiling.

Can you imagine the work load that the ATF, the federal agency with the lowest budget, is facing?

Saw last night on Guns & Gadgets that there is currently a bill pending in Congress to hugely increase ATF's budget, very interesting information also about how they intend to use it, and they are now claiming 40 million braced pistols are in use. (Gee, wouldn't that make them "firearms in common use"... just sayin'...)

Then the ATF would be like, "no the threshold for common use is 41 million".

Here's what the lawyers think.
If I lived in Washington state I would definitely have these guys on retainer.

100%! WA here, it’s really smoky from the fires

Personally I don't think this will be like the "machine gun" deal of way back..
That was an actual Amnesty, a "No questions asked, just give us the $200, and it's on the registry" evolution Weapins with defaced s/n, stolen gov't property, all were fair game, and no questions asked.

This present, presumed, "amnesty" just means--so far--a "we're are defering enforcing the new rule for two months, while we figure out what the new rule actually is.

Also, our only documentation on this is an administrative request for permission on modifying what media go in the filing cabinets. All off an internal memo from BAFTE to DoJ.

So, none of this is in actual black-and-white. In the vernacular, we are huffing & puffing over "vaporware."

If the ATF does follow through with declaring pistol braces SBR's and allows brace owners to register their braces as an SBR for $0 I am going to put a brace on every pistol that will take one and register them as an SBR while I can do so without paying a $200 stamp.

There was NO 200 dollar tax on the '68 amnesty..........none, zero, zilch! I know, I papered an MP40, a close friend did an M/2 carbine.............As I recall we submitted the forms in November of '68 and had them returned during the following March.................No tax stamps were attached as no stamps were required............Had a crisp 100 bucks in that minty 40......sold the thing around 2007 for 8 grand.....wish I'd kept it!

Far as the stocked AR issue goes, I'd paper the damn thing if I owned one. Truly I would not fear any action from, the idiots in ATF............anyway at my age I'd likely be departed from this vale of tears (BS!} before they got around to me and even if not I'd sure have a lot of good company..........you fella's worry to excess!!!

If you can pass a NICS check to buy a firearm, is it a given that if you submit the forms, fingerprints and pay the tax, you will get the go ahead and be able to register an SBR? Asking for a friend who has a couple DUI's from his young and dumb days.....

If the gun is going to be a SBR going forward is there something to prevent you from just throwing an actual stock on the gun and having an actual SBR?

As to the original poll - What is the ATF form and Worksheet?

That is what I was thinking. Does a SBR tax tag specify a particular stock or can you interchange stocks once you have the tax stamp? Hence, if a brace has a free registration period then register a brace and put a decent foldable stock on it? I would imaging the tax stamp would specify the serial number of the receiver... not the stock?

The only problem I have is that I don't own any "hand guns" that are amenable to being converted to an SBR... well, except my C96 "Broom Handle" mauser but I think the stock on those are ushered in under C&R rules... at least an original stock.

What is the ATF form and Worksheet?
ATF Form 1 is titled "Application to Make and Register a Firearm" and is to request approval to make a NFA firearm.
The Worksheet is 13 pages of fun for figuring out whether your current braced pistol has to become something else if you want to use it.

I think that’s the big question. I’d be happy to buy a braced pistol now to register it later and save on the $200 stamp, because I would love a real SBR. But it’s still an open question whether this will be allowed, given they require a photo of the weapon-to-be-amnesty’s.

The worksheet in question is the ATF Worksheet 4999. Myself and others have posted the link to the worksheet several times in different threads in the General and Legal sections of the forum.

Here is the link again. https://www.atf.gov/file/154866/download

And here is a link for the ATF Form 1 for making/registering a NFA firearm. https://www.atf.gov/firearms/docs/form/form-1-application-make-and-register-firearm-atf-form-53201

I know, but that word "amnesty" is getting used a great deal. Like many words used now so many don't know the meaning.

I agree I doubt there will be a you get to keep what you have all the way around no questions asked, we will stick a number on the side of it and you are good no matter what.

Forgotten weapons did a very good video years ago about it and featured a defaced stolen M16. It was a good video....

Oh heck I am bored and would like to see it again anyway.

1968 government vs. 2022 government

“Government” is the key word here
