Lever action hunters sling or no sling?

One thing I didn’t see mentioned is a shotgun sling. There are some that use essentially a choker to hold it to the forend. The rifle my grandpa had (Glenfield 30) had a modified shotgun sling on it, with chokers at both ends. My uncle made it in shop class. There should be more of that style sling. They work well and detach easily so it would be easy to pull it and pack it until you need it then deploy it and use it as you see fit. With a foot of 1 inch sapling that sling has made for a dandy drag rope too.

I have a sling on my Marlin 1895. Usually only gets used in the morning when I'm walking to my spot or evening when I'm walking back to the truck. It's in my hands anytime I'm moving during legal shooting hours!

I have a sling on all of my rifles. Proper use of a sling vastly improves a human's ability to steady their rifle.

Having said the above, often while hunting, it is the hunter who is surprised. If one must take an immediate shot and the game is close in, then one has NO time to wrap their supporting arm in the rifle's sling. You have to just take your shot and right now.

I had a beat up 444 that I didn't mind drilling into, so I put a Ching sling on it. It worked the way it was supposed to - I still think the Ching sling is a great device for practical riflery - but honestly I was a little offended by the appearance. If I was serious about lever rifles I might consider something like a "tactical" 1895 - the guns in stainless and black laminate - with a Ching.

I'm addicted to readily adjustable rifle slings.

all my rifles have slings on them that I make. For rifles like hunting or something I want full movement with I make a version of the Z Aim Rifle sling(wider straps for more stability and comfort). Once on I can literally run, climb...whatever is necessary as the rifle is centered on the Back (my version is) and completly stable.

this video shows the idea behind the sling. Its not hard to make one if you are handy.

The only hunting rifle I own that doesn't have a sling is my Model 94 30-30. But I've been hunting with it for almost 40yrs now and it is the shortest overall length of all my hunting rifles.

I have had slings on all of my hunting rifles, lever action included. My Mod 94 has the Uncle Mike's swivel stud in the rear and barrel band up front. Just before I stopped hunting, I put on a Butler Creek "Comfort Stretch" sling on it. Big improvement. That 94 has seen a lot hunting miles out West.

I really liked this idea, except I would put the sling swivels on the starboard side of the rifle

Not an expert on Military sling swivels but those look like 1903 Springfield mounts. The rear one anyways. Pretty neat modification. I like seeing those old school tricks.

I like to use a sling but there's nothing saying you can't take it off and stow it if you don't immediately need it if it gets in the way.

I use slings on everything, but I also use QD swivels so I can remove them easily once I am in the stand, blind, etc. to minimize noise and movement.

Sometimes if a deer wont give you anything but a butt shot you can aim at where their head would be if they look back at you. Jiggle the sling and they usually look back.

Simple little neoprene sleeve that slides over the detatchable hardware on each end will get rid of that noise. I dont like those QD swivels knocking around either.

I prefer a sling. I have a couple of no-drill slings from a company called “Brass Stacker”. Outstanding craftsmanship.

For Years I carried a Marlin Model 336 in 35 Rem. in open fields and woods in the NE. Aways had a sling. Don't really remember much about the sling. They were leather back then. Couldn't buy anything else. I do remember it was comfy to carry over my shoulder. Of course, I was much younger back then.

I only use lever actions these days, and have never put slings on them. Never slung my bolt actions in years past either.
