Made a 7 mile hike today. Seems most are getting into fall and we're not quite there yet in Florida. Lots of bees and birds out and the wild flowers still blooming.

My largest handgun chambering is 9 mm.

Not today but over the past weekend I had a 50 cal Knight Muzzle Loader with me. No Deer were harmed!!!

A big Note:

my Krav Maga (hand/leg sekf-defense) instructor was walking at night, with his Mom, near a streetlight (weeks ago) in Asheville NC.

25’ Away! A Black Bear was startled, which then stood up about Seven feet tall.

Mr Kelly had been told to look away and walk away.
It worked, Bears get into peoples’ garbage.

Lucky his Mom did Not scream or “quite” panic.

He didnt have his little .40 handgun on him. He always carries when out in the Memphis (TN) area.

In addition to some time in the woods hunting and stand prep, I have still been hiking some.

I stopped to take the above picture and saw a very nice whitetail buck (140 class). I watched him swim/walk across the water.
Maybe it's time to skip a new gun and buy a nice camera (I hope the gun gods didn't hear that).


My carry choice was my 442 the Centennial (harmless j frame) fits a little more comfortably in jeans pocket.

I didn't have to go in to work at the usual hour. I went out the back door and wandered for a few hours.


It was nice to slow down for a while.

Great picture of the early morning deer.
Like the 29 also.

I recently scratched the 44mag itch with a S&W 69. Now I have this crazy 10mm itch that may need tobe scratched soon

Trying to adjust the rear sight on my Walther Model 4. Getting closer day by day but overshot the mark and now have to backtrack.

I have a model 20 that is awesome. I have a model 30, same frame size as a 29 and it is easily to conceal and accurate. You will not be disappointed with one

Not yet. I am afraid that this coming week is going to be slow. After Halloween the rut should be in full swing.

Was a nice high 70 low 80s day. Light breeze and cloudy. Hit up Green Swamp Preserve, once I got onto the trail all the wildflowers were in bloom. I must have seen millions of them on my 7 mile hike. Kinda wish I had lugged my DSLR, but I know if I go back this weekend they'll be gone. Took another route and got to walk thru some nice scrub land and wet lands, even some saw raccoons

Yesterday, I did some relic hunting on the hunting property with the old metal detector. Found a bunch of stuff, nothing valuable, but some cool old things you guys might like.

Lots of iron, nails, bolts, wire, bits of chain, and two broken horse shoe halves, and a heap of shotgun shell bases.


Only one of those shell bases dates from post WWII all the rest date from ~1915 to 1930 give or take a few years, except a Wester Cartridge Company one that dates from 1889 - 1914. In the center is also a 32 rimfire but it was too corroded to tell if its a short or long.

I did not go unarmed and its a good thing because two tactical opossums tried to put the sneak on me. The old Model 10 and my new 148gr LHP reloads made short work of them.


I am really pleased with this new load compared to shooting 158gr XTPs from this revolver. There was noticeable more damage with these bullets since they open much more reliably.

Late that afternoon I dump the metal detector in the truck and grab my deer rifle for a little scouting. While sitting on a stump enjoying the beautiful weather the armadillos attempted a revenge hit and I caught this one putting on the sneak through the leaves at about 60 yards. I have killed a heap of armadillos with summer with 300 BO (subsonic) and 38 special and those work but rarely kill the armadillo DRT but a 30 RAR pushing 150gr Core-lock at 2400 fps takes the damage to another level of bad things to them.


Not the best shot placement since in the deep leave I though his head was his tail and vice versa, none-the-less the armadillo did not move an inch after I hit him. The trigger sticks are awesome for stalking through the woods.

Finally finished clearing one of my hunting trails today.



Here was the biggest challenge...



That's an 18 inch bar on the "Husky" 350.
One big asspen.

Made it to one of my destinations ( a lake just South of the BWCA) with this under my vest on this cool,dreary,snow,sleet,rainy Minnesota day



Even though it took about 4 hours, I still enjoyed the outdoors today as most days!

I really like that 1911 and leather.
I zoomed in...but couldnt identify either.
I'm still kicking around an 'outdoorsman gun ' . I can't decide between a s&w 29 or a 10mm 1911.

The handgun is a Kimber Rapide, 45 acp with a round count of 945 with not one hiccup since new in October of 2020.
The shoulder holster is made by a great family owned company in my hometown, LoboGunLeather.com .

My carry was my XDM 45acp compact with 255 grain hardcast +p (Underwood's little lipsticks).


I did take a break on one of the Leopold benches that are scattered through the 9150 acers of wetlands and woods.


@Armored farmer mentioned taking his Bible to read on the stand. I think I will take my copy of A Sand County ALMANAC By Aldo Leopold copywrite 1949. It has been a few years since I last read it.

How does the xdm handle the 255's? How much of a recoil increase over standard 230 gr rounds?

Thanks, a couple of photos are our hunting land and others are of Sandhill.
My father bought the land in 1993 and has provided us endless hours of enjoyment. It has a good mix of woods and marsh. It boarders agriculture fields on one side (dairy farm) and woods on the other two that are also used primarily for hunting.
The XDM compact handles the 255+p loads fine. Yes there is more recoil, but not a significant increase. I contacted Springfield Arms to confirm that I could shoot +p from the pistol and they replied that XD series handguns are +p rated.
I have been carrying it a little more now that the weather is cooler and covers well with a shirt OWB.

Gathered hickory nuts from a tree on the edge of the property. Sadly, the ol' hickory is not in the best of shape. The G40 with a Burris FFIII, KKM barrel, and Kenai chest holster is my favorite woods carry setup.

Hiked in one of the state forests in Central New York today.

Carried my late uncle’s Winchester 9410.

Found an old stone wall well into the forest.




Also found evidence of a buck…


All in all a very nice walk.

The chore list remains to be addressed on another day…

I did my favorite loop in North Cheyenne, Buffalo and Sweetwater Cañons yesterday.


Started out getting the stink eye from some deer.



Walked into North Cheyenne Cañon.

Had to adjust my pack and my pants, seemed like a good opportunity to get the gunporn out of the way

My first Waypoint was Helen Hunt Falls but since it's not very big and you can't see it from the Trail I took this picture of the head of Buffalo Canyon. It's a big Granite face right in the middle of the photo.

It's really hard to get a good photo of this place but this is the top of the Granite wall



This is looking East from it. This was also as far west as I got everything from her back was heading home.
