"Discreet" rifle case..?

I went to Guitar Center and picked-up a rather boring low-end soft guitar case. I sized it to fit my Mini-14 and the OAL allows many different firearms to fit comfortably. It has gone on many road trips where I want a long-gun along, but don't want to be seen by the Bliss Ninnies transporting a Tactical Ted rifle case into the motel/hotel.

It seems this thread has drifted from rifle to pistol/handgun...
I use tool bags from HD, HF, Lowes, Dewalt, etc.
They are built to carry weight so are perfect for a handgun and ammo, and some have internal pockets that can be used for mags too.
I remove the gun/mags at home and leave/store ammo in them.

I guess it just depends on the situation. If you are already rolling with a bunch of other travel bags and suitcases, a guitar case doesn't really expand your footprint of exposure. However, if it's just grouped with an old sweatshirt and muddy running shoes in the back of your SUV, the target value has definitely increased over some other crappy bag.
 
I used one of those hard side cases from Boyd’s with wheel. So you drag it behind you. It doesn’t scream gun case, especially if you put a bunch of non-firearm decals on it.

Sure they are black or blue, but no other labeling screams out. Gun folks will naturally be suspicious. Regular folks don't seem to notice.

That's a good point about the weight. For my Thompson cases (both the FBI case and the violin case), they would fall apart if I tried to carry them for any distance by the handle. And if the magazines were loaded, with the weight of the ammo it would be next to impossible. The cases have to be carried by being cradled from below. I think the FBI cases weren't really portable -- they would more or less permanently reside in the trunks of the patrol cars.

Tennis racquet bags are perfect. Believe me know one will ask you about tennis. And if they do just blame your spouse that plays. It can be left in the car without notice more than guitar cases as far as value.
 
Laundry baskets can be rather large DESIGNED to carry heavier loads and fill with loose (clean) laundry. Small bottle of fabric softener in corner, hang a coffee cup or water bottle on the opposite edge. Rolled top on a bag of pretzels & a magazine suggests eating to reduce boredom at the laundrymat. Fold if you want but, better coverage is left floppy.

If the local busybody notices you don't go to laundry very much, remember...your dryer acts up whenever it wants to. Fixing it is cheaper then replacing at $600. Say, 'I HATE the laundrymat.'

Oh yes BTW place your items on...the bottom UNDER the shirts LoL
 
I guess I would be most curious about how one would bring their high dollar hunting rifle, say, into a hotel and not have it look like something valuable is inside, gun or not.

Guns, guitars, fishing rods, tools, snowboards, etc. and their respective cases l will still clue people in to something and all of those things may attract the wrong kind of attention.

Hence, the post towards the beginning about the case and context of carrying the case, thoroughly being anonymous.

Does such a thing exist or are we in the realm of illusion and misdirection?

Not very covert. I have several bags/ cases that don't look tactical that fit some of my guns, mostly acquired at Goodwill. Tennis racket bag , laptop case, bat bag, ski travel case, tool bag, gym bag, zippered shut (Falling Down aside), etc.

A garment bag would probably be your best bet there. They come in all sorts of sizes, and materials, and you should be able to find one that would work. Rig a sling, or use the one on the gun, a couple of sweat shirts, or whatever you might be wearing for the trip as padding, and no one will be the wiser.

Skinner sells a "garment bag". Might bend a closet rod if fully loaded, though.

LOL. Loaded up like that I bet it would. :)

Thats a pretty nice set up. If they offered it with a Molle attachment set up Id go with that one over one with the attached pockets. Better/more options. I prefer everything in there, ready to go as much as possible.
 
I don't understand, all the movie snippers carry their rifle, super scope, silencer, and ammunition in a brief case, easy solution, right?

But my discreet gun case is a minivan. Who would suspect anything of a Soccer Bus? I don't go farther than the parking lot to the range carrying a gun case, and it is pretty obvious what I am there with and for.
 
Before I put a micro reflex sight on my Mossberg Shockwave, I would carry it in a soft clarinet case. I also have one of the bulldog cases that @chicharrones linked to. It works well for carrying an AR pistol (10.6" barrel or less) or AR rifle broken down. I mostly carry my Kel-Tec CMR30 in mine now days.

Lots of good ideas posted. One thing to keep in mind is how you normally dress along with the type of environment you are in.

A golf club bag or tennis racket case would not have worked well a few years ago when I was still riding motorcycles daily and my hair was long. But a good pool cue case would have fit right in.
