Short Lightweight suppressed hunting rifle

Ok guys I am tossing around the idea of building a short lightweight bolt action for hunting and general range fun 16-18 inch barrel so what do you recommend more than likely it’ll be a 6.5 of some sort but I wanted to hear what y’all thought?
 
Are you going for quiet or not? If your focused on sub sonic ammo and super quiet then the higher the caliber the better for terminal effects. 300 AAC Blackout in a bolt gun is super quiet and easy to do. 350 Legend would be an interesting cartridge. The new 8.6 Blackout would also be a excellent choice for a short suppress quiet bolt gun.

I want it to be hearing safe but I’m not after a subsonic load


If they still made the suppressor ready CZ 527 in 6.5 Grendel I’d buy that and be a happy man but alas they don’t
 
7mm-08 is pretty ideal in this role. It retains more velocity than the 6.5s while pushing higher B.C. bullets at that lower weight than the .308. It's a bit of hair splitting, but it really is a pretty optimal suppressed short barrel hunting round. That's why it's my first pick for integrally suppressed builds, which have ported 18" barrels. The effective barrel length is ~15-16", the 9" core makes for an OAL like an unsuppressed 26" rifle, and they put down at ear levels in the neighborhood of a suppressed .22 Pistol while still managing 2,500-2,600 FPS with 140-150 gr bullets.

This is my demo Sussurrus, built on a Mossberg Patriot 7mm-08. It's 8.5 lbs with scope, just took a mulie with it a couple weeks ago

A muzzle mounted can obviously won't be as quiet as this integral, but a good one will make the mild mannered 7mm-08 very pleasant in the field.

The .308 would be my recommendation for the non-handloader, though.

What does that integral suppressor measure at for sound level? How much quieter is it than a more traditional muzzle mounted suppressor?

We meter 122 dBA at ear, while a good ~8" muzzle mounted can comes in around 128-130. There's also a big difference in tone. The integral has a really slow release of the overpressure back through the barrel ports, so there's a protracted "woosh" following the shot rather than the normal disconnecting of a compressed air hose type noise you get with muzzle mounted cans. So measured dB-wise, 6-8, which is significant but not enormous. Human ear perception, there's a big difference.

Sonic crack is still present, of course, but whether or not that registers higher than the 122 at ear depends on environment, whether it's reflected or not. I can pick it up in our shooting trench or next to a building, but not in an open field.

We had a couple videos, but deleted our YouTube account and haven't got them back up on Full30/Juxxi yet. I'll try to remember to do that soon if I can find the files.
 
My first suggestion was going to be a Ruger American Ranch. I just wish they'd offer them in the .308 class of cartridges with an 18-20" barrel. Namely 6.5CM, 7mm/08, etc.. The American Predator .308 is an 18" and anything else could be shortened and re-threaded.

Could you build a integrally suppressed savage barrel, that'd be easily installed by the end user? There might be a bit of a market for that I'd think.

Depending on price, I don't think I'd mind one myself.

Yes, I can. But the end user would have to be able to inlet/profile the stock for the 1.5" tube. I don't know of any stocks or chassis which will accept it without heavy modification.

Most of the Susurrus integrals are built to order on supplied rifles, and I actually haven't ever had a Savage sent in. Rem 700s are popular, a few Ruger Americans, I have done some on the Mossberg Patriots and MVPs. I'm about to do an MVP Predator .308 and a Howa 1500 7mm-08 as complete units. Barrels are cut & threaded, profiled, ported and moly resin finished, core parts are made, just have to weld and make the rear caps and tubes, inlet stocks.
 
B-14 Ridge Rifle - Bergara Rifles USA

Bergara B14 Ridge rifles have 20" and 18" .308 and 18" 6.5 Creedmoors that are "guaranteed" 1 MOA factory rifles with threaded barrels just like you're describing what you want. I recently purchased a 22" barreled version in 7mm-08 and have discovered it loves Hornady Whitetail 139 grain factory ammo (not match quality, just plain hunting ammo) and have been thoroughly impressed. I run a 7" suppressor on it and it's a pussy cat to shoot.

No "building" necessary.
 
I have a RAR similar to armored farmer, except mine is 300 BLK. For the most part, it only gets used with subs. A great suppressor candidate IMO. I also have a Mossberg MVP thunder ranch in 223 that is suppressed, it is also a great gun for the $.

Been hankering for one of these though - although I think I’ll do mine in 6.5 Grendel instead of 300blk, as these are chambered, or maybe 6 Dasher.

Those are cool!

But short range numbers for sure. At that barrel length, they yield to my old Marlin 1893s in .25-35.

Yeah, 8” Blackouts aren’t necessarily intended for Mile Milk Jug Challenges. I know the dudes who own these three - the first production run - the owner of one of the black ones (green) took it to 1000, but it obviously doesn’t happen without the right gear to get there. You can make a sandwich between bang and clang. The red one on top, the dude has taken a bunch of coyotes and a couple deer with it this year, I shot a few rounds with it after our PRS state finale this fall out to 600. The other black is knocking down piggies for a buddy’s daughter.
 
My lightweight hunter is an oddball, a ruger 96/44 lever action. Under 6 lbs loaded and a short 16 or 18" barrel.

I have a Rem 700 SPS in 308 with an 18" barrel. But it sits in an AICS chassis and is far from light.
