Axe, sledgehammer, gun, sword...broken beer bottle even. An attempt to attack me with anything that could kill me would get the same answer.

Yes but the question regarding the video is, person walks into a gas station with an axe but doesn't immediately start trying to hack people up, what do you do?

Immediately leave? Wait and see where they go/what they do? What do you do if they approach you the way the aggressor did in the video, seemly innocent but with a axe in hand?

This sub forum is about strategies and tactics thus the question.

Ok, my mistake. I read the article about the sentencing for attacking folks and misunderstood what my role in the proposed scenario would be.

Wide berth, vacate the immediate area. Observe from distance while alerting authorities. Under no circumstances am I allowing them to get within axe handle+arms length of me.

That's a tricky one. No audio, and no benefit of being in the place of the first victim. Look in the eyes, tone of voice, body language, etc, all come into play. The first clue was the perpetrator walked into the store with an axe. But I'm sure there were many more signs of danger.

This "Ambush" type attack is difficult for most people. As a trained fighter... martial artist since age 13, both student and teacher over the years, I would not take my attention off a person with a dangerous weapon like that. The perpetrator waited until the first victim turned his attention to the checkout counter.

The perpetrator was waiting for the right time to strike. I would not have given the perpetrator an opportunity. I'm always watching people wherever I go. I'm not stressed or in battle mode all the time. It's just a state of mind you learn to maintain while going about your daily life.

In my younger days, in my 20s I was the target of two attempted ambush type attacks over a period of a few years. One was a guy tried to pick up a chair to use as a weapon. I didn't allow him to do that. He did not prevail. Everything about the way he looked and the way he was behaving brought my alert level up to condition red.

I would say the first victim should not have let his guard down, but he didn't have any guard up to let down. Most people will become casualties in situations like that. A few of us won't, but we are getting fewer all the time in this day and age.

PS: I could not leave and allow other people to become victims. In my paradigm that would make me complicit in the violence against other victims. I only spent 5 years as an LEO, but I can never clock out. I'm always on duty.

Hmmm, this is a tough one. There's so many normal folks carrying an axe into a convenience store. Lemme consider this for about .021 seconds. ADEE or some such? not for me. I'd take an hour to learn what that means. My actual response is to get the #%@* out of there and call police while under cover or didi out..

Keep as far away from the person as possible and leave as soon as possible. Normal people don't go to the convenience store with an axe.

When people do something that departs from normal behavior by a significant amount, it pays to be very cautious around them/avoid them if possible. Here are a few examples of departure from normal behavior by a significant amount:
  • Being naked in public.
  • Carrying potentially dangerous objects out of their normal setting or in an unusual manner. For example: Hammers not on a job site or home improvement store. Machetes where there is no brush to cut. Axes where there are no trees to chop down or wood to split. Large scissors at a restaurant. A big rock while not doing landscaping work. This includes carrying an object in the hand that might be appropriate if it were carried by another method. So someone with a handgun in their hand vs. in a holster or fanny pack. A rifle held in the hands vs. slung.
  • Screaming.
  • Behaving incoherently.
  • Making extremely unusual or bizarre claims/statements. For example: "Those webworms up in that tree are talking to me and they are angry." "I once saw JFK naked."

A concealed carry license is not a peace officer’s commission and just because the police (in the US) carry guns doesn’t mean that private citizens who are carrying gun have any public safety function. As others have posted, stay out of axe range and exit the premises.

They no longer pay me to deal with EDPs who are armed with axes or other weapons so I’m not going to if it is at all possible to avoid it.

Two things might make this scenario different in my community. One, it actually wouldn't be all that surprising to see someone carrying an axe in the convenience store. This is a logging area, as well as having a significant and growing population of do-it-yourself, back to the land small farmer types. You see all kinds of things in stores and in parking lots that would be considered very odd in other areas of the country. Two, this is a very small town. I'm not sneaking out and leaving folks in a store to be hacked at by a nut with an axe. The chances of someone in that store being a friend or acquaintance of mine or my wife's is extremely high. The chances of a friend of ours having a friend in that store is very nearly guaranteed.

Very good points. I would also like to point out that a chick dressed like a stripper (clearly NOT taking a break from her evening land clearing/logging job) walking into a convenient store with an ax (where they probably don't offer sharpening services) is cause for attention. Something should not seem "right", since it clearly wasn't.

 Definitely. My comments were addressed more to the question in the OP, rather than the specifics in the video or article. (BTW, it wasn't a chick. It was a dude who thought he was. ;)) If the circumstances played out as they did in the video, I would most certainly be paying very close attention to her/him. I'll also say that my response would likely be different depending on who was with me, if anyone.

Run, Hide, Fight is a thing.

I can't think of any reason for somebody to be walking into a convenience store with an ax in their hand.

I'm absolutely sure that 99.9999999% of the time (Actually, I'm 99.9999999% certain that I will never have to deal with this situation) I would be overreacting but I would leave immediately. I would put my things down and walk out.

Should the person with the ax bar my exit I'd get out my OC. I'm fairly confident that I could incapacitate somebody with an ax with OC before they could do me any damage. If they were still on your feet and a threat after the OC I'd shoot.

After reading through some of the other responses I have to ask why would you stick around in a situation like that? I am specifically asking the people that are saying they would wait and see what develops.

I can't come up with any plausible scenario that involves somebody walking into a 7-11 an ax in their hand. I wouldn't stick around.

More so that it was in Australia where I would be willing to bet random citizens are not allowed to walk around in public with an ax

"…Under what circumstances might you expect to see somebody wandering around 7-Eleven with an ax in their hand?…"
EXACTLY! We extend far too much latitude for bizarre behavior coming from genuinely weird people.
Even in "logging country" one needs hands available to carry coffee and egg sandwich back to the truck.

Don't be in Australia (or anywhere) that I can't carry is the 1st thing I would do.

So, it happens in FL, when she enters ensure 21' and politely ask, "Excuse me, ̶M̶s̶.̶ person (I ain't getting axed over pronouns) what are you planning on doing with that axe?" :neener:

What I would not do: stand there like guy at register did when she walked in and turn my back to her, nor let her approach as close as the guy that struck up a conversation.
