It's pretty nice... super solid, no rattle. It is heavy, however, when compared to standard sliders, but it helps balance the weight of the barrel. I would not use it on a regular carbine build. My rifle weighs 9.5#'s as it sets in the photo (minus magazine,) so it's not something I'd want to carry on a daily basis... but so far, I'm pretty impressed with it.

I use TAC for my 223/556, and it does great with 77 and 90 SMKs. Also, it does very good with Barnes 85's. TAC is less dirty than H335, I think, and I believe 62gr is the limit for H335.

I use TAC as well, as I've got a decent amount. My best loads are Varget for .223/5.56 but its always seemingly harder to come by
I have yet to try Varget, since it is more expensive and hard to get than TAC. I get TAC from my local sports shop almost on a regular basis, and since I get a 10% discount + no hazmat charges, it is a good deal!

I very recently bought a lower assembly for 5.56 from PSA because the price was right and I needed to give myself a Xmas present. Now I'm faced with selection of the upper unit and it is a bit more difficult (for me) because there are so many choices.
I want accuracy but not looking for a bench rest rifle. I want my AR to be as close as possible to the battle rifle it started out to be so I prefer open sights, a carry handle and the original forearm configuration. Im not sure if I want a 16" or a 20" barrel and a little confused as to which rate of twist will best suit my shooting.

Go with a 1-8 or 1-7 inch twist, I'd recommend a match grade barrel as they can be quite capable and those twists will shoot 55-77gr just fine

Are You building an A1 ,A2 , M4 ?. I just scanned through the posts this evening and saw your post .
I'm finalizing MY LAST AR build . I had parts pieces extra parts stock and found a Deal on a NICE barrel and figured I'd pop together a decent lower ,from MY parts and pieces to complete this last Rifle .
So bought a Quality upper receiver and squared it up and assembled it . Along with an extra quality lower I had triggers pins springs the whole Nine yards . What I was short of all things was a stock and Magpul grips . ALL MY AR 15's and 10's wear A2 stocks ,as I'm 6-4 that 5/8" helps but isn't why ,availability is . I detest those plastic shoe horn skeleton stock abominations .
IF YOU are NOT going for super accurate ,I'd NOT spend big bucks on a high dollar barrel . IMO NOT worth it and here's why .
I've got a couple of Older Bushmasters pre 98 XM15-E2S 20" Target chrome lined bores ,along with targets proving in MY Rifle anyway ,that #15 shots can fit under a dime at 200 yd. . Yeah STOCK out of the Box AR's . BL C-2 25.5 gr. with Bulk 55 grain bullets
I'm sure I don't have to tell anyone who is building AR's what they cost NOW . Do I like the other AR's I've built ?, OH Hell yes are all of them as accurate as those original Bushmasters , OH HELL NO . They Look cool though
. I enjoyed building ( assembling ) AR's regardless of calibers chosen and Most Proud of MY last 6.5 Creedmoor and it too wears A2 furniture . It's well past time I SHOOT ALL OF THEM and Quit building them . That's on ME .

I ended up going the inexpensive route with a PSA lower and a BCA upper. Honestly although I haven't shot it yet it looks terrific. I already placed open sights on it but they are close quarter combat style sights designed for quick target acquisition not precision shooting. After I have those sights properly lined up I plan on installing a good scope. With the scope I'll be able to determine how accurate the setup is. Most not all AR's are capable of sub 1 MOA ,with tuned ammunition or high grade factory fodder . Depends upon several factors one being ammo selected so as to match barrel capabilities . Sounds like You've got it under control ,so BOL and may they be in the X Ring

I was fooling around with various scopes I have to see which would be the best choice and noticed that the mounts needed to be fairly high in order to clear the open sights. Also noticed that I will probably need see through mounts if I wanted to use the open sights without removing the scope. I have never been particularly fond of see through mounts and do not recall seeing any on any AR's.

You'll need at least a 1.6" tall mount to give you a lower 1/3 co-witness.
Most of my AR mounts are 1.93" tall.
I don't have fixed sights, just prefer tall mounts.
Don't have back up sights on my scoped rifles, just the red dot ones.
Run n gunners can use offset iron or red dots.

In 2023, what is the best AR15 muzzle devices that you guys are using? I have been looking at the BCM mod1, and the YHM Phantom comp/brake. Ideally it would serve all three functions of flash, comp, and brake, and also not be too heavy or decrease accuracy.
1.5" sight height and 9 power scope, the front sight should disappear.

Latest build...just waiting for the final components to be shipped...
Giessele stripped lower and upper. Giessele 15" m loc handguard. Giessele super duty lower parts kit, with Ambi fun switch. Giessele SSA-E trigger group with anti walk pins. Giessele H1 buffer and spring.
Magpul UBR Gen 2 stock. Magpul MOE+ grip.
White Oak SS 18" spr barrel. Rifle length gas system.
Odin works tunable gas block and gas tube.
Fortis SS muzzle brake.
JP Rifle full mass Bolt carrier group (salty buzzard that is...yikes!)
Will be topped off with a Burris quick detect mount (until Giessele has mounts back in stock...been out for a long time) and a Leupold 3 HD scope.
I'm torn about the stripped upper. I have a BCM upper too..I like it a little better than the Giessele..BCM upper has a much tigher fit on the barrel..you have to heat it up a bit to slip the barrel in..not so with the Giessele. The finish doesn't truly match up with either upper..both the Giessele and BCM are a little lighter black than the lower. Still thinking about which I want to use.
Still waiting for the BCG and lower parts kit..then the fun starts!

I just wanted to post a few pics of my current 5.56 family. You've seen most of the parts, but I've settled on 3 rigs for my varying needs. I've been using these for a bit and just realized that I haven't changed anything in a while, so I can call these done.
This is based on a 12.5 Criterion hybrid barrel.
13.9 Criterion Core barrel with FCD 6315 keymo suppressor mount.

On these builds I've gone to Criterion barrels from BA because the difference in accuracy across several different types of ammunition was noticeable. The Criterion barrels are far less picky and shoot everything at least acceptably.
This is based on a 12.5 Criterion hybrid barrel.

I'm very very VERY pleased with the White Oak barrel!
I experimented with two different BCGs..the JP and Toolcraft NiB. There is no noticeable difference in function or accuracy. Both performed flawlessly. The JP is staying in this build.
The Fortis brake works very well too. I am able to keep the target in the scope picture under recoil...even on 24x power.
