Long Range Rifle/Scope/PRS question(s)

When we shoot NRL-22 at Altus we shoot the five NRL-22 Stages of the month (On the NRL-22 website) which are 35 to 100 yards, then five other stages designed by them where we shoot out to 250 yards and occasionally to 300. We shot out to 250 from the rocks one match.

Bang.............................................................................................................Ting.

Lots of fun.

My match rifles are 6 Dasher and 6 creed. I’ve been loading Dasher for a long time, and got into 6 creed in ~2015, replacing 243win and 243AI, predating the GT. I could easily be convinced to shoot GT instead of 6 creed for the greatly improved barrel life, and might equally appreciate broader factory support for 6GT than Dasher, if I were starting over.

The downside of a 200yrd zero for PRS is the fact all hosting ranges will offer a 100yrd zero board for confirmation/correction.

I was set on the 243 Win, but since the same bolt face would be suitable for the other 6mm offerings, I think I will order a 6mm GT barrel and be done with it. I have to research on barrel twist for the GT. I almost dropped money on a new RPR 6mm CM last night, but there is no left handed version. I do not shoot left handed, but I like the fact that I do not have to come off of the trigger to run the bolt. Weird, but I like it. I will order some brass I saw on-line yesterday.
I hope the action will arrive next month, and the barrel will take 2 weeks. Will let you know how it went.

That’s no joke - the extra speed does make targets bigger. There are windy matches where I’ll selectively take my 6 creeds instead of Dasher or 6 Grendel, only because it makes my targets almost twice as big as the BRA/Dasher or 6.5 guys.

Do you make 6.5 Grendel brass or did you buy enough when it was available?
I have a gas gun that I do not shoot much due to the lack of brass. I do like it, but loaded ammo is pricey!
I want to order some 7.62x39 new brass and make some Grendel.

This technique works ok for bench shooting from rests, but will absolutely cripple you for PRS competition. The support hand needs to drive the rifle on target and sustain the reticle picture while the trigger hand runs the bolt. In this first picture, you can see my fingertips wrapped around the front end of the support bag, but what is hidden is my handstop on the left side. In the second picture, you can see my support hand locked around the handstop, clamping it to the bag, and driving the rifle on target.

I HAVE made Grendel brass in the past from x39, but I don’t do so for my 6 Grendel (243LBC). I have something on the order of 6.5 Grendel brass on hand, with 1000pc that I’ve necked down to 6mm.

Once this barrel is toast, I’ll switch it to 6 ARC. I’ll give up about a grain and a half of powder capacity, but pick up the ability to shoot factory ammo, which isn’t a bad thing sometimes.

I know in the Great Lakes Region/MTC matches- the MD throws in enough weak side positions in a stage, that you would be changing hands as well...the only rifle I built and kept that is strong side eject, weak side charging is a 10/22 for Steel Challenge.
My PRS rifles are conventional strong side/strong side for both Rimfire and Center fire

Yup. “Support shoulder” is a common staple - or at least, it’s supposed to be. Support side shooting (and a mag change) is even included in one of the standardized PRS Skills Stages, which are included in the rule book to promote the fundamental skills of PRS competition (Skills Stage 4, of 4). Most matches include one of the four Skills Stages to act as a tiebreaker for the match by fastest time with most impacts on that stage.

Although a lot of guys DO game the rules on that stage to fire from the support shoulder but still run the trigger with their right hand, at least when prone. Not quite as feasible when firing from positional supports where the right hand is needed to drive the rifle.

I enjoy that when we have to shoot opposite/weak side. So far we have always shot off of a table top etc where we can use the bipod and a bag in the rear.

Centerfire- last two times we fired it- standing/stump with bag, and standing/Roof top with bag
Rimfire- was in the doghouse stage- where you are engaging targets from 5 of the 9 holes inside the doghouse.
one of the things I really need to work on this offseason- weakside/support side shooting even if just from prone

Maybe you can get them to start

I think it's more of the facility issue than anything. They use my local long range which has you shooting across and down a valley. The closest target is roughly 200 yards (obviously changes depending on which shooting platform you are using) and the next closes target is around 260 yards. Anything closer than 100 yards would have you basically shooting down a cliff. The facility does have shooting bays that run between about 40 and 90 yards deep, but Im not sure they facility would want the competition to be taking up the whole thing. But, when I get out to a PRS or Accurized AR match, I'll talk to them about it.

There are a few more shooting ranges around I can see if they have anything going. Last time I looked the PRS guys were the only real game in town (outside of benchrest and FTR), but that obviously could have changed.

So I did some more searching and found some matches. Through NRL22 website it shows my local PRS club holds 6 matches a year. But it doesnt list anything about it under their website or Facebook pages.

I figured out how to search for a certain type of match on Practiscore and it shows a few coming up at nearby ranges. Sweet.

The new Foundation Arca rail on the Foundation Revelation stock with the 20" Vudoo in it.

Balances pretty well. I have the higher mag catch for the Hawkins M5-DBM bottom metal on the way,
as well as the ATS Tuner. My guess is the rifle will balance pretty well with the tuner on sans the bipod.

Extended mag catch for the Hawkins M5 DBM bottom metal, just discovered this option. They recommend it for .223 & .22 LR. Don’t see mention of it anywhere but a video on their site.
