I have surfed this sight since 2005-2006 and became a member in early 2007. When I first started reading on this sight everyone would listen to what you had to say and conversate on it. It seems like with the wave of membership in the past two years ( especialy 2009) people seem to be know it alls and don't want to hear what you have to say. I have made a few suggestions on here lately and people go right on the defensive and start adding things to their story that you didn't know to begin with and try to make you out like an idiot or bad guy. I have had a lot of people try to belittle me from every way they can. I am here to say if you don't want people to give you their input then stay off of a public sight. At least don't blow up at every little thing someone suggest, listen to what they have to say, if you don't agree tell them why, and in a cool calm manner. Something I learned when I was a kidd " no one can make you mad, but yourself. In other words it is your choice to get mad. I feel people need to grow up and get some thicker skin, quit being so damn sensitive.

I am 29 years old and even I know that I will learn something from everyone, even if they are 99 years old or 5 years old.

A few examples would help. Link to those threads you found offensive. We'll all work with you to resolve the issue.

TBH, that statement reflects almost all forums, gun or not. Questions and/or statements, for some reason, bring out the attacks. I wish I could explain it.

Explain it? "We, the United States of the Offended...." It used to be that if somebody didn't like what they were hearing, they'd quit listening. Now they take it as a personal attack and sue.

Clint C,

Best advice I can give you and everbody else is,

1 Continue to be HighRoad. Some buzz words and thoughts everybody could use more, might be tactfull, fact based, polite statements. When opinions, and preferences are involved state so.

2 Use the Report button. The mods cannot monitor all the posts without our help.

3 You can choose to ignore, or just agree to disagree.

4 Nobody has to listen to me. This is Just an old mans opinion. Going to take my nap now, bye.

Something to add. Maybe people shouldn't reference Wikipedia I know how to use the internet, I don't want to read wikipedia I want to know peoples personal experiences on THR.

This forum is a lot politer and "adult" then many many others (gun related and other topics).
But, the OP is right...some folks just have to get a bit thicker skinned in some threads...maybe grow up a bit.

I had no idea there would be such a huge response so fast. A lot of the ones I am describing are one were people just get their feeling hurt for no reason. I hate to report something and get a somewhat good thread shut down. Maybe thats what needs to happen though and people will quit being so sensitive.

I have stopped going to some sights because of this, and one because it just got to political for me. I like to come to these sights learn and teach, not to fight over pitty things.

OP
This happens at all types of forums.
But I've noticed a lot more hostility since the recession stared
to really effect a lot of people too.
So factor that in as well.

I used to hang out mostly at business type forums.
More or less eBay spin off forums for mom and pop merchants.

Really nasty people out here naturally as well.
So one must take it ALL with a grain of salt.
I've learned it's better to disengage (most the time)
than it is to spend my free time trying to reason with some people.

I'm guilty of flying off the handle myself on occasion too, I suppose.
But I can tell you when people say
and do stupid things, I tend to call them on it in the real world too.
Not so much as before though.
I don't get out much and interact with the public often any longer either
because there seems there are just too many inconsiderate people
out here and it seems so many lack common sense or common courtesy.

I may be one of them I supposed, because my tolerance for this type behavior is
pretty much what has me in and out of stores quick and back in my cave, my comfort zone,
my place where sanity and common sense still apply.

As my great departed father would say.

The whole world is in trouble.

Heres something for you: this is a site, not a "sight". Not trying to be an a$$, just a huge peeve of mine. I think texting and the internet is going to be the end of proper grammer. You're, your. A lot, alot. Break, brake. :banghead:

But I digress...

The internet allows people to say things and act in a manner that they NEVER would in public (I have to disagree with post #5). I have come to the conclusion that this will never change. I just choose websites that have a minimal amount of unconstructive behavior. THR is not perfect, but is the best gun forum I have found.

So true.

The US Constitution guarantees Freedom of speech :)D )but does NOT guarantee the freedom to not be offended. As a matter of fact, it was designed to protect that very type of speech.

It's not just you. There are a few THR members (most of whom have just joined in the last year or so) whose comments I dread. They offer little to the topic at hand and often come off as arrogant know-it-alls, commonly putting down other members. I wish there was a system in place to prevent this sort of thing on THR, as I enjoyed it much more when I could ask a question or respond to one without the usual suspects calling be stupid or a liar or telling me I must be wrong because that's not how "the pros (they see on the Outdoor Channel) do it."

Clint C said,

Not all reported threads get shut down. Most reported posters get a PM from the mod (Yes, I have gotten them) Educating or counciling them on forum rules.

Now back to my nap!!

Also, it's easy to read a tone into a message that wasn't intended by the person posting it, often because of the vocabulary that's used. I try to keep an even keel in my emotional mind while reading posts to avoid this problem.

I wonder if thehighroad.us is any better? perhaps it has more of the members from 'the good 'ole days..."

Well, after reading the two threads you posted as evidence, I'm not so sure what you would expect.

First thread, some proud papa posts about his son. He didn't ask advice or a question, just bragging 'bout his children. He didn't ask for your advice.

Second post, you post a pretty controversial remark, for whatever reason. Of course you're going to get comments similar to what you wrote but from the opposite standpoint.

Unless you get paid to write them, or someone asks you, maybe hesitate to offer your $0.02.

And lastly, this site is probably better than a lot of other sites on the web for manners.

I will never tell someone how to raise their kids.

In my opinion though that is way to much rifle for a 8 year old boy and he should not be on a scoped rifle either.

Start out with a BB gun, then a pellet rifle, then a .22lr, next comes a shotgun, and none of these should have a scope on them. Kids need to learn how to shoot before they can use a scope.

Sorry if this offends, but this is how it is.

Clint, this is the link to the example you gave of innapropriate responses in THR. You posted this in a Thread I started to celebrate my son's first deer rifle. This thread is still running with dozens of terrific posts from proud parents talking about their joy in seeing their child enjoying their first gun, as well as numerous post from people remembering chilhood experiences. The above was the only negative post in that thread, and it was simply out of place. I agree with everything you stated in opening THIS thread; I really think you could benefit from heeding your own good advice.

I agree this entire discussion is clouded by a HUGE pot calling the kettle black contingent.

Am I guilty of this behavior at times YES

But do I try to feign sainthood in another thread complaining about others actions I engage in as well......NO
