The John Dillinger tribute Thompson

In the new issue of Guns & Ammo there is a full page ad on page 43 from a company called America Remembers for a collectible gold plated engraved semi-auto Thompson gun. It is marketed as:

The John Dillinger "Public Enemy Number One" Tribute Thompson.

Does anybody besides me see this as an atrocity? John Dillinger was a thief and a murderer whose criminal misuse of this particular firearm is one of the main reasons that YOU can't legally own a real fully-automatic Thompson gun.

I wonder if 'America Remembers' will release the Son of Sam tribute Charter Arms Bulldog or The Klebold and Harris Tech-9.

They could have/should have made it a tribute to J.T. Thompson, but instead, the coattails of the Depp movie were too tempting to pass up.
 
This is really nothing new. Remember the impact the movie "Bonnie and Clyde" had on pop culture? A few years ago, Charley Manson t-shirts were all the rage. A drunk horndog like Ted Kennedy iis still cheered by people. Nobody ever said Americans had any brains, taste, or morals.:barf:
 
Next issue will be the Charles Manson Tribute butcher knife.

Saw another one in last Sundays paper advertising a John Wayne Colt six-shooter picture.

The loading gate was on the left side, and there were no hammer or triggers screws in the frame!

"tribute" - a gift or service showing respect, gratitude, or affection

dedication to a murderous criminal, American Remembers failed on this one.

Dillinger did have quite a public approval rating...as did Bonnie and Clyde a few years earlier...


Vastly more in fact, than 'Banks', or, the FBI ever did, or ever will...

Anyone honoring that POS oughta hand their head and leave town. again just my opinion.

Let's face it 'outlaws' are a symbol of the American Experience. There's a reason a John Wesley Hardin business card will sell for $500. Law enforcemnt guys weren't hauling Thompsons in violin cases, and yet the cases remain popular.

Maybe in poor taste and ironic (given the NFA laws of 34), but hardly a moral outrage.

People actually DO buy paintings made by John Wayne Gacy (which I personally find creepy as all get out.). There's a huge market in serial killer memorobilia out there which is probably not as lucrative as selling a pistol once owned by (insert old west outlaw here), but I personally don't see the difference.
 
Its very poor taste, but they will sell every single one of them.

If America Remembers wants to turn a profit off of the exploits of a cop killer, then it is their right. It is also my right to never purchase their merchandise.
 
Funny you bring this up. For the past couple of years my FIL has wanted a true Winchester 98 Rifle. Finally a couple of weeks ago, I took him to the gun show here in town. He found and bought the first one he saw. It was the Illinois(sesquicentennial I think) tribute rifle. I told him he needed to counter sink one of those Obama coins they were offering on TV awhile back onto the other side of the stock opposite the Illinois crest and resell it as the Obama Commemorative 98.:evil:
 
I wouldn't buy any of America Remembers craptasticized guns. I think they should put out a Bin Laden Krinkov to show just how off the charts they are.
 
That is very poor taste, +1 to what the guy said about Dillinger being one of the reasons WE the law abiding can't own a real tommy gun.

And to add...how about the DC Sniper Edition AR-15?
 
I haven't seen the ad, but sounds like EXTREMELY poor taste. IMHO Guns and Ammo staff made a HUGE mistake in accepting this ad. I will no longer purchase any of their publications. I will also review copies of publications I already have, and will make every attempt to boycott advertisers.

Sad indeed that a murdering thug like Dillinger is glorified in order to turn a fast buck.
 
Kevin5098 I'm betting with the money America Remembers spends advertising in gun rags they could get the "Guns and Ammo Sucks Tribute Rifle" advertised.

Well the same ad is in the latest issue of American Rifleman. I'd love to have one but I'm not paying $3200 for one.

Seems like a pretty strong and ridiculous overreaction on your part.
 
I wouldn't buy one no matter WHO it commemorated, I'm just not into special edition stuff like that. I think about how many "shooters" and how much ammo I could buy with the same money. I'd much rather have a plain-Jane new semi-auto Thompson, but that ain't gonna happen either.

Or, I could always just rent the real thing again....
