Magpul MOE vs CTR - Stock

CTR friction lock and a mounting point for a sling swivel.

The friction lock just locks onto the side of the RE. It tightens the hold but isn't always needed.

I found the CTR friction lock pretty useless for the price. You have to be a pretty picky shooter to need a stock that is length adjustable to the inth degree...and on a battle rifle of all things.

Now, the QD swivel mount is totally worth it...but not for $50 more, IMO.

What MagPul should do is add the QD swivel mount to the MOE stock and forget about the friction lock junk. Find a happy compromise in price between the two and just sell 1 stock in that configuration. They'd make a lot more money that way.

I guess my thinking on this is...if the boogie man comes to the back door, are you really gonna spend the extra 5 seconds adjusting your stock?

You have the stock already adjusted and locked down so it won't be moved easily. I like the friction lock personally. I really wanted the QD sling swivel. I can move my slings back and forth between rifles easily.

The friction lock prevents complete failure of the stock latching mechanism should it be subject to battle damage, abuse such as banging the stock on the ground to free a stuck case, etc.

When locked it does tend to tighten the stock down against the tube a bit for a no slop fit.

Is it worth it?

Ironically, we just had someone report that he broke a MOE in another thread, while mortaring the rifle. Would a CTR have broken? I dunno.

CTR here, like it.

MOE is just a 6-position stock. The CTR is a 6-position, but the friction lock removes any and all play from the stock when shouldered. I'm not very picky about my AR's, but I think the CTR is the best stock for the money. Its very very solid.

I like the CTR Stock because it locks up tight. I have had three of them. I don't like the floppy M4 type stocks. I have not tried the MOE stock.

why would i need 5 seconds to adjust it? it stays at the setting i want. the only time i would move it would be to collapse it fully for storage.

I would venture to guess that's b/c it's a collapsible stock.(?) Isn't that the point of a collapsible stock...to be able to reduce the length of the rifle so it can be stored/transported easier? Am I missing something? You still have to adjust the thing eventually..right? ANd more options lead to more confusion...of course, you already know that.

I'm sure there are folks like you who keep their rifles set just to their liking 100% of the time, just as I'm sure there are some of us who keep the rifle collapsed and tucked out of the way.

IMO, it's just a frill I don't need...if it goes bang...I could care less how the stock is adjusted or how wobbly it is. But, that's just me...all function all the time over here.

I haven't used an MOE but the CTR seems to hold up better than an adjustable ACE to larger calibers like the 458 SOCOM. I put a couple dozen rounds through the shorty with the CTR and it worked great, the Ace wouldn't collapse after 6 rounds because the tab between positions was deformed.

Me too. I bought my sixth CTR not long ago.

Just put a MOE on my ban-era RRA M-Faux. I like it a lot and the price is right. The stock actually fits much tighter than the standard Carbine stock, so any bit of play is minimal. I've never managed to break a CAR or M4 stock, so I predict the MOE will serve me just fine at 1/2 the cost.

Have had both CTR and MOE, I prefer the CTR if only for the sling mount. When one of my lowers had a MOE I kept looking for a way to add a QD sling mount to the lower, which costwise would have made up the $ difference between the two, so I sold the MOE and got another CTR.

just a thought,, but looking at that ace socom stock... I wonder if you could have fired it from the fully retracted position, so that the force is focused on a CHUNK of the metal verse the couple mils of aluminum
