What are we gonna call the new AR15 uppers?

The Neo-AR (like the Matrix, lives in both worlds!) hahaha, No, I like "Short Action AR" AR30? SAAR? (S.hort A.ction AR) Bad-A$$-Bone-Break-AR? hahahahah

I like big bolt, its simple, it states the exact difference, looking at the 2 bolts side by side it would be easy for even a noob to see which is the "big bolt"

Thats about the nerdiest thing I will ever read I think

If I had seen this before I invested in the 6.8, I would be giving stats on how good it is. I'm all for making a single shot 308 upper for the ar15 lower.

I don't get what .30 RAR gets you that you can't already get with 6.8 SPC. Bullet weights and velocities seem similar, but magazine capacity is lower with the .30 RAR (single stack), and the 6.8 can reach those velocities with a shorter barrel. Can't be NIH (not invented here) syndrome since Remington developed both.

The .30 RAR gets you a .30 cal bullet, along with the major disadvantages you list. I imagine it's so they can sell another proprietary caliber and gun to try and lock you in for future ammo sales. I don't think it looks useful.

True the 6.8 can get close to those speeds but only by running thermonuclear pressures shooting short stumpy light low bc bullets in a barrel that only allows the use of those bullets. Ask float pilot how well 6.8 performs with heavier than 110 grn bullets.

Simply put the average 6.8 guy is far too high speed low drag to understand how awesome 300 Savage ballistics from an ar15 is

... well, it first seemed like the perfect idea; a slightly downloaded 308 cal, out of a rifle using all ar 15 parts, nothing bigger except the bolt/carrier, and bbl.
but if the mag has to be a single stack, well, that just ruins everything, in my opinion. If it cannot double stack to some degree, within a ar 15 mag, then what was the purpose of trying to put together a rifle, that fit into the ar 15 envelope as much as possible?

Why does everyone think ALL AR15 cartridges have to be able to utilize a 30 rd mag.:banghead: This isn't a zombie killer cartridge to chug away down range round after round. Just about everyone has a couple different uppers for that.

NO

This is a highly specialized bambi killer rifle cartridge that essentially turns the ar15 into a much lighter and handier 7400 or BAR, Note how not many folks complain about the single stack Big Bore ar15 cartridges

What with Remington/DPMS coming out with the new ar10/ar15 hybrid upper as well as Olympic's WSSM uppers what terminology are we going to use to refer to this new class of ar15 upper?

Let's see ... an AR-15 carrier, AR-15 bolt with an AR-10 bolt face and an AR-10 upper (externally anyway) reamed out for AR-15 parts .... seems like this offering should be called an AR-13 since it's closer to an AR-15 than an AR-10.

I'm usually open to new and innovative ideas but this seems like a complete waste of time. It's like a senior engineering design project .... an exercise in "what if and how about this?". In reality, it's an amalgamation of AR-15 and AR-10 parts with little purpose. If you can afford it, buy an AR-15 in .223 and an AR-10 in .308 and have the best of both worlds with ammunition readily available for both. If you don't have an AR and only plan on buying one, maybe this would be a good choice ... maybe not. Ultimately, this seems to be like one of those ridiculous crossover vehicles that does nothing well.

I have a 25 wssm and a 6.8 spc. The wssm hands down for hunting. There are not many out there that use their AR rifles for hunting. I hope this changes. A AR10 in a 450 marlin would be cool...

I like the Olympic WSSM uppers. As soon as they're available again I'm getting one in .25.
MJR007 how does yours shoot?

I'm going to call it: "This is the gun the gun writers have been waiting for!"

Detroit might call it: The AR-1500

The Bradys would have to say: Another one? we're waiting.

And the ammo makers are going to look at one another and say: "OK boys, lets raise the price on that short mag stuff."

That bolded bit right there might be the kicker. I'd rather spend a few hundred on an upper, and some more on reloading components and be set for life for deer hunting off of my pseudo-customized AR, than spend well over $1000 to get a rife setup I'd use just as infrequently, and then have to re-personalize. I think the concept of getting some nice .30 cal performance off of an AR, rather than subscribing to any of these far-out "6.tactical" whizz-bang cartridges or buying another rifle to dump additional $$$ into, is a cool one.

To each their own, but I'm still seriously thinking about buying one of those uppers and some ammo once they both become available, and seeing what that .30 RAR can really do once handloaded.

The 25wssm Oly upper is fine. My will go out after the holidays to be cut down to 20” and turned down to .750”. Factory ammo is not great. I have no use for this cartridge out side of the AR rifle. For some reason I have had more issues reloading it then normal, maybe I just want to keep comparing it to my 25.06. I can get 3000fps with 117btsp Sierra's, but the rifle likes it best a little above 2900fps. The wssm case is about the max water volume you are going to get in an AR15 rifle. With a five round magazine restriction for hunting in NY the 25wssm is the AR15 deer rifle - for now.

I agree I'll go so far to speculate that right now ar15's outnumber all the ar10's that will ever be made on a magnitude of at least 40 to 1 and in my opinion there's a good reason for that. To me the ar10 is like the Desert Eagle, they're big, expensive, heavy and quite frankly don't do anything special. If I can spend $700 on an upper and get 100% of the bigger platforms performance (wssm - 30 OSM) in the svelt ar15 package I'll do it in a heartbeat. I have two uppers that shoot cheap ammo and I hand load so ammo cost and avalibility for these new cartridges is a NON issue for me
