Put a CZ 550 American .30-06 on layaway

:)I'll be able to get it within a few weeks or so. I handled tons of different rifles and it seemed to be the one. I really like the craftsmanship, single set trigger, and the reputation of CZ. I got it for $550 new at a gun shop. Now I just need to figure out what kind of scope/ring combo I need. From what I hear the stock rings are a bit too high?

This will be replacing a plastic Savage 110.
 
Wow, nice rifle, I didn't know that they were only $550!! I would suggest a nice glossy Leupold of some flavor and a nice leather sling.
 
I bought one about 3mo ago and couldn't be happier...
I don't think the rings are "too high" or anything. I just used the regular CZ rings they came with (1" dia). My only gripe with them is they're flat head screws, I'd rather have a leopold set with the torx fasterners...
 
Congrats on your pick! I have a CZ550 "Premium" in .270, basically a slightly dressed up American. The only difference I can see is that it has a jeweled bolt.

I have had the rifle since '03 and it ha salways shot great with several types of ammunition. Probably the best factory ammo in my rifle is the Fusion 130 gr, but it shoots under an inch with 130 Noselr Ballistic Tips and 150 gr Partitions.

For the scope rings, I chose Warne and they have worked fine. I hear Talley and maybe Leupold also make rings for the CZ550, just be sure they aren't too low as you may have a problem with the bolt handle clearing the scope.

I have one in .30-06. Mine shot shotgun patterns out of the box (3-5 inches) at 100 yrds. Had it bedded and it shoots sub-MOA with about anything I feed it. The only thing I've found to dislike about CZ rifles is their wood stocks are "variable." My cousin has a CZ-550 Premeium grade .30-06 that shoots sub-MOA and has a beautiful Turkish walnut stock. He also has a CZ shotgun that has wood that is as beautiful as anything Weatherby or custom stock makers sell. I've also see CZ rifles come from the factory with the stock split from the fore end all the way back to the magazine. No, I'm not bashing CZ as I own 3 of their rifles and 6 of their handguns.
The stock rings work fine. I have a Nikon Buck Master 3X9 on my .30-06.
 
No, you need to get the factory cz stock rings, and get them HIGGHHHH! unless you are going to use a scope with a front obj bell under 40mm; once you hit 40mm and above, the high ones are a must.
 
I had the chance to get the same one you have in 30.06 at Sports Authority for $549. I should have got it at that time two months ago cause now they don't carry them anymore:banghead:. This is a very difficult rifle to find in stock or on display to compare to other rifles. Now the prices are like $650 and up:eek::banghead:

The only other rifle I saw that had a smoother action and felt better to me than the CZ-550 American was the Baretta Tikki 3 Lite in Stainless steel. This is a great handling and light rifle:)
 
i've been considering getting a 550 american safari magnum in .416 rigby then rasping off about a pound of wood & rust bluing the metal. maybe one day cz will figure out how to make a stock that actually looks good
 
I'm going down to check out a CZ-550 in .308 if it hasn't sold yet but at least I know I can order one in .308 or 30.06 for $639.
The Baretta Tikka 3 Lite is the other rifle $550 in 30.06 I definitly like and there is a good chance I might get this one over the CZ-550 American depending on availability between these two rifles.
I also note that the CZ has a floor plate different loading than the Tikka 3 which is the traditional detachable clip style that I'm used to.

You don't have to have factory CZ rings...I don't and mine work fine with the Leupold
3X9 40mm
 
I think the price was lowered to $550 because the shop couldn't sell it. Not many people around here know about how good CZ's are or about CZ at all for that matter. +1 for me :) I'll get some pic's up once I pick it up which might be a couple weeks still.

I only want to spend about $200 on a 40mm scope. I'm thinking about slapping on a Nikon Buckmaster 3-9x. The glossy leupolds do look a bit nicer but I would rather not spend much more than $200. The VX 1's are in that price range but have less light tranmission than the Nikon does.
 
I purchased the Warne rings in medium height for a 42mm objective lense bell, and there is plenty of clearance, both fore and aft, on my rifle.

It has become my favorite rifle for shooting. Even with reloads the ammo isn't cheap, but it shoots so well, and is so mild in 308 caliber, that I can shoot all day, and can hit most anything I can see. I chose the walnut stock over the alternatives because it fits so well, and I like the warm feel next to my face. The action has smoothed up quite a bit in use, and it is so accurate. The fit, finish, and quality of this rifle in a mass produced firearm is astounding. The wood is hand fit to the action, the action is polished and dehorned.

The only issue I have is a quirky feed on the 10 round magazine.

I believe my next one will be the FS in 6.5 Swede or 270 for general hunting. This one in 308 has the heavy barrel and is mostly for plinking, or stationary hunting, as it is quite heavy.

Lastly, look at the IOR line of scopes. IME they make a super clear scope, built ruggedly, with a FFP option I have come to admire.
 
I was thinking about a CZ550 in .270 but the one they had in stock had the older, clunkier style wood stock and weighed about the same as the .30-06. NIce rifle! I can't wait to get mine.

Even though I'm pretty lightweight (160 lbs) I can handle the recoil of a 7mm mag from a light gun already. I think the .30-06 will be fine...
 
I have Warne QD rings and a 3X9X40 Leupold VXII on my 550 in 30-06. I highly recommend the Warne rings.

The action length is the same on both, or either. The 30-06 and the standard length cartridges have a 5 round internal box magazine, the 308 and similar cartridges share a 4 round detatchable box magazine. So you sacrifice 1 round (maybe... if you single load the first round in the chamber), but you get a quick reload should you exhaust your first 4 (or 5) cartridges with the "short" cartridges.

My next one will be a standard length cartridge, FS, model in either 6.5x55 or 270 Winchester.
