Would You Give Aid

This has had me thinking the past couple of days on what I would do in a given situation. I have decided for myself but I would do but I would like to hear others thoughts on the subject.

If you had to shoot a BG in a justifiable SD situation and you just incapacitated him but did not kill him... would you render first aid or would you just call the police and let him suffer the consequences? If he did expire it is one more potential killer off the streets; correct? Or, do you feel that you have a moral obligation to try and save his life?

If you did give first aid do you think this would work for or against you in a civil court? I can see it being twisted either way.

My priority would not be to render any type of first aid. I'm not trained in FA...
I would make sure the threat is eliminated and see if he/she has any other BG friends that are possibly going to become a threat if I holster up or reach for my Cell. If there are bystanders I will ask them to call 911 if I am not able to do so.

The only thing I know is that in SC is that you are covered under "Good Samaritan" laws if you attempt to treat someone, but only up to the level of your training. I have first aid training, so I'd be covered from liability if I attempt to treat someone up to my level of training (which is pretty much stick a bandage on them).

I'm not sure if we are required to treat up to that level, though. I'll have to do some checking on that.

I don't know anything about first aid, I'm not a paramedic or a police officer, I have no real way of helping or restraining the person... the best I think I'd want to do is get the hell out of there or at least maintain what tactical advantage I might have, I have no idea what he's still got in his pocket or pumping through his bloodstream.

My main concern would be my survival and family's safety, anything that comes after that would really depend on the situation.

Well........I am an EMT in Va I have a duty to respond and help. If I did not I had better have a good reason, First thing in EMT school, Scene safe and crew safety. I might be able to get out of it as the sceen is not known to be safe bullets were just flying and I am not safe as I dont have gloves, blood borne pathogens, you know?

It is impossible for a layman, or even trained professional, to properly assess the extent and nature of wounds from a distance. Also, your only knowledge about this person is that they were a threat to your life and you were forced to wound them to an unknown degree to get them to stop.

Putting those two facts together, you are under no moral, ethical or legal (anywhere I'm aware of) obligation to approach them, putting yourself once again within the envelope of risk from them, to take the time to ascertain the nature of their medical needs and provide help.

Basically, you don't walk up on a bear you just shot in defense and try to treat it, you shouldn't do the same with a human who actually tried to kill you just now.

Stay back and call for police and EMTs. Let them do their jobs of securing the threat, making sure it is truly safe, and then providing aid.

Going up and putting your gun/skin into their arm's reach is foolishness.

It's not about letting anyone suffer for lack of first aid -it's about ensuring that the threat is rendered (and remains) a non-threat.

Anything that I do to place myself within striking distance of an attacker is A Bad Idea <tm>. Just because the attacker/intruder is proned out on the floor moaning does not mean that they are no longer a threat to me-n-mine.

I will call 911 immediately and let them know to roll an ambulance, because somebody's been shot. My sole job after that is to remain prepared in case the intruder resumes being A Bad Guy, and attempting to render first aid will likely compromise that goal.

There's one thing you should NEVER do: do NOT wait before calling 911. Do NOT say, "Well, he's dead. No hurry." That can land you in trouble if the guy is alive and you are now complicit in his death or further injury due to delayed medical attention; I wish I could find the cite, but it was a real case and happened a few years ago.

Call 911, and wait for help to arrive.

As an ex-EMT, I can say that it scares the CRAP out of me when I think of what we used to do. It was considered unmanly to use gloves, etc.

Common criminals tend to be scum, and involved in the drug culture. That means HIV, Hepatitis, etc. I'm not touching anyone.

I am a registered nurse. I am occasionally asked this question. I make it a point to not respond either way.

It is impossible to say what you would do under these circumstances.

It is impossible to predict a situation and all it's variable dynamics in advance.

Stating conclusively what you would or would not do in such an incident can become testimony you regret in the future if you are ever called into court after a justifiable shooting. Remember friends have long memories, and what you type on the internet becomes a record of your thoughts.

That being said, I carry a gun to protect myself if need be. My safety and the safety of my loved ones is my guide.

I would like to think that first aid would be a mute point given good shot placement and plenty of them. My philosophy on scene security goes along the lines of making sure that the first one down is not going to get back up when I move on to the second. Should the scene be secure and wounded needing first aid, priorities are friendlies first and render first aid to the bad guys only when and if it can be done without jeprodizing the safety of the scene. i.e. someone to cover the bad guy while someone else renders first aid. Depending on the situation I would render first aid, also depending on the situation I would quickly build a gallows and hang them before emergancy services showed up. Depends on the situation.

No way would I render aid. I'm not trained to do so, and I will not expose myself to the risks inherent in attempting to save the life of someone who just tried to impart serious bodily harm or death on me.

The risks include, but are not limited to:
- Infection from whatever disease he may be carrying
- The BG wrestling your gun away after it's holstered and you're bent over him
- BG's friend sneaking up while you're preoccupied
- Further injuring the BG and being blamed for wrongful death because of an uneducated attempt to render aid

He can wait for the professionals to arrive. I will not drop my guard until the police arrive and take him into custody.

The question is based on not recognizing the risk to your safety.

You just were forced to shoot this person to protect your life (assuming this is a justifiable shooting). That assumes the person was an active threat to you.

What makes you think that they're any more kindly disposed towards you since you shot them? You should assume that they still are a threat and that you should not approach them.

Like others have said, they're still a potential threat. My goal is to maintain my distance until law enforcement and the paramedics get there. To that end, I feel my only responsibility would be to call 911 and ask them to send help.

If by first aid you mean kick in the ribs, then yes i would give them first aid many times.

Seriously tho,id not tough them.Doing so invites them to continue fighting imo.
Also i feel id be so stunned in a situation like that im not so sure id be doing much if anything helpful.

I can see most of you guys haven't seen a man with a sucking chest wound. Ain't a whole lot of fight left in them. I'm not going to get close to him but it would be the neighborly thing to do to throw him a rag and tell him to apply direct pressure.

Assuming that I could render 1st aid without jepordizing myself or others then yea I would help. The idea is to stop the threat. But you better believe that I am going to make sure that guy has nothing on him that can hurt me.

Zoot-

We do not shoot to kill.
I shoot to neutralize a threat. An attackers fortitude after being fired upon is a moot point.

If attacked I don't think that the foremost thought on my mind would be, "I hope this poor soul wont be wounded to badly by two hydra-shocks to the chest". Call me selfish, I know for a fact I would be far more concerned about myself in this hypothetical situation.

Also, I was an EMT a LONG time ago. I wouldn't really know what to do, based on that training, any more than the average person, because I don't remember. Never had to deal with a gunshot wound, either, believe it or not.
