At first I was about to give up on my Yugo SKS because it was freaken heavy and the metal detachable mags that I had for it was useless. But recently, I purchased five 20 rounder Tapco mag, and I cleaned out my Yugo fully. I took it out to the range, and it functioned flawlessly with no hiccups. Those Tapco mags literally brought my Yugo SKS back to life. And I've also recently discovered that there's a special feature on my Yugo that I didn't even realized until someone at the range told me. I could actually turn off the gas valve and put it into single shot mode. I had my Yugo SKS for like 4 years now and I didn't even realized this mode. It actually helped improve accuracy a tad bit. It was awesome. As for the 20 rounder Tapco mags, it was actually easy to reload with other mags because it would always leave the bolt hold open after the last round. I could reload as fast as my AK or my AR.

You know, the more I look at my SKS, the more I realized how well built it is. It's quality is actually much better than the AKs that I owned. It was milled, and the parts were flawless. The more I think of it, the more I'm beginning to love it more than my AK now.

that's used to launch rifle grenades

I have a Norinco SKS, I purchased in the early 90's new for $125. I'm kicking my self for selling the Paratrooper I bought used and installed a composite folder stock. I put a low end scope on it. The scope was virtually usless to me because I don't have much experience and knowledge using scopes and getting them sited in properly but that's my problem. The Paratrooper was a D model with a detachable duckbill clip. My point is that unless you use a bipod the extended round clips hender you getting off an accurate shot, especially if you were hunting, unless you had something to lean on and the mag didn't interfere with you aiming ability. This also applies to AK's but I have that rifle for if the SHTF scenario. This is only my opinion but both of these rifles are more functional w/o scopes and I don't think other than the Dragonev Sniper AK rifle, the average Joe doesn't need scopes on these weapons. Maybe some other type of optics will function better but I've never seen any troops in films using these weapons with scopes, these are fairly close combat type of rifles. They were made to take abuse and still function, with minimal maintenance. I guess if you have the money and knowledge to outfit these rifles with all the bells and whistles, is more show than anything. If you needed to be dead on accurate past 100 yards you would have a bolt action rifle w/ a good scope. They are still fun to shoot though!!!

Try getting the Yugo M 59 without the grenade laucher attachment and it s even better. i shot mine last time at the indoor range and make tiny little groups at 25 yds . THe guy next to me shooting his Remington .243 was amazed and let him shot few rounds. He did well and voiced his desire to get one at a gunshow.

time for a Fusion Stock set from tapco.

I think I'll try the Tapco mags. Mine just are too hard to get in and out of my Yugo. Otherwise, I do like my SKS.

Between myself and my friends, I have been fortunate enough to either own or borrow just about every military rifle of the past 100 years. I have spent countless hours shooting these types of guns, both semi and full auto versions. As my online name implies, I have a decent collection of HK weapons.

So, I speak from experience when I say that the SKS is probably one of the best military guns of all time. It's short stroke gas piston and tilt locking design are very advanced. The AR world is all excited about changing to short stroke gas pistons that have been on the SKS since day one.

The biggest problem with the SKS is it's owners who get envious of the more tactical look and the higher capacity / interchangeable magazines of other rifles and have to "pimp" their SKS. It's a brilliant design to begin with, Sergey Simonov was a genius, so leave it alone and enjoy it for what it is.

Most people who complain about the accuracy of the SKS or even the AK, forget that the problem is they are shooting Wolf ammo. Now, I'm not knocking Wolf, it is great low cost plinking ammo, but match grade, it ain't. Find some decent brass cased ammo, Yugo surplus is a good choice, and you will find that the SKS is a very accurate rifle.

With the right ammo I have gotten great accuracy and reliability from the SKS and the AK. However, having recently purchased one, my new hands down favorite 7.62x39 rifle is the Czech SA vz 58. That is one amazing piece of kit and also uses a short stroke gas piston. It has the interchangeable hi-cap mags that the SKS lacks and the last round bolt catch that the AK lacks. It's also extremely accurate and reliable. Be sure and spend a few extra bucks and get the D-Technik version from Czechpoint, not the VZ 2008 from the hit or miss monkeys at Century. The genuine Czech milled receivers are a work of art.

Yep, something about SKS's. I just got into them this year and already have decided I love them. Cheap, durable, accurate, what more can you ask for in a rifle? I have shooters in 30-06, .308, and .223 that are serious guns. The SKS is just plain fun.

Love is grand, just don't get anything stuck in the trapdoor in the butt, that is for the cleaning kit *wink*.

I wish my first SKS was stock, but unfortunately I bought one that was modified with the ATI folding stock.

Thanks for the links to the tech sights. I look forward to purchasing one.

I enjoy my Yugo and Chinese SKS's immensely. I'll second the Tech-Sights. The only improvement that's worth every penny.

The gas shut off on the Yugo comes in real handy if you reload. ;) I am looking forward to trying some Hornady V-MAX reloads with it. Should be loads of fun.

absolutely agreed that a SKS should be left in stock configueration. It is most reliable when feeding from the fixed mag. The sks shares the same ammo as the AK, which unfortunately caused people to throw all kinds of random tatical junks on it to make it look more AK like :banghead:

for pete's sakes people, the SKS is a 1945 design, would you throw duckbill mags and collapsible stock and reddot on your Garand or K98k? And whenever peopel complain about the inaccuracy of their SKS it's probably because they have a wobbly $14 receiver cover mount + $20 NC start "tatical" scope on it.

SKSs are better than highpriced M1 carbines and ARs for one third the price. Shoots as good , too.

That's funny right there.

nathan, "better" is subjective - they don't have the ergos of the other two you mention, that's for sure - for starters.

Sorry man, they don't shoot as good as an AR,at least not my AR's.
I've got 9 SKS's,YES they are a GREAT weapon for the money spent,
and they are best left stock.
Don't think for a minute they shoot as well as a well made AR.

The TAPCO mags do work, and are a great improvement. There is a very easy modification you can do so you can insert and remove the mags with the bolt closed.

IMO, this setup is equal to the AK.
