Things seem to change so often; is there any way to keep track of which popular scopes are made by the Chicoms? Thanks...

Those mostly sold by Centerfiresystems for SKSs . They are good for .22 s in my opinion but they could be okey on centerfire rifles but zeo may wander after couple of hundred rounds.

Many major names have scopes made in China. It's just economics and cehap labor there. The difference is the big names have someone in country to oversee quality control.

Just about every scope is made in China or some other country with cheap labor.

The exception are Leupold scopes (some of which are made in China now too, I think) and high end European optics like Swarovski. Many of those are a grand or two. Most people would rather buy a $200 scope than a $2,000 one, which is why more and more top-shelf manufacturers are moving there.

I'm not a big fan of Chinese goods, but not everything they make is junk. The old "Made in USA" guarantee doesn't mean as much to me now that we owe bajillions to China.

I just purchased a Leupold scope because it was made in the USA. I could only afford a scope in the $200 to $300 range, picked up several in the store, the only one that was made here was the Leupold. I was sold, not to mention a pretty dang nice scope for the money.

Even the major makers offer a Chinese made product in their line, one must make sure to
look for the "imported" notation in ads to be sure.

+ 1 with Leupold, the older units anyway.

Leopold I bought last year said made in the USA. I think there is some law that if it's parts are made in Chi they have to say something like Assembled in the US of foreign made parts.

Last weekend I was looking at Lowes for a US made bathroom faucet. Every single one they had either said made in Chi or Assembled in the US of components made in China. It pissed me off so much I ordered one on-line made in Italy instead.

China Mart

I call Wal-Mart "China-Mart" these days.

The only for sure USA product that I buy there is WWB.

My father who served 22 years in the Navy during WW2, had told me Japan had named a city USA, pronounced use-a.

i.e. (Made in USA)

Let's try to keep this from becoming a WalMart Bash Fest, which will either prompt someone to close it, or make Justin age prematurely. ;)
Isn't it the law that they have to put "Made in China" on that stuff?
That's Customs requirement, AFAIK. Country of origin has to be marked on the merchandise or its packaging, or Customs will refuse the shipment entry.

One of my suppliers forgot to have some merchandise marked, and they were forced to put "Made in China" stickers on something like four million medals before Customs would allow them in.

Seems to be a popular urban legend. My father told me the same.

LINK.

Wally world actually has quite a lot of US-made products. And china. and Taiwan. and phillipino. and spanish. and thailand. and.......

They haven't sold out any more or less than other retailers. Just look at the box first.

You wanna see a bad one, check out Hobby Lobby. I don't think one single product they carry is made anywhere but China.

Very few companies actually "make" scopes. Most $200+ are either sourced from or made in Japan, China, Phillipies by JOL (Japan Optics Limited). Leupould only does assembly in USA.

It is NOT complex: US labor priced itself out of competitiveness in world markets. Nowhere was it written that only the US could be the world's prime mover in smokestack-industry products for export. The rest of the world industrialized to sell products at an affordable price.

And "affordable" has meant that our poor can enjoy a material standard of living that's above most of the pre-1950 middle-class.

You get right down to the nitty-gritty, it's amazing that US gunmakers can provide the quality we see for the prices we pay. Same for quite a few other products, but you can't win 'em all...

In the early 1950s, Nikon publicly stated that they used Zeiss formulas in grinding lenses for their cameras. All their springs were made of German steel. Their cameras were the worldwide standard of excellence. Back in the day, I used Contax, Leica and Nikon. I stayed with Nikon. And now they make scopes...

All that Capitalism is: "Find a need and fill it, and sell it at a competitive price." Nowhere is it written that anybody "deserves" success, whether as an individual or as a society.

Just stick with Bushnell for inexpensive optics, they have always served me well. Nikon, Sightron, and Zeiss Conquest are also great optics for the money. Leupold is overpriced IMO, but the VX-III+ series scopes are pretty decent.

:)

When the products are created in an atmosphere of competition and freedom I am all for the open markets. The problem as I see it is in the Asian countries especially those of closed societies like China, there is no regulation regarding environment or worker safety as well as the labor being basically enslaved.
The US has its fair share of inflated labor matters but it also has regulations laid upon its corporations that would snuff out the smokestacks in any economy.
I avoid the ChiCom products and have preached against them for 20 yrs. If the rest of the world had to play on the same field that the US does I have no doubt we would bury them all.

Mav, My 2 bushnells are made in China and Korea. Neither are high dollar scopes, it would be pushing it to say there weren't bargain basement scopes. Still haven't fired the rifle one is mounted on.

My point, other than to ramble, was that even bushnells are coming from China now.

I wasn't trying to suggest that they were all Japanese, just that even the low end Bushnell's were pretty decent quality. If you don't want something just because it is made in China, I can respect that, but there is the occasional good product. I have some low end Bushnells that have served me well, not great glass, but they hold zero and just plain hold together...are their better optics?..Sure, but not at a better price.

For really good optics that are a good value I think you can do a great deal worse than Bushnell (all series, but particularly the Sportview/Rimfire on the cheap, and Elites for quality glass), Nikon (Prostaff, Omega/SlugHunter, and Monarch series), Sightron (all series, particularly S-II), and Zeiss (Conquest only). Other good optics exist (many that I own), but I wouldn't consider most a good buy for the quality of the product (specifically Leupold which is either poor quality glass or is grossly overpriced IMO).
