I want to build a SBR and would like to build a 7.5" if I could get one that was reliable. What do I need, a special buffer and/or spring? One other thing, can it be registered to wear a 7.5" and a 10-1/2" barrel? It'd suck to spend the time and money building a 7.5" gun that would not run right and not be able to just stick a 10-1/2" upper on it.

J.B.

I would build it as a pistol make sure it runs good have the receiver engraved then send in your form 1. FWIW most suppressor manufactures won’t warranty their cans on anything less than 10.5” (some don’t like you to go that short) due to the increased pressures.

also list any barrel size you may want to use on the form i.e. 7.5, 10.5 etc.

that way its covered ive also "heard" you can put on the form any size but ive also heard to be as specific as possable and list all probable sizes you may use

You could put any length upper on a registered SBR lower, as long as you can still return it to the stated condition. :)

I use a standard CAR buffer and standard spring in my 7.5", but I attached a KX3 before even firing it so I don't know if I would have had an issue with functionality beforehand or not.

Really? That's good to know. I read a thread some time back about folks putting a range (7.5"-16") and IIRC some went through, some got rejected, so it seemed the best idea was to put all common AR SBR barrel lengths down.

You cannot put more than one length on a F1 when making an SBR. It has ONE length. Just make sure you can return it to that condition, is all. :)

TexasRifleman's post from this thread: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=506355

This one is iffy. Way back when several years ago the ATF would approve Form 1's with things like "under 16 inches" or "various" in the place where the length goes. I have a couple like this.

ATF has said that you have to meet whatever is on the Form 1, so in the case of "various" it appears you are good no matter what.

Now, that said, ATF at some point stopped approving those forms without a specific length so the best way to deal with it now is to put ALL barrel lengths you might want to use on the form, as well as all the possible calibers if you intend to use different uppers. They won't approve "various" in the caliber portion of the form either.

So for length, I would put "10, 11, 14.5," for mine, since that's what I want to be able to have the options to use. Maybe even shorter if you wanted to put a pistol upper on it.

Then put ".22, .223, 6.8SPC," etc in the caliber section.
Can we all get on the same page? :D

Have you had one rejected for putting multiple lengths on the form?

I have one, and another poster said he has one, that was approved with multiple lengths and calibers on the form.

It certainly wouldn't surprise me to see them reject another form filled out the exact same way, that's par for the course with ATF.

I have an older one that was accepted with "Less than 16 inches" written in the length spot and "various" written in the caliber spot.

Later on I sent another form and had that same language rejected.

I'll put this here, rather than start a new thread:

Can you apply for SBR status on a Revolver? The reason I ask this is because I've seen 15" barrels for the Dan Wesson revolvers, and I couldn't help but think that it'd make a dandy carbine. Would you then have to file for every barrel you had? Going for the 2" SBR might be a bit extreme.

ATF does request that you send NFA Branch a letter if you PERMENANTELY reconfigure your NFA firearm. It is a good idea to include a duplicate for them the stamp received and return, in case anybody (range officer, LEO, etc...) tries to give you grief because the description does not match that on the f1/4. Mailing a letter costs .44--there is no point in not doing it.

Only indicate 1 bbl and OAL on your paperwork. They want to see a SPECIFIC configuration now.

Have you had one rejected for this? I have heard this several times lately but I have not heard of anyone actually getting rejected.

Way back you could put "multi" for the length and they would take it.

Then they started rejecting those.

The last one I did listed out several lengths specifically and they took it.

But I have yet to see anyone personally have one rejected for including more than one length or caliber.

Not saying they won't but so far I hear the story but have not had anyone confirm it.

I believe that would just be a long barreled pistol unless you attach a buttstock. Wouldn't a rifle (or SBR) be designed to fire from the shoulder and have a buttstock?

I was referring to having a stock made for the 15" Barrel, then having to register the whole thing.

YOU ARE ALL AWESOME AND FULL OF AWESOME INFORMATION.

The stock would be made for, and attached to, the receiver, not the barrel. That 15" barrel doesn't mean anything more or less than the 2" barrel.

I know, but you said the stock would be made for the barrel. That doesn't make sense.

You can list 2", 4", 6", 8", 10", 12", & 15" on the F4.

Yes, I have had a F1 rejected for multiple barrel lengths. I was told to put ONE length and that's that. Simple fix, but it delayed things a short while.
