LNL spent primer lockup

Can you explain what is happening a little better?

The LNL just has a hole that the spent primer drops into and then into the brass tube to the plastic tube. The hole could be gunked up or, I suppose if you had the timing off on the press it would hit the side of the hole but as for hard depriming you could just be working with military crimped brass or just having resizing resistance or not have your depriming die adjusted right.

Does it happen like this:

You raise ram, decap/size, lower ram.

When shell plate is advancing the shell to station #2, the plate "hangs up" and won't advance, because the primer didn't completely drop out.

If so, it happens to me occasionally. Here's some things to minimize it.

- Make sure your decap pin is tight inside the die, and it's not slowly riding up.
- Hornady's recommendations for the height of the decap pin is a little to conservative in my opinion. Set it as low as you can, without it banging into the pin's collar.
- Make sure the shell plate is tightened down.
- Every few hundred rounds, clean the hole & top of the spent tube with a qtip... make sure there's no powder or grime around the rim.

Finally, I have one of those cheap Radio Shack jeweler's screw drivers handy... the tiniest one in the box. If it binds, i push it through the flash hole until the primer drops. Some cases are just tighter than others and really want to hold on to the primer.

I also use a metal container to catch them. When I'm reloading, I listen for the "ping" when the primer goes into the can. Don't reload as fast as you can pull the handle... if it DOES bind up on a primer, you don't want to be slamming it along and damage something.

I had the exact same problem. In my case, it was caused by a loose decapping pin. tighten the collet that holds it onto the end of the shank.

If it can wiggle, it allows the primer to partially re-seat into the pocket on the downstroke of the ram. This causes it to jam the shellplate against the ram.

Called Hornady the guy I talked to said he never heard of it.

I know that Hornady has heard of this before because I called tham about it. They had no idea on how to fix it. I don't know what the cause was, but it stopped doing it about a month later. Like you I had the depriming pin as low as it would go. It drove me nuts.

I've had this problem also it seems to happen more often with the 9mm and 380. I think the primer is sticking on the decap pin and partially re-seating when the ram is lowered. I'm sure this happens on other presses as well.

Large pistol primers do not do this on my press. I use RCBS and Hornady dies and I've had it happen with both brands.

sometimes with criimped primer pockets it will take so much pressure to decap them that the decapping pin will impale into the primer and it will pull it back slightly when you raise the handle.

So does the Dillon size/de-cap die. =Spring loaded de-cap pin will flip off spent primer, and not draw back into primer pocket.

I have this issue with my .357 / 38 die. What is happening is that the decapping pin is pushing out the primer but somehow the primer sticks to the decapping pin instead of falling down the tube and going into the garbage. Then when you lower the ram the decapping pin pulls the primer back into the primer pocket. It is annoying as heck on a progressive press and has been known to cause me a few tantrums here and there. The only guaranteed fix that I have found is the Dillon Dies that have the spring loaded decapping pin. Sadly I only have one for 9mm. Dillon has good stuff but it is quite a bit more expensive than everyone else.
