PSL ammo question

I have one on the way also, my reading is that the rifle was designed for the light ball; the heavy ball will, in some posters/writers opinion, batter the rifle into an unusable state if any quantity of HB is fired thru it. You may want to try various types of the LB before purchasing any cans, most users indicate that individual rifles shoot better with one or two types, i.e. one rifle will shoot Czech better than Russian. I'm looking forward to getting mine.

Treat it like an M1 Garand. Light ammo will never do harm. A couple heavy ball here and there, might be okay, but it isn't a good idea whatsoever to do it on a routine basis. The receiver just wasn't built to take the forces generated by the heavy ball.

i say try it out and see. I never noticed any of the signs of battering on the rear trunnion that are indicative of an issue.

Consider this: the PSL was designed to be an SVD equivalent, and to shoot the SVD's 7N1 ammo. It's optimized for light ball ammo. I own an PSL myself, and would never shoot heavy ball through it.

While you might have shot a few out of it without any indication of damage, I can tell you that you will damage the receiver if you shoot enough heavy ball through it. How much is too much? That's up to each rifle. I could shoot a few heavy hunting loads through my Garand, too, and it might not do any damage. But I guarantee it will catch up to the rifle. Stick with what it was designed to do.

Stick to the <150gr light ball.
