FN SCAR, at what price is it worth it?

I have a line on a FN SCAR for $2100-2200 OTD. This is a good price based on what I see them listed for around here. A gun shop the other day told me $3600:what: for one but he was too lazy to get off his stool and actually look at the tag on the rifle a foot and a half behind him so he may have meant $2600 which is more in the range I've seen them for.

My question (and I figure there are very few who have the experience w/ the SCAR and its alternatives to give a meaningful answer) is whether the SCAR warrants $2100 price tag. $2200 is not that out of line from a high end AR. In the alternate I'm looking at getting a NIB Noveske N4 light 16" basic upper that I found for aprox. $800. Add to that the price of a complete lower, I'm $215 into the one I have, and a rear sight. If one decides to upgrade the stock and/or add a free float tube the price narrows even more.

So at what price, if any is the SCAR a good buy? And more to the point would you get the SCAR or a basic Noveske upper. My intended use is carbine courses, 3 gun type shooting, and general SHTF, zombie apocalypse stuff on the off chance that happens.
 
I don't think I'd spring for a SCAR above $1500. The improvements as far as I can tell aren't so dramatic as to be worth more than double a Colt 6920.

I pretty much agree with this, I could get all the AR I would ever want for $1200 or so, so a SCAR would need to be sub $1500 for me too.

but if I had the money to blow, and I had everything else I wanted. I might spend the money on it, 2100-2200 seems like a good price relative to what other places have them listed for.
 
I'd buy a SCAR if I could find one in the $1600-$1800 range. While I think the SCAR is a very cool gun and as much as I'd love to have one, I don't think I would spend over $2k for one.
 
Depends on how much you have to spend, and how much you want it.

For some people, its cost will be prohibitive, for others it's just a drop in the bucket.

If you can barely afford it, you might be better off getting something cheaper, or keeping what you already have. On the other hand, if you have the cash, go for it. It's a unique platform and really really fun.

(unless youre just buying it to show it off, or have the coolest thing at the range, its hard to justify.... course thats why I bought mine)

If nothing else, you could buy the SCAR at that price, turn around and sell it and make money.

To me, ASSUMING YOU WANT/NEED the additional capabilities the SCAR offers (quick change barrels, better placement of the charging handle, etc), the closer you get to $2,000 the better the deal is. I dunno if it is worth $2,500 to me, but I would go $2,000, no question.

If, OTOH, you're already heavily invested in ARs, and/or you don't plan to use the additional modularity that the SCAR offers, it's really not worth it.

Since they don't (currently, at least) make any extra barrels for it, the QD barrel isn't an exercsizable functional advantage on the SCAR at the moment.

I want one to add to my slowly growing "US mil clone" collection. I'd pay somewhere around 2450 for one when I get really serious about buying one; probably late this summer. (I already bid that number on a couple, but got outbid slightly after that). For me it is the kind of gun that I would put a couple hundred rounds through to confirm function, and then sit it in the safe. I'm not going to be beating on a $2500 piece with little or no parts availability.
 
$1600 would be ok I guess. I don't know about ya'll but I would rather spend $2k customizing a gun then spending it to come stock from the factory.

I thought the SCAR was developed to be a cheaper alternative to the M16.???

Maybe the high price is just because they can't charge the civilian market less then the exorbitant sum they are charging the govt.
 
From what I've read a SCAR's barrel is good for over 30,000 rounds so by that point I'm sure they'd have more barrels available. but then again, that may have been a salesman exagerating. Personally I'd rather have a FN2000, but I'm one of those weird American's that actually likes bullpups.
 
agree with Mike. $2100 would be my limit. willing to wait for $2000.
 
It'd need to be below $1600 for me to bite.

Too many other things I could use 2000+ on.
